The event is now over: Cena defeated Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship, while The Rock chose to step back from the build so the spotlight could stay on Cena and Rhodes. The names below are editorial possibilities, not a reported WWE lineup.
What happened at WrestleMania 41?
WrestleMania 41 took place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on April 19 and 20, 2025. Its advertised Night 2 main event was Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes against John Cena, who had earned the title opportunity by winning at Elimination Chamber on March 1. At that event, The Rock asked Rhodes whether he would give up his soul. Rhodes refused, The Rock signaled Cena, and Cena attacked Rhodes; Travis Scott also appeared in the segment. At WrestleMania, Cena beat Rhodes for the championship, with CBS Sports reporting that Scott helped Cena during the match. Allegiant Stadium’s event listing, F4WOnline’s Elimination Chamber report, and CBS Sports’ WrestleMania report document those details.
Johnson later said stepping back from the story was his choice, explaining that he wanted the focus to remain on the two wrestlers: “Let the Final Boss step back into the shadows and let all the spotlight go to John. Let it go to Cody. Let’s not make it about John’s soul or Cody’s soul. Let’s let them do what they do.” He made the remarks on The Pat McAfee Show, as reported by F4WOnline.
How these five hypothetical allies were chosen
These are creative picks, not claims about WWE’s plans. Each choice is judged by three considerations: a documented history or relationship with Rhodes, credibility as a counter to Cena and The Rock, and the distinct dramatic consequence an appearance could bring. The list does not assume that any alliance, reunion, or run-in was planned.

1. Seth Rollins: a rival with unfinished history
Rollins would give Rhodes a complicated ally rather than an uncomplicated friend. Their rivalry and shared time at the top of WWE make him a plausible person to answer a threat to the championship picture. His involvement would also raise a useful question: is he there to protect Rhodes, or because he refuses to let Cena and The Rock control the story? That tension could create drama without pretending the former rivals had already formed a team.
2. Jey Uso: a trusted connection to the present-day roster
Uso would bring a personal, current-roster counterweight to a story dominated by Cena and The Rock’s star power. His connection to Rhodes makes his support easier to understand as more than a convenient interruption. Dramatically, he could make the conflict feel like a locker-room response to outside influence, while still leaving room for the main event to belong to Rhodes and Cena.

3. Randy Orton: a mentor whose history adds emotional stakes
Orton’s history with Rhodes gives this choice emotional weight. He could step in as someone with a long-standing connection to Cody, but his own stature would make his motives worth questioning. If Orton challenged The Rock’s influence or Cena’s conduct, the moment would draw on their established star power; if he kept his involvement measured, it would support Rhodes without taking over the central rivalry.
4. Kevin Owens: an ally who could complicate the alliance
Owens has been both a close associate and a fierce rival to Rhodes, making him a credible but unpredictable choice. His arrival would not need to signal lasting friendship. Instead, it could force Cena and The Rock to account for an opponent who is difficult to control—and force Rhodes to decide whether he can accept help from someone whose loyalty has never been simple. That uncertainty is the dramatic point.

5. Roman Reigns: the biggest counter-escalation
Reigns would be the most consequential and least subtle option. His standing in WWE makes him credible opposite The Rock, while his history around the top of the company would make his involvement bigger than a routine rescue. A Reigns appearance could turn Rhodes’s personal title fight into a wider power struggle, so it would carry a real trade-off: maximum spectacle, but a risk of pulling attention away from Cena and Rhodes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a five-person rescue would have changed the story
The imagined allies offer five different kinds of support: Rollins brings rivalry, Uso a present-day roster connection, Orton a mentor’s history, Owens uncertainty, and Reigns major escalation. That variety is also the risk. A parade of allies could shift attention from the champion and challenger, the very focus The Rock said he wanted to preserve. His choice to step back helps explain why a story centered on Rhodes and Cena—not a larger factional confrontation—was the direction the build ultimately took.
