Those accounts do not amount to a measured ranking—or verify the names in the original list.
Is there a verified list of the five hardest-drinking journalists?
No. A 2014 bibliography entry identifies Julia Keever’s Richest article, “5 Of The Hardest Drinking Journalists,” but the entry does not reveal the article’s five names or the evidence it used. The citation verifies that an article with that title was listed; it does not verify its claims. Read the bibliography reference.
“Hardest-drinking” is also not a defined or comparable measure in the available accounts. There is no common standard, such as documented consumption over a stated period, that would allow a defensible ranking. The examples below are attributed descriptions, not a recovered version of the original top five.
What accounts can be substantiated?
Joseph Mankiewicz and Dorothy Parker
A New Yorker retrospective characterizes Joseph Mankiewicz and Dorothy Parker as “compulsive drinkers” within the context of William Randolph Hearst’s social circle. That description is tied to that historical milieu; it neither ranks the two against journalists generally nor establishes that either belonged on the original list. David Cemlyn-Jones
Brian Mooney, a former Reuters bureau chief, recalled Cemlyn-Jones’s drinking in Madrid and wrote, “David Cemlyn-Jones was the second hardest drinking journalist I ever knew.” This is a firsthand comparison based on Mooney’s own experience. It tells readers about one colleague’s recollection, not about journalists as a whole. Read Mooney’s account.
Why these examples do not make a fair ranking
The accounts differ in both evidence and scope: the Mankiewicz and Parker description is a retrospective characterization of people in a particular social circle, while Mooney’s statement is a personal recollection about a colleague. Neither supplies a shared measuring method or a complete comparison group. Mankiewicz and Parker are also discussed in a broader literary and social context, so the category “journalist” cannot simply be assumed from these references.

- Category: A person’s presence in a literary or social account does not by itself establish that they fit a list of journalists.

Olivia Laing’s The Trip to Echo Spring: On Writers and Drinking (2014) is adjacent reading on literary culture and alcohol. Its connection to the five people named in the Richest title is not established by the available reference, so it should not be treated as evidence for that list.
