The observances vary by family and region, and none guarantees good fortune. A separate tradition, Watch Night, takes place on New Year’s Eve and carries deep historical and religious meaning, especially in African American communities.
1. Black-eyed peas for good fortune
Eating black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day is a Southern custom associated with good luck, as described by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. The symbolism expresses a hope for the year ahead; it is not a promise that a meal can determine anyone’s fortune.
There is no single established origin story for the custom. The Smithsonian traces the pea’s route from Central Africa through the West Indies to the Carolinas in the early 1700s, and notes that West African beliefs associating the pea with luck continued among enslaved Black people in the American South. Other explanations for the New Year’s tradition circulate as folklore. Vanderbilt University says the historical record does not make clear exactly how Hoppin’ John became associated with New Year’s. It is more accurate to acknowledge multiple accounts than to present one popular story as settled history.
What is Hoppin’ John?
Hoppin’ John is a dish of black-eyed peas and rice. In the Smithsonian’s description, it also includes red peppers and salt pork. Recipes differ from kitchen to kitchen, so the name does not imply that every family uses an identical ingredient list.

2. Greens as a wish for prosperity
Collard greens are commonly paired with the peas. The Smithsonian describes collards as representing the promise of prosperity. The symbolism is a customary wish, not a guarantee—and the greens on a particular table depend on household practice. Some families use other leafy greens, while others may not serve greens at all.
3. Pork in the New Year’s meal
Pork appears in descriptions of the traditional meal in part as a flavoring: the Smithsonian’s Hoppin’ John includes salt pork, and the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce lists pork among the meal’s components. Hog jowl is one regional choice, not a requirement. Whether pork is included, and which cut is used, varies among households.

4. Cornbread alongside the peas and greens
The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce includes cornbread in its account of the Southern New Year’s meal. Some regional tellings connect cornbread’s color with gold, but that symbolism is not universal or established as the meal’s single historical meaning. For many households, it is simply part of the familiar spread.
5. Watch Night on New Year’s Eve
Watch Night is a worship and fellowship observance held on New Year’s Eve, distinct from the New Year’s Day meal. Its history is especially significant in African American communities. The National Museum of African American History and Culture connects the observance to African Americans gathering on December 31, 1862, to await the Emancipation Proclamation’s effective date on January 1, 1863. The museum explains that the tradition remembers slavery and freedom and reflects on faith, community, and strength.

The observance is not simply a countdown to midnight or an extension of food-based good-luck customs. Its religious and historical meaning stands on its own. As the museum describes it, fellowship and worship on New Year’s Eve may be followed by a New Year’s Day meal.

How the traditions fit together
The four foods—black-eyed peas, greens, pork, and cornbread—are described in regional sources as parts of a Southern New Year’s meal, but no one combination defines every Southern table. Families may change the pea preparation, choose different greens, omit pork, or skip one or more dishes. Watch Night is a separate observance, and whether a family attends a service is also a matter of practice and belief. These traditions are best understood as varied customs, not a checklist every Southerner follows.
