Those debates overlapped in public discussion, but they are not the same argument—and none, by itself, explains the movie’s commercial performance.
The live-action musical reimagining, directed by Marc Webb and starring Zegler as Snow White and Gadot as the Evil Queen, opened on March 21, 2025. It is rated PG and runs 109 minutes. Disney framed the story as Snow White escaping her stepmother, meeting seven dwarfs, finding her voice, and gaining strength to confront the Queen; Webb described the film as honoring and expanding the original. Those are the studio’s descriptions, not neutral critical judgments.
| Debate | Central question | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Casting | Who should play Snow White, and how did people respond to Zegler’s casting? | Coverage documented racist backlash as well as political criticism; those should not be treated as interchangeable. |
| Story changes | Does a more active Snow White disrespect or reinterpret the 1937 character? | Zegler criticized the original’s romance and gender roles; the remake still has a love interest, Jonathan. |
| Dwarf representation and work | How should the seven characters be portrayed, and who gets the roles? | Disney said it consulted members of the dwarfism community; critics argued that computer-generated characters excluded dwarf actors from potential work. |
| Political expression | How did the stars’ public positions affect discussion of the film? | Zegler and Gadot expressed contrasting political positions; reporting does not establish personal animosity or production conflict. |
| Publicity and reception | Did controversy affect promotion or explain the film’s box office? | Disney reduced the scale of the Hollywood premiere, but published financial figures do not prove why audiences did or did not attend. |
1. Zegler’s casting and racist backlash
Rachel Zegler, who is of Colombian descent, was cast as Snow White. The casting prompted criticism, but coverage also documented racist attacks directed at the actor. Those attacks are a specific form of backlash, not a label for every disagreement about the adaptation, the character, or the film’s creative choices.
Keeping those categories separate matters: a discussion of whether a remake should change a character is not inherently racist, while racist abuse should not be softened into ordinary casting criticism. The reported backlash does not establish that all critics shared one motive or that every objection to the film was about race.

2. Zegler’s criticism of the original and the remake’s more active heroine
Zegler’s comments about the 1937 animated film became a separate flashpoint. In remarks from a 2022 interview recounted by ABC News Australia on June 25, 2025, she said: “There’s a big focus on her love story with a guy that literally stalks her … weird, weird — so we aren’t going to do that.” She also described the new Snow White as someone who dreams of becoming a leader.
Some critics took those comments as disrespect toward a beloved classic. The underlying creative debate is whether changing Snow White’s agency and the way the romance is presented is a worthwhile reinterpretation or a departure from what audiences value in the original. Disney’s film materials identify Jonathan as a love interest, so the remake does not simply remove romance; the disagreement concerns how the character and relationship are handled.

3. The seven dwarfs, disability representation, and acting opportunities
Actor Peter Dinklage criticized the premise of remaking a story about seven dwarfs while presenting the production as progressive. The controversy has two connected but distinct parts: whether the characters’ portrayal reinforces stereotypes about dwarfism, and whether the production’s choices leave little-person performers with fewer opportunities to play them.
Disney said it had consulted members of the dwarfism community and was taking a different approach to the seven characters. The film used computer-generated characters for the figures. Little-person performers and other critics argued that this choice denied dwarf actors potential roles. That is an employment criticism, not a quantified count of jobs lost: the reporting does not establish how many roles might otherwise have gone to dwarf performers or that all performers share the same view.

4. Zegler and Gadot’s political positions
The political positions of the two leads drew attention amid the Israel-Hamas war. Zegler publicly expressed support for Palestinians. Gadot, an Israeli actor and public supporter of Israel, spoke about the war and hostages. Their contrasting public positions made the cast part of a wider political debate about the conflict.
In March 2025, reporting also described pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel demonstrators at Gadot’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. That public disagreement is not evidence of a private feud: the reporting establishes contrasting political expression and speculation around the actors, not personal animosity or interference with production.

Zegler also faced backlash over social-media remarks about Donald Trump’s 2024 election victory and later apologized. Coverage reported that Disney reduced the scale of the Hollywood premiere amid the controversies. These are documented publicity developments, but they do not show that any one controversy caused audiences to avoid the film.
The available financial figures are dated estimates and reports from different periods, not a single final accounting:
- U.S. opening: The Associated Press estimated $43 million in U.S. ticket sales on March 23, 2025.
- Worldwide gross: ABC News Australia reported $205.6 million worldwide on June 25, 2025.
- Production budget: ABC News Australia cited Forbes for a reported $270 million production budget, before advertising and publicity. This was not presented as a verified final cost.
The U.S. opening estimate and the later worldwide gross cover different periods and markets. Neither figure, nor the reported budget, establishes why the film performed as it did; the available reporting does not isolate the effect of controversy from other influences on audience response.
Why the controversies should be kept separate
The arguments around Snow White involved questions of race and casting, adaptation, disability representation, employment, and political expression. Treating them as one unified backlash obscures who raised each concern and what evidence is available. Disney’s account of the story and its response on dwarf representation are documented positions, but they do not settle the critical questions about the choices or their consequences.
