The John Wick films’ signature style is more than slick gunplay: it grew from a deliberate blend of firearms and martial arts, then expanded into a larger underworld, far-flung settings and characters with personal stakes. Here are five production-backed details that help explain how the franchise became distinctive.
1. “Gun-fu” began with the action, not just the look
The franchise’s close-quarters gunfights combine firearms, martial arts and hand-to-hand combat. Producer Erica Lee says the first film began by putting action at the center; its distinctive designs, aesthetics and “gun-fu” grew from that approach. The result is a style in which the choreography is not merely a layer added to the story’s visual polish—it is part of the films’ identity.
Lionsgate’s Chapter 4 production notes describe the series’ gun-fu as sophisticated close-quarters gunfighting that combines firearms with martial arts and hand-to-hand combat.
2. The High Table is a council of twelve crime lords
The High Table is not simply a vague organization with influence over the underworld. Lionsgate’s production notes describe it as a council of twelve crime lords governing the underworld’s most powerful organizations. That structure gives the series’ criminal world a clear center of authority—and gives Wick’s fight a political dimension as well as a personal one.

In John Wick: Chapter 4, he challenges the Marquis to single combat rather than continuing to run. The film presents the Table’s word as the route to freedom if Wick wins.
3. Chapter 4’s action spans four countries—and Reeves cited at least 14 major sequences
Much of the earlier series is set in New York. Chapter 4 takes Wick beyond it, traveling to Jordan, Japan, Berlin and Paris. Keanu Reeves described the film as having a look and scale unlike the earlier entries, and said it contained “no less than 14 major action sequences,” including a chase through Paris.

- This Wick-tastic 5-film collection features Ballerina, John Wick, John Wick: Chapter 2, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, and John Wick: Chapter 4.
That number is Reeves’s statement in official studio production notes, not an independently audited count. It is a striking measure of the film’s intended scope, while the shift in locations makes the underworld feel larger than a single city.
4. Caine’s loyalty to Wick is tested through his daughter
Caine, played by Donnie Yen, is Wick’s longtime friend. The High Table forces him to oppose Wick by threatening Caine’s daughter, putting him in a conflict that echoes Wick’s own struggle to protect people he cares about.

Yen said he wanted Caine, a blind martial artist, to feel complex and human. Because the character could not look Wick in the eyes, Yen considered how Caine could express himself in other ways. That choice makes his relationship with Wick legible through more than dialogue or direct eye contact.

Director and producer Chad Stahelski said the goal was not for each film to be bigger than the last, but to expand the character and his world: “To be better, as well as bigger.” That distinction helps explain why the franchise’s growth includes new rules, institutions and relationships—not only more elaborate action.
