This ranking follows the estimated worldwide order published by ChartMasters, not an audited sales count; its scope and method differ from the RIAA’s US certifications. It includes the Eagles’ compilation Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 alongside studio albums, so the list is not limited to studio records.
How this ranking works
“Best-selling” can mean paid purchases, certification units, or sales-equivalent units that include streaming. ChartMasters publishes estimates of worldwide album sales; those estimates are the basis for the order below. The available evidence does not establish comparable official worldwide totals for all five albums, so the figures should be treated as estimates rather than definitive audited sales.

The RIAA measures US certifications, not global sales. Its more recent certification counts include streaming equivalents, which makes them a different measure from a worldwide estimate. The list below is therefore a qualified worldwide ranking, not a blend of the two datasets.

Eagles — Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 (1976)
This compilation is a notable entry because it ranks alongside studio albums. ChartMasters’ worldwide ranking is the basis for its placement here; the evidence available does not provide a comparable official worldwide sales total.

There is a separate, well-documented US milestone: the RIAA certified the album at more than 40 million units, as reported by the Associated Press on January 21, 2026. That is a US certification figure, not a worldwide sales count. The AP also reported an announced 180-gram vinyl edition for the album’s anniversary. Don Henley said in a written statement reported by the AP: “In an age, in a culture, where everything seems to become more ephemeral, by the day, it is gratifying to have been part of something that endures, even for fifty years.” Associated Press report, January 21, 2026.

AC/DC — Back in Black (1980)
ChartMasters includes this hard-rock landmark among its leading worldwide estimates. The RIAA’s historical overview mentions the album but does not establish a comparable worldwide total, so its US certification history should not be read as a global sales figure. Pink Floyd — The Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
ChartMasters supplies the secondary worldwide estimate used for this placement. Pink Floyd’s official album page provides the group’s own context and describes the record as “eventually becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time, with very good reason,” but does not give a numeric sales figure. Pink Floyd’s official album page.
-
Led Zeppelin — Led Zeppelin IV (1971)
Its placement here follows ChartMasters’ estimated worldwide ranking. Separately, an RIAA historical overview records a 23-times multi-Platinum certification snapshot for the album. That is a historical US certification reference, not a current worldwide sales total. ChartMasters’ estimated album ranking and the RIAA’s historical certification overview.

Eagles — Hotel California (1976)
ChartMasters’ worldwide estimate controls this ranking’s placement. The AP reported that the RIAA certified Hotel California at 28-times Platinum in January 2026, retaining its position as the third best-selling album in the United States according to that report. The certification is US-only and should not be compared directly with a worldwide estimate. Associated Press report, January 21, 2026.
Why US certifications do not settle the worldwide order
RIAA certifications describe certified US units under its program; they do not establish an album’s worldwide sales. For context, the RIAA’s historical overview records Led Zeppelin IV at 23-times multi-Platinum and the Eagles’ Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 at 29-times multi-Platinum in the snapshot it presents. Those historical figures are not current certifications, and neither is a worldwide total. RIAA historical overview.
Rank #4
The January 2026 AP report documents newer US certification milestones for the Eagles albums: more than 40 million certified units for Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 and 28-times Platinum for Hotel California. These are useful US facts, but they cannot be substituted into a worldwide estimate ranking. Associated Press, January 21, 2026.
