A good result on a general speed test does not guarantee a smooth Netflix stream. The test may use a different server and route, while buffering can also come from unstable Wi‑Fi, a stuck app, device software, DNS resolution, VPN routing, or router state. Work through these five fixes in order, testing on the same device and connection you use for Netflix.
- Does buffering affect one device or every device?
- Does it affect Netflix only, or other streaming apps too?
- Does every title buffer, or just one?
- Is the device on Wi‑Fi or Ethernet?
1. Test the connection Netflix actually uses
Netflix recommends Fast.com because it measures the connection to Netflix. A generic test such as Ookla can still be useful, but it does not prove that the Netflix route is stable.
On a computer, phone, or tablet
- Open a browser on the device that is having trouble.
- Go to https://fast.com and wait for the result.
- Compare the result with Netflix’s current recommendations:
| Video quality | Netflix recommendation |
|---|---|
| HD (720p) | 3 Mbps or higher |
| Full HD (1080p) | 5 Mbps or higher |
| UHD/4K | 15 Mbps or higher |
These figures come from Netflix’s current guidance at help.netflix.com/en/node/306. They are not guarantees: packet loss, congestion, Wi‑Fi interference, and device problems can still interrupt playback above the threshold.
On many TVs and streaming devices
- Open Netflix and press the remote’s Back button.
- Select Get Help, then Check your Network.
- If Get Help is not shown, look under Settings.
Labels vary by manufacturer, app version, and region. Netflix documents this test at help.netflix.com/en/node/100333.

Run the test on the television, console, or streaming stick itself whenever possible. A phone beside the router can report excellent performance while the TV across the room has a weak or unstable link.
2. Fully restart the device and Netflix
Opening Netflix again is not always a full restart. A complete shutdown can clear a temporary network stack, memory, or app state.
- Close Netflix if the device allows it.
- Turn the device completely off, not merely into standby.
- Leave it off for at least 10–15 seconds.
- Turn it on and try the same title again.
On Apple TV, Netflix says to double-tap the Home button, select Netflix, and swipe up to force-close it; restart the Apple TV if playback still fails. Roku, Fire TV, Android TV, Google TV, Samsung, LG, Xbox, and PlayStation menus differ, so use the platform’s own shutdown command rather than assuming one path fits all devices. Netflix’s device guidance is at help.netflix.com/en/node/230 and help.netflix.com/en/node/100242.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
If another device plays the same title normally, the fault is probably local to the original device, its app installation, firmware, Wi‑Fi radio, heat, or available system resources.
3. Power-cycle the modem and router
This resets the local network connection; it is different from switching Wi‑Fi off on the TV.
- Turn off the TV or streaming device.
- Unplug the modem and, if separate, the wireless router.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug the modem back in and wait for its connection lights to settle.
- Plug in the router and wait for it to reconnect.
- Turn on the streaming device.
- Run Fast.com or the built-in Netflix test, then retry playback.
Some gateways take longer than this sequence to reconnect. If your modem and router are one combined unit, unplug only that unit. Do not press the router’s Reset button: that can erase Wi‑Fi names, passwords, and ISP settings. A reboot that helps only temporarily points to a recurring network or equipment problem rather than a permanent cure.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
4. Improve Wi‑Fi or test with Ethernet
Netflix recommends moving the router and device closer together, placing them in the same room where practical, keeping the router away from other wireless equipment and appliances, and positioning it in an open, elevated location rather than on the floor. See Netflix’s Wi‑Fi guidance.
The decisive wired test
- Connect the TV, console, streaming box, or computer directly to the router with Ethernet.
- Play the same title at the same time of day.
- Compare the result with Wi‑Fi playback.
If Ethernet stops the buffering, the likely issue is the wireless path: distance, walls, metal or cabinetry, interference, or a weak device radio. Ethernet does not fix an ISP outage, DNS failure, a broken Netflix app, or defective hardware, but it cleanly separates Wi‑Fi from the rest of the connection.

5. Remove software and network-setting conflicts
Use these lower-risk checks before changing advanced settings:
- Update Netflix through the device’s official app store.
- Install available TV, streaming-device, console, phone, or computer updates.
- Sign out of Netflix and sign back in.
- If supported, uninstall and reinstall Netflix.
- Temporarily disable any VPN or proxy and test again.
- Restore custom router or device DNS settings to Automatic, then retry.
Netflix identifies VPN/proxy and custom DNS settings as connection variables at help.netflix.com/en/node/100242. A VPN changes the route and can reduce throughput or trigger Netflix proxy detection; it is a diagnostic variable, not a buffering remedy.
DNS resolves service addresses. A failing, filtering, or misconfigured resolver can prevent Netflix from being reached, but changing DNS is not a general speed upgrade. On a managed, business, or parental-control network, leave DNS automatic unless the network administrator or ISP advises otherwise. If DNS remains suspect, ask the ISP to check it rather than applying a random public resolver.

When the five fixes do not solve it
Before contacting support, record:
- Whether one device or several are affected.
- Wi‑Fi versus Ethernet connection type.
- Fast.com result and time of day.
- Whether other streaming apps work.
- Whether every title buffers.
- What happened after disabling VPN/proxy or restoring DNS.
- Device model and any Netflix error code.
Contact the ISP and say: “Netflix buffers, but general internet access works.” Give the Fast.com result, explain whether Ethernet changes the behavior, and state how many devices are affected. Ask the ISP to check outages, modem or router faults, connection quality, and DNS. Netflix recommends this one-device-versus-multiple-devices and Wi‑Fi-versus-cable information in its troubleshooting guidance at help.netflix.com/en/node/230. Netflix also advises checking whether other apps connect and whether the issue is limited to one device at help.netflix.com/en/node/62528.
Do not assume you need a faster plan from one discrepancy. If the problem persists over Ethernet, affects several devices, or Fast.com repeatedly falls below the relevant recommendation, the ISP is the appropriate next escalation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can Netflix buffer while YouTube works?
Each service can use different routes, DNS lookups, and app paths. Test the affected device with Fast.com, then check the Netflix app, VPN/proxy, and DNS settings rather than assuming total internet bandwidth is the issue.
Is 100 Mbps enough for Netflix?
It is above Netflix’s published 15 Mbps UHD recommendation for a single 4K stream, but it does not guarantee stable playback. Wi‑Fi interference, household traffic, device faults, and routing problems can still cause buffering.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I change DNS or use a VPN?
Neither is a universal fix. Restore custom DNS to automatic and disable VPNs or proxies as diagnostic steps; DNS or VPN changes can themselves disrupt Netflix.
Does Ethernet always fix Netflix buffering?
No. Ethernet only tests whether the local Wi‑Fi path is responsible. Buffering that continues over Ethernet points toward the device, app, DNS, router, ISP, or Netflix route.
