Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallStart with Sylvester’s disco falsetto, then move through Lil Nas X’s pop-country collision, Le1f’s rap, Kele Okereke’s indie rock and Cakes da Killa’s club-ready hip-hop. These five artists are well-supported starting points for a listening guide to Black gay singers; the available evidence does not substantiate a responsible list of ten under that exact description.
Five artists to add to your listening list
This is a discovery guide, not a ranking: each artist brings a different sound and a different route into the music. Identity labels below follow the cited reporting; Black LGBTQ+ is a broader category than Black gay men, so the two should not be treated as interchangeable.
Sylvester — disco and an unmistakable falsetto
Sylvester is the historical anchor here: an openly gay Black singer whose disco records paired a soaring falsetto with commanding performance. The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus also notes his AIDS activism and influence. Play “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” for the immediate entry point. Spotify’s feature on his legacy includes musician and journalist Jason King’s observation that Sylvester operated “at the nexus of being Black and being gay and being femme” when those identities were stigmatized. Spotify Newsroom, June 22, 2022; San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus.
Lil Nas X — country-rap into pop
Lil Nas X made a genre-blending breakthrough with “Old Town Road,” which fused country and rap into a pop phenomenon. For a more direct expression of queer visibility and resistance to prejudice, try “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name).” These tracks show two different sides of his approach to genre and public identity. San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus; Pride.

Le1f — experimental rap
Le1f is an openly gay rapper, producer and dancer, bringing a deliberately rough-edged, experimental sensibility to hip-hop. Start with “Wut” or “Soda” to hear the range of his sound. Grimy Goods.
Kele Okereke — indie rock
Kele Okereke, the openly gay frontman of Bloc Party, offers an indie-rock counterpoint to the solo rap and disco artists here. Bloc Party’s place in the indie scene makes Okereke a useful starting point for listeners exploring queer Black artists beyond dance and hip-hop. Grimy Goods.

Cakes da Killa — club-minded hip-hop
Cakes da Killa is a gay rapper whose work and public presence challenge the idea that queer rap belongs in a single category. PinkNews covered his appearance on Rhythm + Flow and his response to being framed as “the first gay rapper.” That phrase is best understood as a label raised in the show, not an objective distinction. PinkNews.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this list has five names, not ten
The title’s specific phrase “Black gay singers” calls for care: several widely discussed Black LGBTQ+ musicians may not identify as gay men, and a singer’s identity should not be inferred from a broad LGBTQ+ roundup. The evidence supporting this exact category establishes these five useful starting points, but does not establish five additional names with the same level of confidence. This guide therefore keeps the category precise rather than padding it with speculation or treating rumor as fact.

One important example is Luther Vandross: Out reports that he never publicly came out, so he should not be presented as a confirmed gay singer. Respecting that distinction does not diminish his music; it avoids claiming a personal identity he did not publicly establish.
