Vince McMahon’s strongest rivalries made him more than an authority figure: they turned the owner into a character with personal, family, or corporate stakes. His weakest entries, by the same standard, rely more on a one-off spectacle than on a sustained conflict. This is an editorial ranking, not an official WWE list or a measured fan consensus.

“Rivalries” here means primarily on-screen WWE storylines. The Montreal incident involving Bret Hart was a real backstage controversy that shaped McMahon’s public persona; it is distinct from the later scripted Hart–McMahon feud. The rankings weigh clarity of conflict, stakes, McMahon’s role, payoff, and whether the story unfolded across multiple chapters.

The five best Vince McMahon rivalries

1. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin: the defining power struggle

The Austin–McMahon feud made the boss himself the obstacle. WWE traces the on-screen clashes to 1998, following the 1997 Montreal incident that had already shown viewers McMahon’s authority in a charged real-world setting. The story’s basic conflict was legible and durable: an unruly champion resisting an owner determined to control him.

Austin later summed up their partnership in a WWE interview: “We did so much, and we did it so well.” He also said McMahon was one of the few people he felt matched his beliefs and intensity. Those are Austin’s personal assessments, not objective measurements, but they capture why this rivalry works so well as dramatic television. WWE’s Austin profile and retrospective frame the conflict as a defining part of both characters.

2. Bret Hart: the real rupture and the later story

Hart’s conflict with McMahon is compelling because it contains two different kinds of history. At Survivor Series 1997, Hart was scheduled to leave for WCW while he and McMahon disputed what would happen to the title. WWE’s account describes the incident as the moment McMahon’s authority became visible to viewers. That backstage controversy should not be mistaken for a conventional scripted feud.

When Hart returned in 2010, WWE says their unresolved personal rivalry was reignited on screen and culminated at WrestleMania XXVI. The later storyline could draw on the audience’s awareness of the earlier rupture, giving its resolution a particular weight. WWE’s Hart profile provides the basis for separating the real incident from the later programmed rivalry; its WrestleMania XXVI retrospective covers the culmination.

Now, for the first time on DVD, fans can see the whole story. From the Rockers to D-Generation X with Triple H, the Clique to the "Montreal Screwjob," every ounce of Michael s heartbreak and triumph is here! Format: DVD MOVIE

3. Shane McMahon: a family fight with corporate stakes

Vince versus Shane gave the conflict an unmistakably personal dimension while keeping the company’s future at stake. WWE says Shane faced his father at WrestleMania X-Seven after announcing he had acquired WCW. Later, Shane and Stephanie formed The Alliance after Shane acquired ECW. The family relationship made the power struggle easy to understand, while the rival-company premise gave it a larger frame. WWE’s Shane McMahon profile documents those storylines.

4. Shawn Michaels: a focused WrestleMania confrontation

The McMahon–Michaels conflict has a clear endpoint: WWE describes it as leading to a No Holds Barred match at WrestleMania 22. That direct framing makes it a stronger rivalry candidate than a match with no substantial personal setup. It ranks below the longer Austin and Hart arcs here because the available WWE material offers less detail about its development. Michaels also has a separate, long-running rivalry with Hart; that is not the same as his conflict with McMahon. WWE’s WrestleMania 22 feature covers the McMahon–Michaels match, while the Hart profile discusses Hart and Michaels.

The Monday Night War: WWE Raw vs. WCW Nitro
  • In 1995, two wrestling companies squared off on Monday night television to compete head to head in an unprecedented confrontation. On one side, Vince McMahon, the promoter who created WWE and made the industry what it is today. On the other, WCW, owned by media giant Ted Turner, and run by an ambitious man named Eric Bischoff. This is the whole story, told by those who created it, lived it, and

5. Hulk Hogan: a huge match, a shorter rivalry

McMahon tried to end Hulkamania in a Street Fight against Hogan at WrestleMania XIX. The premise pitted the company’s owner against one of wrestling’s most recognizable stars, creating an immediate spectacle. It earns a place among the best for the scale and clarity of that confrontation, but the evidence here centers on one marquee match rather than a multi-chapter feud. That limitation keeps it below the sustained stories above. WWE recounts the match in its WrestleMania XIX retrospective.

Five Vince McMahon feuds that fell short by these criteria

WWE does not publish an objective ranking of McMahon’s worst rivalries, and the available sources do not establish comparable audience or business results. These five are therefore editorial picks: entries that are less complete as sustained, direct McMahon conflicts than the strongest examples above. They are not a claim of critical or fan consensus.

1. Donald Trump: a memorable stunt more than a personal feud

WWE’s March 13, 2007 announcement set up a WrestleMania 23 hair-versus-hair contest: Trump’s wrestler Bobby Lashley would face McMahon’s wrestler Umaga, with Steve Austin as special guest referee. McMahon’s resulting baldness became, in WWE’s retrospective language, his “most unflattering moment.” The payoff is unmistakable, but the match centered on representatives rather than a sustained contest between Trump and McMahon themselves. Under criteria that prize an evolving personal rivalry, the angle is more spectacle than story. WWE’s announcement and retrospective establish the format and payoff.

2. Hulk Hogan: one major bout cannot carry many chapters

The WrestleMania XIX Street Fight has star power and an easy-to-follow premise, but a single match is thin material for a rivalry ranking built around sustained conflict. This is not a judgment that the match itself failed; it is a judgment about the limited arc documented here. Hogan’s appearance works as a spectacle, but offers less story development than Austin, Hart, or Shane.

3. Shawn Michaels: a strong match premise with a less-developed arc

The No Holds Barred match at WrestleMania 22 gives the feud a clear climax, but the available WWE feature establishes less of its buildup than it does for the leading rivalries. That makes the conflict harder to rank as a complete story rather than as a notable match. Its placement reflects the limits of the documented arc, not evidence that it was poorly received.

4. Bret Hart: the real controversy complicates the scripted feud

Hart’s 2010 on-screen resolution has emotional and historical stakes, but it also depends on a real backstage controversy that cannot be treated as ordinary storyline material. That distinction makes the rivalry unusually powerful and unusually difficult to evaluate as pure fiction. It falls on this side of the list only if the criterion is a clean, self-contained scripted arc; the controversy itself is not being labeled a bad feud.

5. Donald Trump: the premise delegates the main contest

The Trump angle is also a weak fit if the category requires McMahon to be the direct opponent across a sustained series of encounters. Lashley and Umaga wrestled the match, while Austin served as referee; Trump and McMahon supplied the hair-versus-hair stakes. This is the same event as the first entry, viewed through a different shortcoming: its central contest was delegated. The ranking is an editorial inference from the documented format, not a claim about audience reaction.

How to read the rankings

  • Best: Austin, Hart, and Shane have the clearest combinations of continuing conflict, personal or corporate stakes, and McMahon as a direct character in the story.
  • Shorter arcs: Hogan’s WrestleMania XIX match and Michaels’ WrestleMania 22 confrontation have clear marquee payoffs, but the WWE material cited here documents less sustained development.
  • Worst is a format judgment: Trump’s hair-versus-hair angle is the clearest example of spectacle and delegated wrestlers taking priority over a prolonged direct rivalry.

WWE’s own WrestleMania rivalry list includes other marquee pairings such as Hogan–Savage, Undertaker–Michaels, and Rock–Austin. They are useful context for what WWE presents as major rivalry storytelling, but they are not automatically Vince McMahon feuds.
