For U.S. viewers looking back at January 2024, these five picks span a historical crime epic, a compact romance, franchise action, a survival drama and a character-driven classic. “New to streaming” means newly available on a service that month, not necessarily a new film release. This is a curated shortlist, not an objective ranking; the dates and services below are historical, and catalogs vary by country and change over time.

How to choose among them
For a serious historical crime story: Killers of the Flower Moon
Martin Scorsese’s film draws on David Grann’s nonfiction account of the murders of Osage people in 1920s Oklahoma. Its scale makes it the most demanding pick here: the Associated Press gives its running time as about three and a half hours. TheWrap also identifies Grann’s book, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, as the film’s source material for readers who want to explore the history beyond the screen. AP reported the film began streaming on Apple TV+ on January 12, 2024. Associated Press coverage; TheWrap’s January guide.

For a short, offbeat romance: Fallen Leaves
Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki’s 81-minute romantic comedy follows two lonely people trying to find connection. Its dry, restrained tone is a marked change from larger studio spectacles. AP reported its MUBI streaming debut in the January 12 roundup, and film writer Jake Coyle named it his No. 1 film of 2023—an individual critic’s ranking, not a consensus score. Associated Press weekend roundup.
For high-energy franchise action: Fast X
The tenth main installment in the Fast & Furious series is the pick for a deliberately oversized action spectacle rather than a quiet or intimate story. AP reported that it was headed to Prime Video on January 16, 2024. Associated Press weekend roundup.

For a survival story: Society of the Snow
J. A. Bayona’s film tells the story of survivors of the 1972 plane crash in the Andes. TheWrap highlighted its visceral crash opening and its adaptation of the survivors’ experience. It makes the list for viewers drawn to intense survival dramas; TheWrap’s January guide includes it among its streaming recommendations. TheWrap’s January guide.
For a character-driven classic: Good Will Hunting
Rather than a new production, this is a chance to revisit a familiar drama about a gifted young man and the people who challenge him. TheWrap singled out the performances by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Robin Williams and listed the film on Prime Video from January 1, 2024. TheWrap’s January guide.

What “new to streaming” meant in January 2024
Streaming calendars mix recent releases with older films newly added to a service. That is why Good Will Hunting belongs beside 2023 titles here: the date refers to its reported service addition, not its premiere. TheWrap’s month-wide guide covered Netflix, Prime Video, Max, Hulu, Paramount+, Peacock and other services. The Associated Press roundups reported specific debuts for Fallen Leaves, Fast X and Killers of the Flower Moon. Rotten Tomatoes’ January calendar is another retrospective cross-check, but its page was updated July 26, 2024, so it is not evidence of present-day availability. Rotten Tomatoes’ January calendar.
