Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, published September 30, 2026, ranks 40 essential vampire movies by Tomatometer. Its scope is broader than a countdown of the highest-scoring films: the guide also makes room for titles it calls “Rotten but still essential.” The first five entries shown in the available guide extract range from 96% to 98%.

How to choose a vampire movie for your mood
The guide’s range is useful if you want to choose by more than rank. Its examples span early gothic and silent-era films, romance and social drama, comedy, and action. These are viewing routes through the list, not an exhaustive classification of its 40 films.
For gothic atmosphere and early cinema
Start with Dracula, Nosferatu, or Vampyr if you are drawn to older gothic horror and silent-era cinema. Nosferatu is also among the five highest-ranked entries shown in the extract, at #4.
#1 Best Overall
For romance and social settings
The Hunger and Interview with the Vampire are examples in the guide’s romance-and-social-settings lane, offering a different entry point from a straightforward monster story.
For comedy
What We Do in the Shadows is the guide’s comedy example. It is ranked #5 in the visible top five, with a 96% Tomatometer score.
For action
For a more action-oriented pick, the guide names From Dusk ’Til Dawn, Daybreakers, Underworld, and 30 Days of Night.
What the ranking tells you—and what it does not
The Tomatometer order gives readers one way to compare the films, but a high position is not the only reason a title belongs in an “essential” guide. Rotten Tomatoes explicitly includes films it describes as “Rotten but still essential,” so its editorial selection is not simply a list of the highest scores.
