Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can read Kindle-compatible books without buying each title—and without owning a Kindle e-reader. Start with Amazon’s titles currently priced at zero, borrow eligible books through a U.S. library using Libby, download older works from Project Gutenberg, or use Prime Reading if you already pay for Prime. The first three routes can provide access without a Prime membership; Prime Reading is included with one.
Compare the four ways to get Kindle books at no extra cost
| Route | What you need | What determines availability | How you read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Kindle Store free titles | No library card or Prime membership is required for a title priced at zero. | The price and promotions shown on each title’s page; they can change. | Kindle app, Kindle e-reader, or supported browser access. |
| Libby library loans | A participating library card and, for Kindle e-reader delivery, U.S. access. | Your library’s collection and whether the title is available to borrow. | For eligible U.S. loans, send the book to a Kindle e-reader through Amazon; Libby also supports reading in its app. |
| Project Gutenberg | No library card or paid membership. | Its catalog of older works focused on titles whose U.S. copyright has expired. | Read in a browser or app, or download a compatible file for a Kindle. |
| Prime Reading | An existing Amazon Prime membership. | The changing Prime Reading catalog. | Read eligible titles with a Kindle device or app. |
“Free” means different things across these options: an Amazon zero-price title or a Project Gutenberg download does not require a paid membership, while Libby is a time-limited library loan and Prime Reading is included with a paid membership. A Kindle e-reader is optional; the free Kindle app and browser reading are alternatives where supported.
1. Find titles currently priced at zero in the Kindle Store
Amazon maintains separate Free and Paid Kindle bestseller lists. Browse the free list, then open a title’s page and check its displayed price before you get it. Listings and promotions can change, so a book that was free earlier—or appears in a search result—may not still be priced at zero.
This route is not a library loan: you do not need a library card. It is the simplest option when you want to browse Amazon and read a title using the Kindle app, a Kindle e-reader, or supported browser access.

2. Borrow Kindle books from a library with Libby
Libby says most, but not necessarily all, of its books can be read on a Kindle e-reader in the United States. You need a library card for a library that offers the title. Borrowing does not guarantee immediate access: availability depends on the library’s collection and the title’s lending status.
- In Libby, open Shelf, then select Loans.
- Choose the loan and tap Read With, then select Kindle.
- On Amazon, finish by selecting Get Library Book.
Libby’s documented Kindle e-reader workflow is U.S.-only. If you are elsewhere, check your library’s instructions rather than assuming the Kindle delivery option is available. You can also read eligible loans in the Libby app.

3. Download older books from Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg offers free online reading and downloads, focusing on older works whose U.S. copyright has expired. Its catalog showed 79,547 free eBooks on October 7, 2026; this is a live count and may change. Copyright rules differ by country, so a work’s availability there does not establish that it is public domain everywhere.
Choose a reading method
- Browser: Select the site’s “Read now!” option to read online; no e-reader is required.
- Newer Kindle: Project Gutenberg recommends downloading an EPUB3 file and sending it to the device through Amazon Send-to-Kindle.
- Kindles made before 2013: Project Gutenberg’s guide recommends transferring a Kindle/MOBI file by USB.
- Reading app: Download a format supported by your reading app and open it there.
Project Gutenberg downloads are independent of Amazon’s Kindle Store and are not library loans. Check the available formats and the guidance for your device before transferring a file.

4. Use Prime Reading if you already have Prime
Amazon describes Prime Reading as a catalog of content included for Prime members. It can be convenient if you already have Prime, but it is not a free service for readers without that paid membership. The catalog can change, so check whether a title is currently included before relying on it.
Kindle Unlimited is separate from Prime Reading and is a paid subscription, not a lasting free-books route. Amazon says eligible customers may receive a free trial, but a valid payment method is required and the trial automatically becomes a monthly paid plan when it ends unless canceled. Its catalog can also change.

Do you need to buy a Kindle?
No. The Kindle app is free, and browser reading is available for supported titles and services. Project Gutenberg also offers browser reading. A Kindle e-reader is an optional dedicated device, not a prerequisite for finding or reading these books.
