There is no verified, authoritative ranking of 30 films that inaccurately portray mental-health conditions. The available evidence documents recurring screen stereotypes and critiques of selected movies, but it does not validate 30 specific film-and-diagnosis pairings. Rather than present a definitive list that the evidence cannot support, this guide explains how to assess portrayals responsibly, what research has found, and where named critiques fit.
What research says about mental illness in movies
Studies have found recurring portrayals that link serious mental illness with dangerousness or violence. That is a pattern in screen representation, not a description of people who have diagnoses. A 2012 content analysis in Psychiatric Services examined portrayals of schizophrenia in contemporary movies; a separate 1991 Psychiatric Services article analyzed stigmatizing depictions of mentally ill people in films. These works support scrutiny of recurring stereotypes, not a claim that every movie or character fits one pattern.
USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’s 2023 update examined 300 popular films released between 2016 and 2022. It reported that nearly 40% of the analyzed characters with mental-health conditions died in the story, many violently. That finding applies to the report’s sample and its identified characters; it is not a statistic about all films or people with mental-health conditions. The report also notes that a movie-focused study does not capture all television or streaming portrayals. Read the 2023 report.
Why a definitive list of 30 is not supported
The sources available do not establish a canonical list of 30 movies, nor do they verify each film’s portrayal against a clinical standard. A reference list of films about mental disorders can help identify titles, but inclusion on such a list is not evidence that a film is inaccurate. Likewise, a critic’s judgment about one movie is not equivalent to a systematic content analysis.

Psychology Today’s 2024 commentary, “3 Movies That Totally Misrepresent Psychological Disorders,” offers selected critiques. Those assessments can be discussed as commentary, but they should not be presented as scholarly findings or as settled clinical verdicts. Read the commentary.
How to judge a movie’s portrayal
Instead of treating “inaccurate” as a label that can be applied from a plot summary alone, consider the specific choices a film makes. These are useful comparison questions, not a formal rating scale.
Rank #2
- Symptoms and complexity: Does the story show a condition as varied and contextual, or reduce it to one dramatic symptom? Is the character more than a collection of symptoms?
- Violence and villainy: Does the film use a diagnosis as shorthand for danger or evil? A character’s diagnosis should not be treated as evidence that people with that condition are generally violent.
- Treatment and clinicians: Are therapy, medication, hospitals, or mental-health professionals depicted as part of a credible care context, or only as plot devices? A film can misrepresent treatment even when its central character is humanized.
- Humanity beyond diagnosis: Does the character have relationships, goals, agency, and a life beyond the condition, or exist mainly to shock, frighten, or move another character’s story?
Dramatization by itself does not prove that a movie is wholly inaccurate. A stronger critique identifies the particular symptom, stereotype, or treatment depiction at issue and attributes the assessment to a named source.
Portrayals of treatment matter too
Representation is not limited to how a movie depicts symptoms. A 2026 scoping review of 35 Bollywood films found frequent depictions of mental-health professionals as incompetent, alongside ethical violations and ineffective treatment. Those findings concern the review’s selected films and Bollywood context; they should not be generalized to every film industry or to all portrayals of care. Read the scoping review.

Where to find guidance for more authentic portrayals
USC Annenberg points readers and filmmakers to the Mental Health Media Guide, developed with MTV Entertainment Group and expert practitioners. It is intended as a resource for creating more authentic portrayals, rather than as a list of movies to avoid.
Movies can prompt discussion, but they are not clinical guides. A careful assessment distinguishes a research finding from an expert or critic’s interpretation, names the limits of the evidence, and avoids diagnosing a character from sparse plot details.
