“Gender-bending movies” covers several distinct kinds of film: disguise comedies, drag and performance, stories centered on transgender characters, documentaries, and speculative transformations. They can all question gender expectations, but they are not interchangeable. A comic disguise plot is not automatically a trans story, and a film’s perspective, casting, and framing matter as much as its subject.
Here are 30 thoughtful starting points, grouped by how they approach gender rather than ranked as if they tell the same story. The list mixes fiction and documentary, and includes films that challenge, complicate, or sometimes reinforce familiar expectations.
How to read this list
“Gender-bending” is an umbrella term, not a single genre or identity. Some films use temporary disguise as a comic device; some center trans or gender-nonconforming people; others document drag culture or imagine physical transformation. Those differences shape what each film can say—and whose experience the viewer is asked to follow.
Film history also includes damaging portrayals that linked gender variance with criminality or pathology. The British Film Institute’s historical overview traces that legacy and contrasts it with later films that center trans characters’ perspectives. Read the BFI’s historical overview.

26. Girls Lost

Pedro Almodóvar’s thriller involves forced bodily transformation and raises questions about identity and control. Its extreme premise is not a model for trans representation; the film is best approached as a disturbing work of speculative fiction.
30. The Danish Girl
The Danish Girl is already included above as a historical trans-centered drama, so it is not a separate recommendation. To keep the list at 30 distinct films, consider Hedwig and the Angry Inch instead: John Cameron Mitchell’s rock musical follows a genderqueer punk performer and makes identity, performance, and self-invention central to its style.
What these films reveal about gender on screen
Gender-reversal comedy can create ambiguity and expose social rules, but it can also return to conventional gender roles by the ending. A peer-reviewed analysis of Tootsie, Mrs. Doubtfire, and White Chicks makes that case as a critical reading of those comedies—not as a universal verdict on every film. Read the academic analysis.
For a more useful watchlist than a single ranking, ask what each film is doing: Is gender a disguise, a performance, a lived identity, a documentary subject, or a speculative transformation? Whose point of view shapes the story? Does the film challenge familiar expectations, complicate them, or ultimately restore them? Those questions help distinguish a comic premise from a story about representation and lived experience.
