If you liked Never Have I Ever for its mix of high-school crushes, messy friendships, family tension, and growing up through grief, there is no single perfect substitute. Netflix describes the series as a coming-of-age comedy about a modern first-generation Indian American teenager; these picks are grouped by what they share, from lighter teen romance to more emotionally demanding stories.
Quick picks by what you want next
| What you want | Start with | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Romance-forward high school | XO, Kitty | Teen relationships and romantic complications are central. |
| Coming-of-age with a heavier emotional thread | Atypical | It is a platform-recommended and viewer-suggested coming-of-age option, though its perspective and tone differ. |
| Friendship and identity in adolescence | Heartstopper | A gentler teen relationship story with a strong focus on connection and self-discovery. |
| Family conflict and teen life | Ginny & Georgia | It brings family dynamics to the foreground and leans more heavily into drama. |
| Growing up beyond high school | Chewing Gum | A looser match about identity and sexuality, centered on an adult protagonist. |
These are editorial matches, not a definitive ranking. Netflix’s “You Might Also Like” row is a platform suggestion, not proof that two shows are interchangeable, and one reader discussion is anecdotal rather than a survey.

Why these shows feel like Never Have I Ever
Never Have I Ever works on several levels at once: it is a high-school comedy, a romance about crushes and complicated choices, and a coming-of-age story shaped by family, ambition, identity, and loss. Netflix’s retrospective describes Devi as an overachiever aiming for Princeton while grieving her father and navigating school and friendships. A recommendation may share one part of that mix without matching the whole.
Use the lists below according to the element you want most. Some are light, romantic picks; others are more dramatic, or are included because they explore adolescence and identity from a different perspective.

For light, romance-forward teen stories
1. XO, Kitty
Start here if you want teen romance, a high-school setting, and feelings that refuse to stay simple. XO, Kitty is connected to the To All the Boys franchise, and Seventeen specifically recommends it to fans of Never Have I Ever for its romantic complications. It is the clearest romance-first follow-up on this list.
2. The Summer I Turned Pretty
This reader-suggested match trades the school corridors for a summer setting and puts romantic growing pains at the center. Choose it for the crushes and emotional coming-of-age angle, not for the same school-life comedy or family perspective.

- Factory sealed DVD
3. Anonymously Yours
Netflix lists this film among the titles suggested on its Never Have I Ever page. It is a reasonable option if you are looking for a lighter romantic connection, but a platform recommendation should not be read as a claim that its characters or cultural perspective mirror Devi’s.
4. Tall Girl 2
Also included in Netflix’s suggestions, Tall Girl 2 offers a teen-focused route into relationships and self-image. Try it if you want a lighter youth-oriented pick rather than the grief and family threads that give Never Have I Ever much of its emotional weight.
Rank #3
- Factory sealed DVD
5. Work It
Netflix includes Work It in its “You Might Also Like” suggestions. It is another light, teen-centered choice for viewers looking for a change of pace, rather than a close match for the series’ particular blend of cultural identity, bereavement, and school drama.
For friendship, identity, and finding your place
6. Heartstopper
Heartstopper is a reader-suggested pick for viewers who want the tenderness of young people figuring out who they are and how to be close to one another. Its emotional register is gentler, and its central relationship differs from Devi’s romantic storylines.

7. Atypical
Atypical appears both in Netflix’s recommendations for Never Have I Ever and in the reader discussion that prompted several suggestions. It shares a coming-of-age interest in family, relationships, and growing independence, while following a different protagonist and perspective.
8. Freeridge
Netflix also suggests Freeridge. Consider it if you want another youth-centered story involving friendships and the complications that come with growing up. Its appearance in a recommendation row is useful discovery evidence, not an objective similarity score.

9. Chewing Gum
Seventeen draws a coming-of-age and sexuality parallel between Chewing Gum and Never Have I Ever. The match is looser because Chewing Gum follows an adult rather than a high-school student; it suits viewers open to a different life stage and a distinct comic voice.

10. Ginny & Georgia
A reader-suggested option for viewers interested in teen life alongside family complications. It leans more heavily into drama than Never Have I Ever, so choose it for the parent-child and growing-up tensions rather than expecting the same light comic rhythm.
11. Sex Education
This reader-suggested series shares the awkwardness, relationships, and identity questions of adolescence, but it covers sexual subjects more directly and has its own ensemble focus. It is a better fit if you want a broader, more candid teen dramedy than if you are seeking a close tonal copy.
Where to stream these picks
Streaming availability depends on country and changes over time. Netflix’s official U.S. Young Adult catalog is a dated snapshot rather than a guarantee of what is available now, or in another market. Check the title in your local service’s catalog before choosing what to watch; similarity does not mean the show or film is on the same platform.
