The official 28 Years Later trailer sets up a horror story about a father and son leaving a guarded island community to face danger on the mainland. The film returns to the world of 28 Days Later, but its infected are living people changed by a virus—not undead zombies.
What is 28 Years Later about?
Sony describes 28 Years Later as a 2025 horror story in the world created by 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. Its premise jumps to a society living with the consequences of the rage-virus outbreak almost three decades after the virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory. Sony’s official film page

Some survivors have made a home on a small island. A single causeway connects it to the mainland, and the community heavily defends that route. Sony’s synopsis says one survivor leaves the island on a mission and encounters new horrors among both infected people and other survivors. The trailer’s family journey gives that larger premise a personal focus: venturing beyond the protected settlement means entering a landscape where neither the infected nor other people can be assumed safe.
What does the official trailer show?
Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan’s December 10, 2024 announcement describes the trailer’s sequence: children watching television, a woman announcing an emergency, and a title card reading “almost 28 years earlier.” It then describes an isolated community with posted rules and watchtowers, followed by ominous scenes involving an armed man and a boy, a pursued pair seeking shelter, soldiers, strange figures, skulls, and attacks. - Decades after the rage virus outbreak, survivors live in isolation. When one leaves his ruthlessly quarantined island sanctuary, he uncovers haunting secrets and mutations in both the infected and the remaining humans. From director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland comes a bold return to the world of 28 Days Later.
Sony’s announcement cautiously calls the armed man and boy people who “appear to be parent and child.” A later interview with Boyle identifies them as Jamie, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and his 12-year-old son Spike, played by Alfie Williams. Boyle says Jamie takes Spike to the mainland despite Isla’s fears. That interview supplies character details beyond what Sony’s original trailer announcement identified. Are the infected in 28 Years Later zombies?
No—not in the conventional sense of reanimated, undead corpses. Sony and Boyle describe them as living humans changed by the virus. They can die, but the danger is that they may catch and kill an uninfected person. Boyle put the distinction plainly in TIME: “No, they’re not zombies. They’re infected.”

- Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.
The trailer’s ominous, zombie-apocalypse imagery can make the familiar shorthand tempting, but the distinction matters to the story’s rules: the threat comes from people altered by infection, not supernatural resurrection. In the later interview, Boyle says the virus mutates and describes infected people who have become stronger and hunt in packs under leaders called Alphas. Those are details clarified in the interview about the film, rather than explanations contained in Sony’s original trailer announcement.
How does it connect to 28 Days Later?
Sony positions the movie in the world created by 28 Days Later, with the rage virus and its consequences carrying forward into a later generation. The shift is not simply a new outbreak: the official premise is a survivor society that has endured for decades, with boundaries, rules, and defenses built around an island community. The trailer then points outward, toward a mainland mission that tests the limits of that protection.

That setup changes the point of view from immediate outbreak survival to life after years of quarantine and the risks of crossing back into a dangerous world. The focus on a father and son gives the journey an intimate stake, while the infected and other survivors make the mainland threatening in different ways.

Sony’s page gives a specific equipment note for 4K Ultra HD playback with HDR: it requires a 4K UHD TV with HDR, an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, and high-speed HDMI 2.0A cables. This requirement applies to that 4K HDR setup, not to standard Blu-ray viewing.
