What is 28 Years Later about?
Nearly three decades after the Rage Virus devastated England, survivors have made a life on a remote island. A boy named Spike leaves its relative safety with his father, Jamie, on a dangerous mission to the mainland. The journey brings them into contact with a changed world—and with the ways both infected people and human survivors have adapted to it.
The island is linked to the mainland by a single heavily defended causeway, a concrete detail that gives the story a sense of isolation before the journey even begins. Netflix Tudum identifies the setting as Holy Island, off England. The film was shot in several English locations, including Lindisfarne, North Yorkshire, Somerset, County Durham and Tyne and Wear. Sony’s official film page offers the spoiler-light premise.

#1 Best Overall
- Decades after the rage virus outbreak, survivors live in isolation. When one leaves his ruthlessly quarantined island sanctuary, he uncovers haunting secrets and mutations in both the infected and the remaining humans. From director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland comes a bold return to the world of 28 Days Later.
Why it became one of my favorite movies of 2025
A survival story with a child’s point of view
Spike’s journey gives the film more than an outbreak to survive. It is also a coming-of-age story about a boy encountering danger, grief and the complicated choices adults make in the name of protection. That focus makes the stakes feel personal even when the landscape is frighteningly large.
Horror, dark humor and tenderness share the same space
The film can be graphic and disturbing, but it is not only grim. Its jolts of humor and moments of tenderness sharpen the contrast rather than cancel the horror. That mixture is part of what made it compelling to me: the story keeps shifting between visceral fear and questions about family, mortality and how people find meaning in a brutal world.
Rank #2
- Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.
A contained British setting
Director Danny Boyle has said the filmmakers wanted the story to stay rooted in the UK rather than turn into an international contagion narrative. In an interview with TIME, Boyle described the intention as making British characters solve their problems without an outside force arriving to save them. The island and its defended causeway make that constraint tangible.
The movie calls its attackers “the infected,” not zombies. Boyle told TIME that they are living people who can die, rather than undead creatures. That distinction fits the series’ more physical, urgent horror: the threat is not a supernatural force but a disease that has remade people and the society around them.

A striking, unpredictable style
Boyle’s visual approach, abrupt tonal changes and willingness to surprise help the film feel distinct from a routine sequel. The style will not suit everyone, and neither will the graphic violence. But when the film’s boldness works, it makes the danger feel immediate and the quieter emotional scenes linger.
What critics say—and who may not enjoy it
The response has not been unanimous. In the Associated Press, Jake Coyle gave the film two stars out of four, while recognizing tenderness in its reflections on mortality and misguided exceptionalism and describing it as an unusually soulful coming-of-age film. Martin Shore’s favorable Tom’s Guide recommendation, published September 22, 2025, praised its mix of humor, darkness, storytelling, performances, visual style and surprises. Shore also reported an 89% Rotten Tomatoes critics score from 383 accredited reviews at that time; that is a dated snapshot, not a live score.

The tonal swings and graphic horror are central to the experience, not incidental details. If you prefer restrained scares or a consistent mood, this may not be your film. If you enjoy ambitious horror that makes room for family drama and uncomfortable reflection, its rough edges may be part of the appeal.
