The film moves between an older Sanjay’s journey from Bombay toward Varanasi and memories of his younger self, caught between artistic ambitions, family responsibility and a domineering father. That structure makes the train more than a backdrop: it is where work, travel and memory meet.
What is 27 Down about?
Sanjay works for the railways after giving up the artistic life he had wanted. The National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) describes the conflict as one of crushed hopes and aspirations under his father’s dogmatic influence. When Sanjay later gets a chance to choose a different life, he lets it pass.
The story is framed by Sanjay’s journey on the 27 Down Bombay–Varanasi Express toward Varanasi. As he travels, episodes from his earlier life return: his decision to take railway employment to support his family, and his meeting with Shalini on a suburban train. The journey gives the film a present-tense route while the memories reveal how Sanjay arrived there.
How does the film use the railway?
The railway works in several ways at once. It is Sanjay’s place of employment, a public setting for encounters such as his meeting with Shalini, and the moving frame for his memories. The suburban train and the long-distance express place private decisions amid shared, everyday travel. Rather than reducing the railway to a single symbol, the film lets its functions overlap: livelihood, movement, routine and a route through the past.

The film’s production history also connects it to real public space. Scroll’s 2020 feature reports that cinematographer Apurba Kishore Bir was a first-time feature cinematographer on the project and chose to shoot on location amid crowds. Bir described his aim this way: “The mood, the tone, the characters needed a fresh perspective.” Scroll also reports that Bir was 22 when he got the project; that is a detail reported by the publication, not an independently verified biographical record.
Who made 27 Down, and what is it based on?
Kaul directed the film. NFDC’s 2024 catalogue lists it as a Hindi, black-and-white social feature, while the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) catalogue credits Ramesh Bakshi with the screenplay. Scroll identifies Bakshi’s 1966 novel Athara Sooraj Ke Paudhe as the source.

Bir recalled meeting Kaul in a passage quoted by Scroll: “We met at Samovar, and I was told that Awtar had come back from the US only to make a Hindi film.” This is Bir’s recollection as reported by Scroll, rather than a quotation from Kaul.
How was the film recognized, and why do its catalogue details differ?
The Directorate of Film Festivals’ 21st National Film Awards catalogue identifies 27 Down as the Best Hindi Film, produced and directed by Awtar Krishna Kaul. The catalogue notes that Kaul died on July 20, the same day the National Jury nominated the film for the award. NFDC also lists Best Cinematography among the film’s awards, and the inter-film archive records a Locarno Ecumenical Jury prize awarded ex aequo.

Film records do not agree on the year and runtime. NFDC’s 2024 catalogue lists the film as a 1974 feature running 118 minutes. Some festival and archive records use 1973 and 115 minutes. Those are catalogue differences, so the precise figure depends on which record is being cited.
