What this ranking measures—and what it does not
This is a ranking of votes in one 2020 poll’s Kanto category. It is not a ranking of every Pokémon in a single shared field: the official results were grouped by region, so these positions compare Pokémon first discovered in Kanto. Nor do vote totals measure sales, game usage, or an objective level of popularity across all fans.

The official poll’s overall winners came from across its regional categories. Greninja led that broader overall ranking with 140,559 votes; Lucario, Mimikyu, Charizard, and Umbreon followed. Those overall totals answer a different question and should not be compared as if they were Kanto-category results. Bulbapedia’s overview of the 2020 poll summarizes its regional categories and voting method; The Pokémon Company’s results remain the source for the Kanto ranks and counts above.
Why other Gen I polls produce different favorites
A Nintendo Life reader poll asked, “Which is your favourite Kanto Pokémon (Gen 1)?” Respondents could choose only one of all 151. Its 2026 results report 5,645 responses and show Charizard at 7%, Gengar at 6%, and Bulbasaur at 5%. Those percentages are rounded, so they do not establish exact vote totals or a precise order among entries that share a displayed percentage. The poll reflects Nintendo Life’s readers and its one-choice format, not a representative survey of all Pokémon fans. See Nintendo Life’s poll and results.

A separate all-time favorite survey discussed in a 2020 Journal of Geek Studies paper placed Charizard, Gengar, Arcanine, and Bulbasaur in its first four positions. That survey is not a correction to The Pokémon Company’s counts: different audiences, dates, eligible Pokémon, and voting rules can produce different rankings. The paper discusses exposure, nostalgia, and familiarity with starter Pokémon as possible influences on preferences.
