This watchlist collects 25 films and one television series associated with artificial intelligence, from stories about machine consciousness and human identity to dramas about surveillance and control. The “2021” in the original headline is the list’s framing, not its publication date: UMATechnology published the page on January 14, 2025. Its order is not supported by a stated ranking method, so treat it as a set of recommendations rather than an objective best-to-worst list.

How to use this AI watchlist

The entries vary in how directly they address artificial intelligence. Some put an artificial being or intelligent system at the center; others connect more loosely through virtual worlds, altered consciousness, or technology’s influence on people. The groupings below make that distinction visible and help match a film to the question or mood you want to explore.

Most of the list’s strongest through-lines are machine autonomy and control, consciousness and identity, surveillance, and emotional relationships between humans and artificial entities. The descriptions and credits below reflect the source page’s account; they should not be read as a verified film database. Two entries also need format clarification: Westworld is a television series, and “The Terminator series” refers to a franchise rather than one movie.

Stories about consciousness, personhood, and identity

Ex Machina (2014)

Directed by Alex Garland, this contained science-fiction story follows a programmer invited to evaluate Ava, an advanced AI. Its central questions concern consciousness, manipulation, free will, and the ethics of creating a being that may be sentient. The source names Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, and Oscar Isaac in the cast.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)

Steven Spielberg’s film follows David, a child-like android longing for love and acceptance. Its emotional focus on love, loss, and the meaning of being real makes it a natural choice for viewers interested in the human consequences of artificial beings. The source names Haley Joel Osment, Jude Law, and Frances O’Connor.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Denis Villeneuve’s sequel follows Officer K through questions of memory, identity, and humanity in a world of replicants—biologically engineered beings. The source names Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, and Ana de Armas.

Bicentennial Man (1999)

Directed by Chris Columbus, the film follows the android Andrew as he aspires to become human. Identity, love, and mortality anchor this more personal take on the boundary between person and machine. The source names Robin Williams, Sam Neill, and Embeth Davidtz.

Ghost in the Shell (1995)

Mamoru Oshii’s animated film follows Major Motoko Kusanagi as she investigates the Puppet Master. Its interest in consciousness, identity, and the soul makes it a distinctive choice for viewers drawn to philosophical cyberpunk. The source names Atsuko Tanaka and Iemasa Kayumi.

Alita: Battle Angel (2019)

Robert Rodriguez’s science-fiction adventure follows a cyborg with amnesia as she discovers her identity. Its connection to AI is through the questions it raises about consciousness and what makes a self. The source names Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, and Jennifer Connelly.

Stories about control, surveillance, and machine autonomy

The Matrix (1999)

Credited to Lilly and Lana Wachowski, the film imagines intelligent machines creating an illusory reality. Its enduring themes include reality, free will, and the consequences of technological power. The source names Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss.

I, Robot (2004)

Directed by Alex Proyas, this detective story begins with a possible violation of the First Law of Robotics. It uses the investigation to explore trust, control, and the possibility of rebellion. The source names Will Smith, Bridget Moynahan, and Alan Tudyk.

Eagle Eye (2008)

D.J. Caruso’s thriller follows people manipulated by an AI system capable of predicting actions. The premise connects AI to surveillance, privacy, and technological control. The source names Shia LaBeouf, Michelle Monaghan, and Rosario Dawson.

The Circle (2017)

James Ponsoldt’s film depicts a powerful technology company using AI to monitor behavior. Its concerns include privacy, transparency, and surveillance. The source names Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, and John Boyega.

RoboCop (1987)

Paul Verhoeven’s film follows Officer Murphy, revived as a cyborg police officer. Corporate power, the persistence of humanity, and redemption shape its take on technology and control. The source names Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, and Dan O’Herlihy.

The Terminator films (1984–2019, as grouped in the source)

This is a franchise, not a single movie: its installments depict machine rebellion and human survival. The source groups films directed by James Cameron and Tim Miller and names Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and Emilia Clarke; those broad credits do not describe every installment individually.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Stanley Kubrick’s film features HAL 9000, an intelligent computer whose role raises questions about trust, control, and machine capability. The source names Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, and William Sylvester.

Chappie (2015)

Neill Blomkamp’s film follows a police droid that gains AI capabilities and develops independent thought. Its story raises questions about prejudice and AI ethics. The source names Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, and Hugh Jackman.

Automata (2014)

In Gabe Ibáñez’s film, a robotics insurance agent discovers robots evolving beyond their programming. The story considers freedom and the responsibility creators hold toward what they build. The source names Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith, and Dylan McDermott.

Upgrade (2018)

Leigh Whannell’s thriller follows a man who gains AI capabilities after becoming paralyzed. It asks what enhancement might offer—and what it could mean to depend on technology integrated into the body. The source names Logan Marshall-Green, Betty Gabriel, and Harrison Gilbertson.

Stories about intimacy and emotional connection

Her (2013)

Spike Jonze’s film follows a man who forms an intimate relationship with Samantha, an AI operating system. Its subject is not only the system’s capabilities but also companionship, intimacy, and how technology shapes human relationships. The source names Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson.

I Am Mother (2019)

Grant Sputore’s film follows a robot raising a girl in a bunker. Nurture, rebellion, and AI’s possible role in rebuilding society are central to its premise. The source lists Hilary Swank and Lucy Palma, but that cast listing is not reliable enough to use as a complete or confirmed credit.

Four more indirect or borderline picks

These titles appear in the source list, but its own summaries make their AI connection less direct. They may suit viewers interested in adjacent questions about memory, technology, or virtual life, rather than those looking specifically for a story centered on AI.

The Giver (2014)

Phillip Noyce’s adaptation is not exclusively about AI. Its connection here is thematic: memory, individual experience, consciousness, and the tension between personal freedom and collective security. The source names Brenton Thwaites, Jeff Bridges, and Meryl Streep.

The Zero Theorem (2013)

Terry Gilliam’s film follows a programmer pursuing an equation about life’s meaning. Technology and existential questions are more prominent in the source’s description than a clearly defined AI-centered premise. The source names Christoph Waltz, Mélanie Thierry, and David Thewlis.

Annihilation (2018)

Alex Garland’s film follows a group entering the Shimmer, a phenomenon that distorts nature. Its connection to this list is transformation and consciousness, not an AI system clearly at the center of the story. The source names Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Tessa Thompson.

Ready Player One (2018)

Steven Spielberg’s film takes place in a virtual-reality world. Its link to AI is indirect in the source’s account, which connects it to identity, escapism, and community; it is better understood as a technology-centered adventure than as a film primarily about artificial intelligence. The source names Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, and Ben Mendelsohn.

Choosing a film by the question you want to explore

  • For consciousness and personhood: start with Ex Machina, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Blade Runner 2049, Bicentennial Man, Ghost in the Shell, or The Machine.
  • For control, surveillance, and autonomy: consider The Matrix, I, Robot, Eagle Eye, The Circle, RoboCop, or the Terminator films.
  • For emotional relationships with artificial beings: choose Her, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Bicentennial Man, or I Am Mother.
  • For a looser connection to AI: look to The Giver, The Zero Theorem, Annihilation, or Ready Player One, keeping in mind that AI is not equally central in these films.

What the list can—and cannot—tell you

UMATechnology’s page is dated January 14, 2025, despite presenting its recommendations under a 2021 headline. It supplies no reproducible method for ranking the titles, no named statistics, and no attributable expert or filmmaker quotations. Its ordering therefore signals the page’s presentation, not an independently established ranking of quality. It also does not establish current streaming availability or regional catalogs, so check the services available where you watch.
