Thai horror is at its best when it lets very different fears share the screen: a ghost rooted in local legend, an unsettling family secret, an occult threat, or a modern city made strange. This guide covers 25 notable Thai horror films, from the grief and folklore of Nang Nak to the comic retelling in Pee Mak and the photographic dread of Shutter. “Best” is an editorial judgment, not a definitive ranking; the selection favors films with cultural resonance, international reach, or a lasting place in conversation about Thai horror.

What makes Thai horror distinctive?

Thai horror does not follow a single formula. Ghost stories and local spirit traditions sit alongside psychological suspense, occult harm, urban anxieties, family drama, and comedy. The Thailand Foundation’s overview describes the genre as changing across eras: early films often drew on local phi legends; later works brought in urban life and comic elements; and films around 1997–2004 increasingly used polished psychological horror and modern settings. The Foundation characterizes the period from 2004 onward as one of reinterpretation and genre blending. Those are useful guideposts, rather than an uncontested periodization of Thai film history. Thailand Foundation’s history of Thai horror.

Some of the tradition’s most recognizable supernatural figures are not interchangeable “Asian ghosts.” Mae Nak Phra Khanong is a specific legend that has inspired numerous adaptations. Phi pop and phi krasue are distinct traditions with their own place in Thai popular culture and cinema. Films that use them draw on local beliefs and storytelling, even when they also work as contemporary genre entertainment.

  1. Shutter (2004)

A photographer and his girlfriend begin noticing a disturbing presence in their photographs. By placing ghost imagery inside an everyday technology, Shutter turns the familiar act of taking pictures into a source of dread. It is a strong starting point for viewers who want modern, urban supernatural horror. The Thailand Foundation identifies it as an internationally recognized Thai horror film and a major local hit.

  2. Nang Nak (1999)

This celebrated adaptation of the Mae Nak Phra Khanong legend approaches the story through grief, love, and the horror of a truth a husband cannot accept. It is a particularly rewarding choice for viewers interested in the cultural roots behind Thai ghost cinema. The Thailand Foundation reports that it became the first Thai movie to earn more than 100 million baht at the box office; the source does not give a more precise gross. The film was registered as national film heritage in 2014.

  3. The Medium

A documentary-style presentation gives this supernatural story an observational, unsettling feel. Choose it for a slower build and an atmosphere that blurs the line between everyday life and spiritual disturbance.

  4. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives

A contemplative, uncanny alternative to conventional scare-driven horror. Its supernatural elements are woven into reflection on memory, life, and death, making it a better fit for viewers drawn to atmosphere and ambiguity than to nonstop shocks.

  5. Inhuman Kiss

A contemporary take on the phi krasue tradition, in which a woman’s life is entangled with a supernatural condition. It offers a folklore-based story with romance and drama as well as horror.

  6. Pee Mak (2013)

This romantic comedy-horror retells the Mae Nak story from Mak’s perspective, contrasting the legend’s tragic undertow with comic misunderstandings among friends. It is a natural pick if you want Thai ghost lore without an entirely grim tone. The Thailand Foundation describes it as a comic retelling of the same legend that inspired Nang Nak.

  7. Alone

A psychological ghost story built around a family relationship and a past that refuses to stay buried. Consider it if you like personal, emotionally charged horror more than a broad folklore survey.

  8. 4bia

An anthology that moves between different horror scenarios and tones. Its segmented format works well for viewers who want several compact scares rather than one continuous supernatural mystery.

  9. Body

A grim psychological thriller with an unsettling, bodily edge. It suits viewers looking for a darker, more disorienting experience than a traditional ghost story.

  10. Laddaland

Domestic life and supernatural fear collide in this modern family-centered horror film. The familiar home setting gives its ghostly unease an everyday, social dimension.

  11. Dorm

A school setting gives this ghost story an eerie, enclosed atmosphere. It is a good option for viewers who enjoy youthful characters, quiet suspense, and a haunted-place mood.

  12. Phobia 2

A follow-up anthology offering multiple stories and approaches to fear. Like 4bia, it is a convenient choice when you want variety in one film rather than a single sustained plot.

  13. The Unseeable

A period-set ghost story with a more classical, atmospheric approach. Its historical setting makes it a useful counterpoint to the modern urban unease found in films such as Shutter.

  14. Rahtree: Flower of the Night

A darkly comic horror film whose ghost story is tied to an urban apartment setting. It is a fit for viewers who enjoy an unsettling premise with a streak of black humor.

  15. Art of the Devil 2

Occult harm and revenge drive this entry in a strand of Thai horror known for its harsher, more graphic sensibility. Choose it for extreme supernatural menace rather than a gentle introduction to the genre.

    Rank #4
  16. Death Whisperer

A family-centered supernatural horror choice for viewers drawn to ominous presences and escalating danger. Its place in this selection reflects the continued appeal of ghost stories in contemporary Thai cinema.

  17. Coming Soon

A horror story that turns the experience of watching a frightening film into part of the threat. It is a strong pick for viewers who like stories about cinema, performance, and the uncanny.

  18. 13: Game of Death

A pressure-cooker thriller structured around a dangerous series of challenges. It leans toward human cruelty and escalating psychological stress rather than traditional folklore.

  19. Bangkok Haunted

An anthology linked by the setting and atmosphere of Bangkok. It offers a city-focused route into Thai supernatural storytelling, with multiple tales rather than one central narrative.

  20. The Victim

A psychological horror film that draws on performance and the public image of crime. Try it if you like stories where uncertainty about what is real becomes part of the menace.

  21. Art of the Devil

An occult revenge story and an early point of entry into Thai horror’s interest in curses and supernatural harm. It is more suitable for viewers comfortable with bleak, disturbing material.

  22. Nymph

A forest-set supernatural story with an eerie, folkloric mood. Its natural setting provides a change of pace from apartment blocks, schools, and city streets.

  23. The Promise

A modern ghost story shaped by friendship, memory, and a past commitment. It is a good choice for viewers who prefer emotional ties to drive the supernatural mystery.

  24. Meat Grinder

A graphic, extreme horror option, far removed from the restrained atmosphere of a film like Nang Nak. Approach it if you are specifically seeking confrontational material.
