For a first John Wayne movie, start with Stagecoach (1939) to see the Western role that helped establish his screen presence, or True Grit (1969) for the performance that won him his only Academy Award. This ranking weighs Wayne’s performance and screen presence, filmmaking craft, career significance, and critical or historical standing. It is an editorial selection, not an official or universally settled order.

How this ranking weighs the films

Wayne’s filmography ranges across eras, genres, and kinds of roles, so a single ranking inevitably reflects its criteria. The choices below balance four considerations: the strength and complexity of Wayne’s performance, the filmmaking around him, what each film contributes to his career or screen persona, and durable critical or historical recognition. Those factors do not always point to the same film, and viewers who prize one above the others may rank the list differently.

The American Film Institute provides useful reference points, but not a definitive Wayne top 25. AFI’s person page lists 202 filmography titles across credited roles; its separate cast-only view lists 69. These catalog totals have different scopes and should not be mistaken for 202 starring performances. AFI’s John Wayne record

25 best John Wayne movies, ranked

1. The Searchers (1956)

Wayne’s Ethan Edwards is one of his most unsettling and layered screen characters: a relentless searcher whose courage and hatred coexist. John Ford’s Western offers a grand adventure while refusing to make its hero uncomplicated. Its tension between mythic scale and moral unease makes it a defining Wayne performance.

2. Stagecoach (1939)

As the Ringo Kid, Wayne brought an assured, quietly charismatic presence to John Ford’s Western about passengers crossing dangerous territory together. Claire Trevor co-stars, and Dudley Nichols wrote the screenplay. AFI records a Best Picture Academy Award nomination and notes the film is frequently credited with elevating Wayne’s career and the Western’s status, while recognizing that other major Westerns appeared around the same time. It is a landmark, though not the sole cause of either development. AFI’s Stagecoach catalog record

3. True Grit (1969)

Wayne’s Rooster Cogburn is gruff, comic, and unexpectedly vulnerable, giving his familiar authority a new shape. Henry Hathaway directed the Western, which also stars Kim Darby and Glen Campbell. The role won Wayne his only Academy Award, for Best Actor, as well as a Golden Globe for dramatic actor, according to AFI. AFI’s True Grit catalog record

4. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)

Ford’s reflective Western turns on the gap between what happened and the story a community chooses to remember. Wayne’s Tom Doniphon is a reserved counterweight to the public-minded lawyer played by James Stewart. The role is compelling precisely because Wayne’s strength is expressed through restraint and sacrifice.

5. Red River (1948)

Howard Hawks gives Wayne a demanding role as a cattle-drive boss whose drive for control threatens the people closest to him. Montgomery Clift plays his adopted son, and their conflict gives the Western the force of a family drama. Wayne’s performance shows how effectively his imposing screen persona could become a source of danger.

6. Rio Bravo (1959)

Wayne’s sheriff, holding a prisoner while facing a threatening gang, relies on patience and teamwork rather than a quick rescue. Hawks builds the story around the people who stay to help, including characters played by Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, and Walter Brennan. It is a relaxed, character-focused Western with an unusually strong ensemble.

7. The Quiet Man (1952)

In Ford’s romantic comedy-drama, Wayne plays Sean Thornton, an American who returns to Ireland and falls in love with Mary Kate Danaher, played by Maureen O’Hara. The film steps away from the Western roles most associated with Wayne and gives him room for warmth, awkwardness, and humor. It is an essential pick for viewers who want to see his range beyond frontier stories.

8. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949)

Wayne plays Captain Nathan Brittles, a cavalry officer nearing retirement, in the middle entry of Ford’s cavalry trilogy. Rather than making the character a young action hero, the film draws its drama from experience, responsibility, and the prospect of leaving command. The performance is measured and humane.

9. The Wings of Eagles (1957)

Ford directs Wayne as Frank “Spig” Wead, a naval aviator whose life takes an unexpected turn after an accident. The film’s strongest interest is not combat spectacle but the persistence required to find another way to serve. It offers a biographical drama distinct from Wayne’s familiar Western persona.

10. The Shootist (1976)

Wayne’s aging gunfighter, John Bernard Books, confronts mortality in a late-career Western that gives the actor a role shaped by time and consequence. Don Siegel directs; the supporting cast includes Lauren Bacall and Ron Howard. The film’s reflective tone makes it a natural choice for viewers interested in Wayne’s final screen years.

11. Fort Apache (1948)

In Ford’s first cavalry film, Wayne plays Captain Kirby York, a capable officer caught in a conflict over judgment and command. Henry Fonda’s Lieutenant Colonel Thursday is his superior, and their contrasting approaches drive the story. The film’s military setting gives Wayne’s authority a different context from the lone-gunslinger role.

12. Hondo (1953)

Wayne plays Hondo Lane, a scout whose arrival at an isolated homestead leads to uneasy decisions about protection, trust, and conflict. The compact Western makes good use of Wayne’s directness without needing to turn him into an invulnerable legend. It is a strong option for viewers who want a more intimate story.

13. The Sands of Iwo Jima (1949)

Wayne plays Marine Sergeant John Stryker in a war film focused on discipline, combat, and the strain between a hard-driving leader and the men under him. The role draws on his stern authority, but the story also asks what that authority costs. It is a key non-Western choice in his career.

14. Rio Grande (1950)

Ford’s third cavalry film pairs Wayne’s Lieutenant Colonel Kirby York with a family conflict as well as military duties. Maureen O’Hara plays his estranged wife, bringing a personal counterpoint to the film’s frontier setting. The result is an accessible mix of Western action and domestic drama.

15. The Longest Day (1962)

This large-scale account of the Normandy landings gives Wayne a supporting role as Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Vandervoort. Its ensemble approach makes it a useful contrast to films built around him alone: Wayne contributes familiar command and presence within a much broader war narrative.

16. The Cowboys (1972)

Wayne plays a rancher who must recruit schoolboys for a cattle drive after his adult crew leaves. The premise puts his seasoned authority in a relationship with young and inexperienced companions, creating room for both mentorship and danger. It is a later Western that tests the limits of the tough, self-reliant hero.

17. The Horse Soldiers (1959)

Wayne and William Holden play officers leading a Union cavalry raid behind Confederate lines in Ford’s Civil War adventure. Their disagreement gives the story a second source of tension alongside the mission itself. Wayne’s performance is firm and practical, set against Holden’s more skeptical presence.

18. The Sons of Katie Elder (1965)

Wayne joins Dean Martin, Earl Holliman, and Michael Anderson Jr. as four brothers returning home after their mother’s death. The Western’s family framework gives Wayne a different kind of loyalty to express: not just duty to a town or a cause, but responsibility among siblings with their own conflicts.

19. McLintock! (1963)

In this comic Western, Wayne plays cattle baron George Washington McLintock, with Maureen O’Hara as his estranged wife. The broad humor and domestic clashes make it a useful detour for viewers who know Wayne chiefly from serious frontier dramas. Its tone is deliberately rowdier than his most restrained films.

20. The Comancheros (1961)

Wayne plays Texas Ranger Jake Cutter in Michael Curtiz’s adventure Western, paired with Stuart Whitman as a gambler caught up in a larger conflict. The film favors forward momentum and colorful action over the moral ambiguity of Wayne’s most searching roles. It is an entertaining example of his straightforward action-hero mode.

21. The Undefeated (1969)

Wayne and Rock Hudson lead this post-Civil War Western, which follows former Union and Confederate soldiers into a new landscape of alliances and conflict. Their contrasting screen personas give the film much of its appeal. It offers a later-career Wayne performance in a broad, ensemble-driven adventure.

22. 3 Godfathers (1948)

Ford’s Western reworks the story of three outlaws who find themselves caring for an infant in the desert. Wayne’s role lets him shift from tough outlaw to reluctant caretaker, a change that gives the film its emotional center. Its unusual premise makes it one of the more distinctive Ford-Wayne collaborations.

23. The Alamo (1960)

Wayne directed and starred as Davy Crockett in this historical battle epic. Its scale and place in Wayne’s career are central to its interest, even for viewers who find its larger-than-life approach less persuasive than the intimate character work in his strongest films. It belongs on a career survey for the ambition of the undertaking as well as the performance.

24. In Harm’s Way (1965)

Otto Preminger’s naval drama casts Wayne as a senior officer facing personal and military crises during the Second World War. The film’s broader ensemble and more somber register distinguish it from his compact action vehicles. It is a worthwhile choice for viewers exploring Wayne’s work outside the Western genre.

25. The Fighting Seabees (1944)

Wayne plays a construction foreman drawn into military service in this wartime drama. The film catches his screen persona in an earlier phase, before the mature Western roles that would define much of his reputation. Its historical value as a career waypoint makes it a useful final entry, even if it is not the strongest film here on craft alone.

What the AFI recognition does—and does not—tell you

AFI reported in 2020 that Stagecoach ranked No. 63 on its original list of the greatest American films. That is a film-level placement on an all-time list, not a John Wayne performance ranking or a verdict on the full filmography. It is one useful point of comparison, not a substitute for weighing the films by the criteria above. AFI’s 2020 Stagecoach retrospective
