Availability checked: April 2026 (U.S.). Disney+ is not only a family service. Its adult catalogue includes awards-season dramas, documentaries, dark comedies, serious historical films and R-rated comic-book movies. The 25 selections below are arranged from the strongest overall adult recommendations to more specific moods and genres.
Catalogues vary by country, rights window and subscription tier. Eligible Disney+/Hulu bundle subscribers may see on-demand Hulu titles inside Disney+; check your plan and location before starting a film. Disney’s April 2026 schedule is a dated U.S. snapshot, not a promise that every title joined during that month.
How to choose a Disney+ movie tonight
Use the list by mood rather than assuming “adult” means grim. For comfort, try Ratatouille or The Grand Budapest Hotel. For a challenge, choose Black Swan, The Last Duel or Fight Club. For suspense, pick The Menu or Prey. If you want a documentary, Free Solo, Fire of Love and The Beatles: Get Back offer very different kinds of real-world drama.
Also consider maturity level, franchise dependence, runtime tolerance and emotional intensity. Several entries contain explicit violence, sexual material, body horror or traumatic historical themes; the notes below flag those concerns.

The 25 best Disney+ movies for adults
1. The Banshees of Inisherin
Martin McDonagh’s dark friendship fable turns a rural falling-out into a study of grief, isolation and the damage people inflict when they cannot accept change. Its mordant humor is adult without becoming cynical, and the quiet setting makes every silence feel consequential.
2. Poor Things
This surreal, visually maximalist coming-of-age drama follows a woman rebuilding her understanding of the world on her own terms. Its mature sexual themes, grotesque comedy and flamboyant production design make it a natural choice for viewers seeking something formally bold rather than conventional.
3. The French Dispatch
Wes Anderson structures this as a magazine anthology, moving through literary stories, eccentric performances and meticulously composed frames. The jokes reward attention to language and cultural detail, while the melancholy underneath gives the visual precision emotional weight.
4. Jojo Rabbit
An adolescent viewpoint exposes the absurdity of fascism in this anti-hate satire. The comic surface is accessible, but the historical stakes, violence and treatment of indoctrination are firmly adult. It works best when the tonal collision feels purposeful rather than comforting.

A compact horror-comedy about a rarefied restaurant becomes a sharp class satire. The controlled setting, escalating tension and conversation-starting ideas make it an excellent one-night pick when you want suspense with something to discuss afterward.
6. Nomadland
Chloé Zhao’s quiet road drama follows a woman navigating precarious work, loss and a chosen community. Its observational pace and humane performances favor reflection over plot mechanics, making it especially good for a contemplative evening.
7. Ford v Ferrari
This accessible engineering and sports drama combines racing spectacle with an adult friendship at its center. Workplace conflict, corporate pressure and competing ideas of craftsmanship keep it from being merely a victory story.
8. Hidden Figures
The historical drama celebrates the Black women mathematicians whose work supported NASA while showing the institutional barriers they had to overcome. Teamwork and professional competence drive the uplift, giving the film substance beyond its inspirational finish.

For optimistic science fiction, Ridley Scott’s survival film makes problem-solving the suspense engine. Engineering, cooperation and practical ingenuity carry the story, so it suits adults who prefer earned hope to dystopian bleakness.
10. Free Solo
This National Geographic documentary follows extraordinary climbing risk through disciplined preparation rather than sensationalism alone. The real-world stakes are immediate, and the film’s attention to psychology makes it gripping even for viewers who know little about climbing.
11. Fire of Love
Built from archival volcano footage, this documentary is both a scientific portrait and a love story. Its reflective tone and awe-inspiring images suit viewers who want nonfiction that connects research, intimacy and mortality.
12. The Beatles: Get Back
Adults interested in creative process and cultural history will find the value in watching collaboration unfold. The documentary’s focus is not simply on famous songs, but on disagreement, experimentation and the practical work behind a public mythology.

This adult historical drama retells the same alleged assault through conflicting testimony, examining power, reputation and gendered violence. It requires a content warning for sexual violence and an understanding that its competing perspectives are part of the film’s argument, not interchangeable truths.
14. Prey
A lean survival action film with a Comanche-led perspective, Prey gives a familiar franchise premise a focused historical and cultural setting. Its pace and physical storytelling make it a strong choice for serious viewers who want action without excessive continuity homework.

15. Logan
This gritty superhero road movie treats its characters’ exhaustion, grief and responsibility as more than franchise decoration. Explicit violence and an elegiac tone warrant a maturity warning, but the emotional directness makes it one of the genre’s most adult entries.
16. Deadpool & Wolverine
Choose this for R-rated comic-book spectacle, irreverent humor and multiverse cameos. It depends more heavily on superhero familiarity than several films above, so it is best for viewers who want maximal fan-service energy rather than a self-contained drama.

17. Black Swan
Darren Aronofsky’s psychological body-horror drama turns ambition and control into an increasingly unstable physical experience. Disturbing imagery, sexual content, self-harm themes and intense psychological distress make this one of the list’s strongest content-warning cases.
18. The Grand Budapest Hotel
Wes Anderson’s fast, stylized comedy-drama hides melancholy beneath its visual precision. Its playful narration, ensemble performances and shifting historical backdrop reward adults who want something light on the surface but emotionally bittersweet underneath.
19. Fight Club
David Fincher’s controversial satire targets consumerism, masculine identity and the desire to escape an ordinary life. Because its narrator is unreliable and its violence can be misread as an endorsement, watch it as a critique whose style deliberately complicates its message.
20. The Shape of Water
This adult romantic fantasy blends political allegory, sensuality and classic monster-movie craft. Its period setting and outsider romance support a story about power and exclusion, while sexual content and violence make it unsuitable for children despite the fairy-tale framework.
21. Soul
Pixar’s philosophical animation asks whether a life’s value can be reduced to achievement. Its treatment of purpose, mortality and creative disappointment speaks directly to adults, even as its accessible humor keeps the film welcoming for mixed-age viewing.
22. WALL-E
Much of its first act is visual storytelling: a lonely robot, an abandoned Earth and a civilization shaped by consumption. The eco-social science-fiction critique remains clear without overwhelming the character-driven tenderness, making it unusually rewarding for adults.
23. Ratatouille
This warm craft-and-ambition story is a genuinely adult-friendly comfort watch. Its ideas about taste, gatekeeping, apprenticeship and creative work give grown viewers plenty to enjoy beyond the family-accessible premise.
24. Coco
Coco treats memory, ancestry and grief with unusual richness for a family film. Its emotional stakes are easy to share across ages, while its attention to family history gives adults a particularly resonant reason to revisit it.

This large-scale superhero adventure combines multiverse spectacle with themes of loss, responsibility and the consequences of trying to undo pain. Its appeal is strongest for established Spider-Man viewers, and its Disney+ availability was part of the service’s 2026 U.S. catalogue conversation.

What “Disney+ movies for adults” means in April 2026
Disney positions the service as the streaming home for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic, alongside Disney+ Originals. In practice, the U.S. adult selection also depends on licensing, Hulu eligibility and regional rights. Disney’s April schedule lists additions such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, Orangutan, Secrets of the Bees and Songs in Sign Language; that schedule should be read as an April availability snapshot, not as an assertion that every film in this ranking premiered on the service that month.
Rotten Tomatoes’ Disney+ browse page can help with discovery, but a browse listing is not a guarantee of rights in your region. If a title is missing, search Disney+ while signed into your account and verify whether your plan includes the relevant Hulu catalogue.
