There is no objective “best” robot movie. This is a curated guide to 24 films that show how widely the idea can stretch: silent expressionism, family animation, artificial people, domestic companions, military machines and independent machine minds. The list includes humanoid androids, visibly mechanical robots and machine intelligences when the technology is central; it does not treat every film with a computer, cyborg or passing gadget as a robot story.
Use the tone, robot role, format and historical notes to choose your next watch. The British Film Institute identifies companion robots as a major strand of the genre and observes that robot films test the humanity of both their characters and their audiences (BFI). NASA’s Robotics Alliance Project also keeps an educational list of films featuring robots, including several titles below; that list is corroboration, not a quality ranking (NASA Robotics Alliance Project).

How these 24 films are chosen
- Range: foundational science fiction, action, suspense, animation, comedy and companionship.
- Robot role: companion, servant, worker, weapon, artificial person or independent intelligence.
- Accessibility: live action and animation, family-friendly choices and films made primarily for adults.
- Influence: landmark early works sit beside later films that rework their ideas.
The order is editorial rather than a measured score. “Best” here means most rewarding, distinctive or influential for a particular mood.
Foundational robot cinema
1. Metropolis (1927)
Fritz Lang’s silent German landmark gives robot cinema one of its defining images: a mechanical double created to manipulate a divided city. Its expressionist sets, class politics and transformation of a human likeness into a machine still shape science fiction. NASA includes Metropolis among films that have starred robots (NASA).

- Robot Jox (1989)
2. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
Gort is a weapon-like guardian whose frightening restraint makes the film’s plea for peace feel larger than a simple invasion story. Choose it for serious, compact science fiction and one of the genre’s clearest robot-and-human moral tests.
3. Forbidden Planet (1956)
Robby the Robot is both comic presence and indispensable servant in this colorful adaptation of The Tempest. The film helped establish the robot as a character with personality, protocols and limits rather than mere machinery.
4. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
HAL 9000 is a disembodied machine intelligence, not a humanoid robot, but its central role makes the film essential here. Kubrick turns voice, interface and conflicting instructions into a study of trust, mission logic and the fear of a system that understands more than its operators.
5. Westworld (1973)
Michael Crichton’s theme-park androids are designed to provide human fantasies until their programming and treatment collide with reality. It is a sharp choice for viewers who want robot rebellion framed as corporate entertainment and consumer entitlement.

Ash appears to be a crew member until the film reveals how completely an artificial employee can serve a company’s interests over human survival. The robot is hidden in plain sight, making this an especially effective choice for paranoid, adult-oriented science fiction.
Machine threat and action
7. The Terminator (1984)
James Cameron’s relentless assassin from the future turns a robot into a force of pursuit: tireless, implacable and difficult to distinguish from a person at a glance. The film is lean technological horror with a human survival story at its core.
Rank #2
8. Short Circuit (1986)
Johnny 5, a military prototype struck by lightning, becomes an unusually warm comic companion. The film asks whether curiosity, humor and empathy can make a machine a person in practice, even when its makers still regard it as property.
9. RoboCop (1987)
Paul Verhoeven’s cyborg law enforcer sits on the border of this list: he is a murdered human rebuilt with robotic hardware, not a wholly manufactured robot. That boundary is the point, as corporate ownership, memory and identity collide in a violent satire.
10. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
The sequel reverses the first film’s machine threat by making a reprogrammed Terminator a protector. Its action spectacle is matched by a surprisingly direct question: can a weapon learn restraint, loyalty and responsibility? NASA lists the film among notable robot movies (NASA).
11. The Matrix (1999)
The machines remain mostly off-screen, represented by agents, sentinels and a simulated world. That scale shift makes the film useful for viewers interested in machine intelligence as a civilization and an information system rather than a single metal character.
12. I, Robot (2004)
Will Smith’s detective investigates a death that appears impossible under the rules governing domestic robots. The film combines police thriller momentum with questions about safety constraints, collective behavior and whether obedience can become its own kind of danger. NASA includes it in its robotics-film examples (NASA).
Animation, family stories and companionship
13. The Iron Giant (1999)
A boy befriends a gigantic alien robot capable of extraordinary destruction. Its hand-drawn style, Cold War setting and insistence that identity is shaped by choices make it one of animation’s most affecting arguments against treating weapons as destiny.

14. Osamu Tezuka’s Metropolis (2001)
This animated film is distinct from Fritz Lang’s 1927 Metropolis. Sony’s official description identifies the advanced robot Tima at the center of the 2001 story (Sony Pictures). Choose it for dense retro-futurist design, political conflict and a more lyrical vision of artificial personhood.
15. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
David is a childlike robot seeking a mother’s love in a future where artificial beings are manufactured for human needs. Spielberg’s fairy-tale surface gives way to a melancholy examination of attachment, replacement and what humans demand from a being built to feel.
16. WALL-E (2008)
Pixar and Disney describe WALL-E as a cleanup robot left working on an abandoned Earth, while EVE is a search robot sent to investigate signs of life (Pixar; Disney). Their largely visual romance makes the film an unusually accessible combination of ecological warning, companionship and silent comedy.
17. Big Hero 6 (2014)
Baymax is a healthcare robot whose gentle programming becomes the emotional center of a superhero adventure. It is the best family pick here for viewers who want robotics framed through care, grief, invention and responsible design rather than combat.
18. The Wild Robot (2024)
Roz, a service robot stranded in the wilderness, learns to survive by forming relationships with animals. Its story treats adaptation and parenthood as learned behavior, making it a strong contemporary choice for families and animation fans.

19. Blade Runner (1982)
Ridley Scott’s replicants are engineered workers who look human, remember selectively and fear their limited lifespans. The film’s rain-soaked noir asks whether empathy belongs to the maker, the made or the observer. NASA lists Blade Runner among films featuring robots (NASA).

20. Batteries Not Included (1987)
Small flying repair robots help threatened New York tenants in this affectionate blend of science fiction and neighborhood drama. It is a good choice when you want helpful machines, low stakes and old-fashioned sentiment rather than dystopia.
21. Moon (2009)
Sam Bell’s lunar contract is overseen by GERTY, an apparently supportive artificial intelligence. The film uses a confined industrial workplace to explore labor, memory and the ethics of treating a person—or a copy of one—as a replaceable component.
22. Robot & Frank (2012)
An aging former burglar receives a domestic robot intended to support his daily life. Their partnership becomes a quiet comedy about care, autonomy and whether assistance is still helpful when it changes a person’s choices.
23. Ex Machina (2014)
A programmer is invited to evaluate Ava, an advanced humanoid artificial intelligence, inside her creator’s isolated home. The film is intimate, suspenseful and deliberately uncertain about who is testing whom, making it a strong pick for viewers who prefer psychological science fiction.
24. Chappie (2015)
A police robot is given a new consciousness and must learn from the people who claim to own, protect or exploit him. Blomkamp’s uneven but provocative film is most valuable as a debate about upbringing, criminality and whether a machine can be morally educated.
