Its making involved a Chicago-area location shoot, a high-school gym converted into elaborate sets, snow-continuity logistics and stunt work built for the camera. Here are 23 production stories, with personal memories identified as recollections rather than settled production records.
How the story and cast came together
1. A family-trip worry became the premise
John Hughes developed the idea after wondering what might happen if a child were accidentally left behind while a family traveled. TIME traced the premise to Hughes’s own travel concerns and quoted his account of imagining what his 10-year-old son might do at home alone: TIME’s 2019 retrospective.
2. The first draft was reportedly written in a rush
Hughes’s son James recalled that his father completed the first draft in nine days, with the final 44 pages written in eight hours, according to TIME. That is a family recollection reported decades later, not a surviving production log.
3. Chris Columbus came aboard after a difficult meeting
Columbus directed the film Hughes wrote and produced. A 2025 AOL roundup, drawing on a Chicago oral history, says Columbus had been considered for National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and recalled a negative meeting with Chevy Chase before taking on Home Alone. The colorful account is Columbus’s memory, not an independently documented casting record.

4. Macaulay Culkin was one choice among many children
Columbus said he saw 200 children and reviewed hundreds of videotapes before Culkin read for Kevin, according to the AOL retrospective. The numbers should be understood as Columbus’s reported account of the search.
5. Kieran Culkin played Fuller
Macaulay’s younger brother Kieran appears as Fuller, Kevin’s cousin. The younger Culkin later said he did not understand the story while working on the film; that is his retrospective account, not a statement about what he knew at every point on set.
6. Joe Pesci bit Macaulay Culkin during rehearsal, Culkin later recalled
Culkin has said Pesci bit him while rehearsing the scene in which Harry threatens to bite Kevin’s fingers. TIME reported Culkin’s recollection that the bite broke the skin. It is a story told by Culkin years later, rather than a detail established by a production report.
Chicago became both the setting and the production base
7. The movie was filmed in the Chicago area
Although the story is set in the Chicago suburbs, the production was local too. The American Film Institute (AFI) Catalog records filming in the Chicago area, including Winnetka, Oak Park, Northfield and O’Hare Airport: AFI Catalog’s production account.

8. The McCallister home supplied the exterior
The house at 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka provided the famous exterior. AFI notes a small on-screen discrepancy: the address is given in the film as “671 Lincoln Boulevard.” The location helped anchor a suburban fantasy in a real neighborhood, but the property was a lived-in family home during production.
9. The homeowners stayed through most of the shoot
Vanity Fair reported that the Abendshien family spent only a few nights in a rented apartment and otherwise remained in the house while the production worked there. Their home was not simply handed over as an empty set: filming had to coexist with the household.
10. A high school became a major soundstage
New Trier West High School in Northfield housed substantial interior sets, including the McCallister house and an American Airlines 747 interior. AFI says crews used the school gym for these builds, turning an existing institutional space into a flexible production site.
11. The flooded-basement set was built in a swimming pool
The school’s swimming pool was used for the flooded-basement sequence. The choice fits the production’s practical approach: a real pool could contain the water needed for the scene without flooding an actual house interior.

12. The production drew on more Chicago-area locations
AFI also lists Grace Episcopal Church in Oak Park, Hubbard Woods and O’Hare Airport among the locations. The film’s local geography therefore extends well beyond the recognizable Winnetka house.
13. The house-cutting scene involved a real tree, according to a homeowner’s family
Lauren Abendshien recalled in the 2024 documentary The House From… that production used a real tree for the tree-cutting scene, according to the AOL roundup. The account supports the presence of a real tree, but should not be taken to mean Culkin personally felled it.
Weather and practical filmmaking shaped what appears on screen
14. Natural snow was not enough for continuity
AFI’s production account says natural snow fell, but the crew also needed artificial materials to keep the look consistent across shots. Weather could change between takes and locations, so matching the landscape mattered as much as capturing snowfall.
15. Crews moved hundreds of tons of snow
AFI records that 375 tons of natural snow were removed and replaced with materials used to create a uniform appearance. The catalog lists 360 tons of shaved ice, 6,250 yards of snow blanket, 11,000 gallons of runway foam, 6,000 pounds of potato flakes, 1,000 pounds of mini-fibers and polyurethane snow. These are production-account figures; they do not mean every material appeared in every exterior shot.

16. Cold weather caused camera trouble
Columbus recalled that cameras froze on two cold nights during location work, in an interview with The Independent. The anecdote points to a less polished side of the snowy setting: winter conditions were a practical challenge as well as part of the film’s look.
17. The burglars’ falls were performed as stunts
Columbus has described Harry and Marv’s elaborate mishaps as practical stunts performed by stunt professionals. The film’s bruising comic rhythm depended on choreographed physical action; Columbus’s recollections do not establish that the movie used no visual effects at all.
18. The aftershave scream grew in performance
Columbus recalled that Culkin held his hands to his cheeks longer than the action had been written, prompting the crew to laugh. The familiar beat was shaped by the timing of the performance, according to the director’s account in the AOL retrospective.

19. Angels with Filthy Souls was made for this film
The black-and-white gangster movie Kevin watches is not an excerpt from a real vintage feature. Angels with Filthy Souls was created for Home Alone, according to AFI’s production account.

20. The fake gangster film was shot in one day
The short film-within-the-film was shot in a day on a small set in the abandoned New Trier West High School gym. Its deliberately old-fashioned black-and-white look makes it feel as if Kevin has found a much older movie, even though it was made specifically for the 1990 production.
21. Buzz’s girlfriend photograph used a boy
Devin Ratray, who played Buzz, recalled that the art director’s son was made up for the photograph. According to the AOL retrospective, Columbus felt it would be unkind to cast an actual girl for the joke. That explanation is Ratray’s reported recollection of the production choice.
22. Chris Farley reportedly auditioned to play Santa
Actor Ken Hudson Campbell recalled that Farley auditioned for the Santa role before Campbell was cast, according to AOL’s roundup. It is an actor’s anecdote, not a casting detail documented in AFI’s production record.
23. John Candy improvised a long story in a single day
AFI attributes to Columbus the account that Candy improvised his polka-band story to Kate. Candy’s filming lasted one day, which AFI says ran 23 hours. The brief scene’s rambling warmth came from an unusually extended workday and an improvised performance.

Home Alone opened on November 16, 1990. Hughes wrote and produced it, and Columbus directed it; AFI’s catalog and the 20th Century Studios title page identify the film and its core creative team. The contrast between Kevin’s enclosed, child-sized adventure and the production’s large-scale logistics is part of its enduring appeal: the house was real, the interiors were reconstructed at a school, the snow had to be managed, and the stunts were planned rather than improvised danger.
The film also exceeded expectations by a wide margin, although the historical figures have different scopes. AFI’s catalog cites a reported $18.2 million production budget and a 1993 reported gross of $285 million; it also records that the studio initially expected $70–80 million in ticket sales. TIME’s 2019 retrospective gives a domestic box-office figure of $285,761,343. These are historical reports, not a single current worldwide total.
