This title promises a ranked list of 22 films, but no 22-film slate or film-specific evidence is established here. Naming and ranking movies without verifying their years, directors, and supporting context would create an arbitrary list, not a reliable documentary-minded guide. What can be established is how to interpret the best-known reference point—and what a transparent all-time ranking would need to disclose.
Why “greatest comedy movies of all time” needs a clear scope
The phrase suggests a worldwide, across-eras selection. The American Film Institute’s 100 Years…100 Laughs, by contrast, is explicitly a list of the funniest American films. It is a useful point of comparison, not a substitute for a global ranking and not the source of an unstated 22-film lineup.

Comedy is also not one style. AFI recognizes forms including slapstick, romantic comedy, satire, black comedy, musical comedy, comedy of manners, and comedy of errors. A defensible ranking should make room for those differences rather than treating every film as if it were trying to produce the same kind of laugh.
What AFI’s ranking does—and does not—establish
AFI says its original list process involved a ballot of 500 nominated films sent to 1,800 film-community leaders, including artists, critics, historians, and film executives. Its criteria included feature-length narrative form, eligibility as an American film, total comedic impact regardless of genre, and legacy in American film culture. AFI describes the list as a prompt for discussion about what makes a film great, not a final answer for every audience.

There is also a dated update to keep distinct from the list page’s displayed order. In an announcement dated June 28, 2026, AFI said it advanced Blazing Saddles (1974) to number one through an “honorary reorganization” marking Mel Brooks’s centennial. The AFI list page displays Some Like It Hot (1959) at number one. Those are different presentations or states of AFI’s list; neither establishes a universal consensus about the funniest film. AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale said, “We’re happy to right this wrong as Mel celebrates his centennial.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a credible 22-film ranking should disclose
An all-time list should state its eligible period and whether it includes films from every national cinema or only a defined region. It should also explain how it weighs comic construction and performance, originality, influence and durability, and range of style. The ordering is editorial judgment: those criteria help readers assess the choices, but they cannot turn subjective appreciation into an objective measurement of funniness.
Rank #2
Without a specified selection of 22 films and verified film-level facts, a ranked list would risk misrepresenting both the works and the basis for placing them. The available evidence supports explaining the scope problem and AFI context; it does not support inventing entries or claiming that AFI chose a particular set of 22.
