There is no official “most luxurious” ranking, and the 21 locations below are a subjective selection drawn from published travel and architecture lists, not a McDonald’s designation. Treat them as ideas to verify before a visit: openings, access and distinctive features can change.
What “luxurious” means on this list
Here, the word refers to a restaurant’s setting or design: a historic building, striking interior, unusual landscape or themed experience. McDonald’s itself recognizes that restaurants can be notable for their buildings, themes and local settings; its U.S. “iconic” list, for example, includes the Freeport mansion, Sedona’s teal arches and Roswell’s UFO-themed restaurant (McDonald’s’ iconic restaurants). No comparable statistic measures restaurant luxury, so the entries are not ranked by an objective score.
The list adapts the 21 places selected by Cozymeal, supplemented with architectural and company information where available. It is a starting point, not an official directory or a guarantee that every restaurant remains open or retains the features described (Cozymeal’s selection).

How McDonald’s design varies by place
Not every memorable restaurant is a one-off landmark. McDonald’s Hong Kong describes several design concepts—Ray, Essential Ingredients, Geometry and Playground—that create distinctive interiors. Its Geometry concept uses geometric illustration, concrete panels, light wood and red-orange accents; Essential Ingredients draws on playful pop art (McDonald’s Hong Kong’s restaurant design concepts).
Designer Landini Associates says Project Ray first launched in 2015 at Admiralty Station in Hong Kong and has since rolled out internationally. Its portfolio lists projects including Times Square, Oxford Street, Budapest’s Nyugati Station, Sydney airport, Tianjin and Chicago (Landini Associates’ McDonald’s project portfolio). These design systems help explain why some restaurants feel deliberately different without being luxury restaurants.
Other notable McDonald’s architecture
Several frequently mentioned locations are not part of this 21-place selection. McDonald’s has described its Times Square flagship as a three-story glass-fronted building designed by Landini Associates, with views into Times Square, digital kiosks, table service and mobile ordering. In a 2019 company account, it reported the building at 11,199 square feet, the billboard at 9,280 square feet, 18 digital kiosks and 173 seats; these are the company’s reported figures for that location at that time (McDonald’s’ account of iconic locations).
The company reported that its Chicago flagship measured 19,000 square feet in 2018. It received LEED Platinum certification in 2021, which McDonald’s described as the first such certification for a U.S. McDonald’s and the second worldwide. The company framed the site as a learning hub for sustainable building solutions (McDonald’s’ account of iconic locations).
Other architectural standouts noted by Architectural Digest include Batumi’s glass dome, Debrecen, Downey, New Hyde Park and Wisconsin Dells, alongside several locations covered above (Architectural Digest’s architectural list). Smithsonian Magazine’s 2015 feature also described a former bank in Kristiansand, a Piazza di Spagna location in Rome and a themed Dallas restaurant; its age means those descriptions are not current travel guidance (Smithsonian Magazine’s 2015 feature).
Quick Recap
Check before you make a special trip
- Look up the restaurant in McDonald’s’ local site or app for current status, address and hours.
- Confirm access to the feature that interests you. A terrace, aircraft cabin, themed play space or ski-through service may have changed or may be subject to local operating conditions.
- Separate the building’s appeal from the meal: these are still McDonald’s restaurants, and the list does not claim fine dining or luxury service.
