Bernama and the Hainan International Media Center (HIMC) presented their 30-minute documentary, 2026: Towards the Hainan Free Trade Port, in Kuala Lumpur on 27 August 2026. The film introduces Hainan’s Free Trade Port and explores its links with ASEAN; its message encouraging businesses to establish a presence in Hainan is a documentary framing, not a finding that the location suits any particular company.
What the documentary covers
HIMC says it commissioned the film and that a Bernama team filmed it during a visit to Hainan in July 2026. Bernama describes the Kuala Lumpur event as a launch, while HIMC calls it a premiere. Both reports give the date as 27 August 2026.
The documentary visits or discusses Yangpu Port, Sanya’s international yacht industry, the Boao Lecheng medical tourism pilot zone, and enterprises. The coverage also raises themes including supply chains, digital trade, investment, tourism, education, medical tourism, and cultural ties between Hainan and ASEAN. These are topics the film explores, not guaranteed commercial opportunities.
How to watch
Bernama reported availability through Bernama TV and its digital channels, while HIMC said the film would be available on its platforms. Astro also has a programme listing. Broadcast schedules and online access can change, so check the respective outlets for current availability.

What the reports say about Hainan’s business framework
The documentary’s business context includes Hainan’s island-wide special customs operations. HIMC describes the arrangement as “opening at the first line” and “efficient control at the second line”: foreign goods entering Hainan may receive zero- or low-tariff treatment, while goods moving from Hainan to mainland China are subject to standard import regulations. HIMC also reports that goods processed in Hainan and meeting a 30 percent added-value threshold may qualify for tariff exemption when entering mainland China. These are media summaries, not a complete statement of the applicable rules; the reporting does not establish all eligibility conditions.
In a 16 August 2026 preview, Bernama reported three Yangpu shipping routes connecting with Malaysia, with direct calls at Port Klang and Pasir Gudang. It also reported a 15 percent income-tax rate for eligible businesses and individuals. Neither figure establishes that a particular company, person, shipment, or route qualifies or is currently available on suitable terms. Route schedules can change, and tax treatment depends on eligibility and current rules.

What ASEAN businesses should take from the film
The documentary presents Hainan as a possible China–ASEAN trade and investment hub and introduces examples spanning ports, processing, tourism, medical tourism, and education. It can help viewers understand the subjects being discussed, but it is not a market-entry assessment or a substitute for checking the conditions that apply to a specific operation.

Bernama and HIMC’s collaboration
Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai described the media partnership as joint production rather than only an exchange of information and content: “Most media groups, they have the exchange of information and content exchange, but in our case, both of us have gone a step further. We are producing programs jointly, so that’s a very meaningful and very productive venture.” His remarks concern the collaboration between the media organizations, not an independent assessment of Hainan’s business environment.
