The 2025 Oscar nominations announcement was moved to Thursday, January 23, at 5:30 a.m. Pacific Time because of the Los Angeles-area fires. The Academy also extended nominations voting through January 17. The ceremony itself was not postponed: the 97th Oscars remained scheduled for Sunday, March 2, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
When were the 2025 Oscar nominations announced?
The Academy’s original calendar, published April 10, 2024, listed Friday, January 17, 2025, for the nominations announcement. On January 13, 2025, the Academy rescheduled it for Thursday, January 23, at 5:30 a.m. Pacific Time, and extended the voting period through Friday, January 17, at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. The original 97th Oscars calendar and the Academy’s schedule update document those dates.
The Academy said the revised announcement would be virtual, without in-person media coverage. The title’s reference to a second move should not be taken as a documented intermediate date: the official pages cited here establish the original January 17 date and the January 13 announcement of January 23, but not the date of any earlier change.
Why did the Academy change the schedule?
The Academy attributed the change to still-active fires in the Los Angeles area. In a joint statement, CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said: “Due to the still-active fires in the Los Angeles area, we feel it is necessary to extend our voting period and move the date of our nominations announcement to allow additional time for our members.”
