Tom Cruise received an Academy Honorary Award at the 2025 Governors Awards, while Dolly Parton received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Cruise’s statuette was an honorary Oscar, not a win in a competitive category. Debbie Allen and Wynn Thomas also received Academy Honorary Awards at the ceremony.

The Academy announced the recipients and ceremony details in its June 17, 2025 announcement; its Governors Awards archive identifies the event as the 16th ceremony.
Was Tom Cruise’s award a competitive Oscar?
No. Cruise received an honorary statuette, not an Oscar for winning a competitive category. Before the ceremony, he had four competitive Oscar nominations: acting nominations for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia, plus a Best Picture nomination as a producer of Top Gun: Maverick. The honorary statuette was his first Oscar statuette, according to the Associated Press ceremony report.

At the ceremony, Cruise said, “Making movies is not what I do, it’s who I am,” and described how “In that theater we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together.”
How do the Honorary Award and Jean Hersholt award differ?
They are distinct Academy awards with different criteria. An Academy Honorary Award recognizes career achievement, contributions to motion-picture arts and sciences, or service to the Academy. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award recognizes humanitarian efforts in the motion-picture arts and sciences that promote human welfare and help rectify inequities.

| Award | What it recognizes | 2025 recipient(s) |
|---|---|---|
| Academy Honorary Award | “Extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences in any discipline, or for outstanding service to the Academy.” | Debbie Allen, Tom Cruise and Wynn Thomas |
| Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award | Humanitarian efforts in motion-picture arts and sciences that promote human welfare and contribute to rectifying inequities. | Dolly Parton |
These definitions come from the Academy’s announcement of the 2025 honorees. The Governors Awards honor recipients outside the annual competitive Oscar categories.
Why did Dolly Parton receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award?
The award recognized Parton’s decades of charitable work, particularly her support for literacy and education through the Imagination Library. The Academy’s June 2025 announcement said the program had provided 285 million books. Vanity Fair’s November 17, 2025 report later described the total as more than 300 million books. These are figures reported at different times, not a current 2026 count.
