The 2024 Country Music Hall of Fame class was John Anderson, guitarist James Burton, and Toby Keith. Anderson entered in the Veterans Era Artist category, Burton as a Recording and/or Touring Musician, and Keith as a Modern Era Artist. The Country Music Association announced the class on March 14, 2024; the three were formally inducted on October 20.
Who was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024?
All three inductees became members at the October 20, 2024, ceremony, in this order: John Anderson was the 153rd member, James Burton the 154th, and Toby Keith the 155th. The museum’s induction announcement records the class and membership sequence.
| Inductee | Hall category | Musical role or association |
|---|---|---|
| John Anderson | Veterans Era Artist | Traditionalist country singer known for a distinctive breathy voice and note-bending delivery |
| James Burton | Recording and/or Touring Musician | Guitarist |
| Toby Keith | Modern Era Artist | Singer-songwriter with a brash persona and commanding baritone |
The categories distinguish different kinds and eras of contribution; they are not a ranking. The musician category rotates every third year with the Songwriter and Non-Performer categories, according to the CMA’s class announcement.
Why John Anderson was inducted
The Hall describes Anderson as a force for traditionalism, combining honky-tonk sensibility with a breathy voice and expressive bends in his notes. From 1981 through 1995, he had 20 Top 10 country singles and five No. 1 hits, according to the museum’s 2024 induction release.

Among his best-known recordings are “Wild and Blue,” “Seminole Wind,” and “Swingin’.” In 1983, Anderson won the CMA Horizon Award and Single of the Year for “Swingin’.” His election recognized a career associated with traditional country at a time when the genre continued to change.
Why Toby Keith was inducted
Keith’s Hall biography describes a commanding baritone, brash public persona, and clever songwriting. Songs including “How Do You Like Me Now?!” and “I Wanna Talk About Me” illustrate the direct, contemporary style associated with his Modern Era Artist category.

Keith was born July 8, 1961, in Clinton, Oklahoma, and died February 5, 2024, according to the Hall’s biography. His induction followed a ballot that had closed before his death—not a vote taken afterward. The biography says voting concluded three days before February 5. The CMA’s announcement states that the final ballot closed Friday, February 2, 2024, and that Deloitte tabulates the balloting.
How the Hall selects inductees
The museum says an anonymous panel of voters chosen by the CMA elects new Hall members annually. The 2024 process concluded before Keith’s death, so his posthumous induction does not mean voters knew the outcome after his passing or that the result was decided at the ceremony. The CMA described its nominees as exemplifying “the excellence of our genre,” in a statement from Chief Executive Officer Sarah Trahern.

The official recap also documents musical tributes and speakers.
Anderson described the Hall as “an institution that preserves greatness” and reflected on joining artists he admired, including Ernest Tubb, Minnie Pearl, Loretta Lynn, Porter Wagoner, George Jones, and Merle Haggard.
