Hosted by Kelsea Ballerini at Austin’s Moody Center on April 7, the ceremony balanced quick-moving country performances with a memorial moment that AP described as the evening’s emotional center.
What defined the 2024 CMT Music Awards?
The ceremony’s strongest thread was its Texas setting. Texas native Cody Johnson opened the broadcast with “That’s Texas,” making the location part of the performance rather than just a backdrop. Later, Jason Aldean performed outdoors in front of the University of Texas at Austin, extending the show beyond the Moody Center.
The night also moved briskly between award presentations and live music. Performances ranged from current country hits to a Phil Collins cover, while the Toby Keith tribute shifted the tone toward remembrance.
Who won the 2024 CMT Music Awards?

Jelly Roll’s wins connected the ceremony’s headline video award to a performance recognition for an earlier CMT show. In his acceptance remarks, AP reported that he said, “I’m having one of the best nights of my life,” and, “I love you, Texas.”
What did Jason Aldean sing, and where?
Aldean performed “Let Your Boys Be Country” outdoors in front of the University of Texas at Austin, according to AP and MusicRow. He did not perform “Try That in a Small Town” at this ceremony. AP noted that CMT had removed the latter song’s video the previous year after an outcry about its setting and lyrics; that context concerns a different song from the one Aldean sang in Austin.

How did the Toby Keith tribute honor him?
The tribute brought Brooks & Dunn, Lainey Wilson and Sammy Hagar together with Keith’s longtime band. In the aired segment, Brooks & Dunn performed “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” Hagar sang “I Love This Bar,” and Wilson covered “How Do You Like Me Now,” AP reported. The pre-event CMT/Paramount announcement also named special appearances by Lukas Nelson and Roger Clemens.
The scale of Keith’s career helps explain the weight of the tribute. CMT/Paramount’s 2024 announcement credited him with more than 40 million albums sold worldwide, 61 singles on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, 32 No. 1 hits and 42 additional songs that reached the top 10. The same announcement cited 30 CMT Music Awards nominations, seven wins and 13 performances, including appearances in 10 consecutive years. It also said Keith received the National Medal of Arts in 2021 and was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024.

What else happened onstage?
The performances made the evening feel like a rapid tour through contemporary country, with a few unexpected pairings. MusicRow’s recap lists Megan Moroney performing “No Caller ID” after the opening and Aldean segment; Parker McCollum joined Brittney Spencer for “Burn It Down”; Lainey Wilson sang “Country’s Cool Again”; Bailey Zimmerman performed “Where It Ends”; Keith Urban played “Straight Line”; and Sugarland joined Little Big Town for Phil Collins’ “Take Me Home.”
AP also reported that NEEDTOBREATHE and Jordan Davis performed one another’s songs, “Brother” and “Next Thing You Know.” These highlights are not a complete set list, but they show how the broadcast alternated individual performances, collaborations and the more reflective Keith tribute.

Why did Trisha Yearwood receive the June Carter Cash Humanitarian Award?
Yearwood received the inaugural June Carter Cash Humanitarian Award. Reflecting on the honor, she told MusicRow, “My hope is that we all can learn a little big from June Carter Cash’s legacy and be a little bit more real, a little bit more vulnerable, be a little bit less about me and more about us… I look at this as a challenge and a calling to be better.”
Where were the awards held, and how were they originally broadcast?
The ceremony took place at Austin’s Moody Center on Sunday, April 7, 2024, with Kelsea Ballerini as host. Before the event, CMT/Paramount announced plans for a live CBS broadcast and live and on-demand availability on Paramount+ in 2024. That announcement describes the original distribution plan, not whether the historical broadcast is currently available to stream.
