Here are standout looks from the night, with “best” and “worst” used as editorial judgments—not an official ranking. For the photographs and their original captions, visit the linked galleries.
Best looks: color, shape and detail that made an impression
Jenna Ortega: a fluid Gucci look
Editorial pick: Ortega’s look stands out for the contrast between its cutouts and flowing train. The official Golden Globes fashion recap identifies the design as Gucci and notes those details; ABC News describes it as bronze-toned and mentions Tiffany & Co. jewels. The descriptions emphasize different aspects of the outfit, so both are attributed rather than collapsed into one definitive account. See the official Golden Globes gallery and ABC News’ red-carpet coverage.
Michelle Yeoh: sequins with structure
Editorial pick: Yeoh’s sequined Armani look balances surface sparkle with a peplum silhouette, giving the outfit more shape than a simple column of embellishment. Vogue describes the style as Armani; ABC News attributes her custom look to Armani Privé. View Vogue’s 2023 best-dressed gallery.
Lily James: a vivid red Versace gown
Editorial pick: Red makes the gown immediately legible on a crowded carpet, while the custom-design attribution adds useful context. The official recap calls it a red Versace gown; ABC News identifies it as custom Atelier Versace. See the official recap or ABC News’ photo coverage.
#1 Best Overall
Julia Garner: pink, tiers and texture
Editorial pick: Garner’s pink Gucci gown earns its place here for its clear silhouette and layered construction. Vogue identifies the design as Gucci and describes it as pink; ABC News calls it triple-tiered and notes De Beers jewels. See Vogue’s gallery.
Margot Robbie: custom Chanel in pink
Editorial pick: Robbie’s custom pink Chanel halter dress is a strong example of the evening’s color story without relying on sequins or dramatic tailoring to stand out. ABC News identifies the dress as custom Chanel. See ABC News’ red-carpet gallery.

Worst looks: an explicitly subjective call
There was no official worst-dressed list, and the available coverage does not establish a shared consensus. On the details documented here, Eddie Redmayne’s black-and-brown Valentino tailoring with a large silk rosette is the most divisive choice: the rosette gives a conventional suit a memorable focal point, but it may feel oversized beside the clean lines of the tailoring. That is a judgment about the styling’s balance, not a claim that the look was objectively the night’s worst. The AP gallery also captures Andrew Garfield in orange and Heidi Klum in silver feathers—high-impact choices that will depend on a viewer’s taste more than any neutral ranking. See the Associated Press gallery.
What the carpet looked like
The carpet itself was gray, and the Associated Press described it as wet after heavy rain in Southern California. In the official recap published January 11, 2023, Margaret Gardiner wrote: “Jewel tones, pink and sparkly black dominated for women, while men too ventured into color. Velvet trended in tuxes, and grey was the watchword of the night.” Those are the recap author’s observations, not the results of a quantified survey. AP’s coverage adds silver, black tailoring, colorful suits and statement details such as oversized lapel rosettes to the picture.

Silver was another visible thread. British Vogue’s Alice Newbold quoted Beyoncé stylist KJ Moody: “Silver, according to Beyoncé’s stylist KJ Moody, ‘symbolises a modern aesthetic and is a great agenda-setter’.” That is Moody’s attributed view, not an explanation for every silver look on the carpet.
