Speed Racer began as a Japanese manga called Mach GoGoGo, then became a 1960s television anime before inspiring a separate 1997 remake and a 2008 feature film. Here are 20 documented details about the franchise, with the versions kept distinct.
Origins: manga, anime and the name
1. Speed Racer started as Mach GoGoGo
Tatsunoko Production says the property was created for Japanese television in 1967 as Mach GoGoGo, then localized internationally as Speed Racer. The title most viewers know is therefore the international name of a Japanese series.
2. The manga came first
The character appeared in the Mach GoGoGo manga in summer 1966, before the television anime debuted the following year, according to the Yale Film Archive’s 2019 program notes. The franchise’s first appearance was on the printed page, not on television.
3. The original anime ran from 1967 to 1968
Tatsunoko’s Japanese series record dates the original broadcast from April 1967 through March 1968. Its English series page lists 52 episodes, each 30 minutes long. Those figures describe the original television series, not the later remake or film. Tatsunoko’s English series page and Japanese series record give the format and dates.

4. The creator was Tatsuo Yoshida
The Yale Film Archive’s notes identify the 2008 feature as based on the series by Tatsuo Yoshida. The series itself was produced by Tatsunoko, the Japanese animation company that continues to list the original and the 1997 remake in its catalog.
5. Its creators openly embraced American influence
Yale’s 2019 notes attribute this remark to Toyoharu Yoshida, Tatsuo’s brother and creative partner: “Toyoharu said the series ‘was based strictly on our all-out adoration of America.’” That perspective helps explain why a Japanese creation became so closely associated with American audiences and imagery.
The Mach 5 and the Mifune family
6. Speed’s Japanese name is Go Mifune
Tatsunoko’s synopsis identifies the driver as Go Mifune. In the international version, he is known as Speed Racer; Mifune is the family name used in the Japanese version.

7. The “M” connects the car to the Mifune name
The Yale Film Archive says the hood’s “M” is a tribute to actor Toshiro Mifune. In Japanese versions, it is also the Mifune Motors emblem, reflecting Speed’s family name. The two explanations are related, but the source does not reduce the emblem to only one meaning.

Tatsunoko’s official synopsis says Go drives a Mach equipped with seven secret devices; the Japanese page describes seven special functions. The number is part of the car’s defining setup, rather than a count invented for a later adaptation.
9. The car’s gadget premise belongs to the original story concept
Tatsunoko’s description ties the seven devices directly to Go’s Mach. It establishes the gadget-equipped car as a core feature of the series, although the cited official synopsis does not enumerate or describe all seven devices.

Three versions, not one continuous series
11. The 1997 anime is a separate remake
Tatsunoko lists a distinct Mach GoGoGo series from 1997, with 34 episodes broadcast from January through September of that year. It is a remake, not an extension of the original 52-episode run. Tatsunoko’s 1997 series record provides those details.
12. The 2008 version is a feature film
The 2008 Speed Racer is a feature directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, according to the Yale Film Archive’s 2019 notes. Those notes describe it as based on Tatsuo Yoshida’s series, making it an adaptation rather than another television season.

|---|---|---|
| Original Mach GoGoGo | Television anime; Japan, April 1967–March 1968 | 52 episodes, 30 minutes each (Tatsunoko’s official series pages) |

| 2008 Speed Racer | Feature film | Directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski; episode count not applicable (Yale Film Archive, 2019) |
14. The 1997 title retains the Japanese name
Tatsunoko’s record names the remake Mach GoGoGo, while the original was later localized internationally as Speed Racer. The naming distinction helps avoid treating every version as if it had the same title in every market.
15. A broadcast announcement is not a streaming catalog
On August 5, 2026, Tatsunoko announced that Disney Channel Japan was scheduled to begin broadcasting the original series on August 7, with weekday slots from 24:00 to 26:00. That announcement documents a dated schedule in Japan; it does not establish availability after that schedule or in other countries. Read Tatsunoko’s broadcast announcement.

16. The original series is a 52-episode work, not a universal count for every release
Tatsunoko’s official English page lists 52 episodes for the original. That is the rights-holder’s series count; the cited material does not compare every international edit, dub, or home-video release.

17. The archive’s film figures are institutional estimates
Yale Film Archive’s 2019 notes report a production budget of $120 million, marketing support of $80 million, and worldwide gross of less than $94 million for the 2008 film. These are figures attributed to Yale’s notes, not independently audited figures in the cited sources.
18. The original title’s international localization is documented, but every dub history is not
Tatsunoko records the international localization as Speed Racer. The cited pages do not provide a complete chronology of every territory’s release, dub, edit, or alternate title, so the localization statement should not be stretched into a universal account of distribution.
19. The 2026 schedule is specifically Japanese
Tatsunoko’s August 5 announcement names Disney Channel Japan and gives weekday overnight slots. It is evidence of a scheduled Japanese broadcast at that time, not a claim that the show is currently streaming or available internationally.
20. Its history spans print, television and film
The documented sequence runs from the Mach GoGoGo manga in 1966, to the original anime in 1967–68, to a television remake in 1997 and a feature-film adaptation in 2008. Each is a distinct work with its own medium and release date, rather than a single unbroken series.
