Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of Bucky Barnes is shaped by more than the character’s comic-book history. Stan’s own childhood moves and theater training informed his path to acting, while his preparation for the role drew on comics, historical material and physical performance. Here are 20 facts that connect the actor’s career with Bucky’s evolution on screen—without confusing Stan’s biography with his character’s fictional past.

Stan’s early life and path to acting

  1. He was born in Romania

Stan was born in Romania. He later moved with his mother to Vienna, and eventually they settled in the United States. Nylon’s 2015 profile and a 2025 Vanity Fair profile discuss his background.

  2. Frequent moves made childhood complicated

Stan has described moving often and changing schools as difficult. With time, he has also recognized that those experiences gave him a broader perspective. He discussed the moves in Nylon in 2015.

  3. Acting offered a chance to become someone else

As he adapted to a new language and culture, acting let Stan experiment with inhabiting other people. He has described transformation as part of what drew him to the work. Vanity Fair explored that perspective in 2025.

  4. His mother encouraged him to audition

Stan’s mother urged him to audition when he was young. He recalled landing a part in a film by director Michael Haneke as a boy. Nylon’s 2015 interview recounts the early audition.

  5. A school play made acting feel serious

A high-school production of Cyrano de Bergerac helped turn performance from an interest into a serious pursuit. Stan has connected the experience to his decision to keep acting. Nylon and Vanity Fair offer context on his early acting years.

  6. Marvel was not his first major screen work

Before joining the Marvel films, Stan appeared in projects including the television series Gossip Girl and the film Black Swan. Nylon’s 2015 profile surveys his career at that point.

How Stan prepared to play Bucky Barnes

  1. He first played Bucky in Captain America: The First Avenger

Stan made his debut as Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), then returned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In a 2014 CineMovie interview, Stan discussed the role and its return.

  2. Bucky’s return was left uncertain at casting

Stan said Marvel did not definitively tell him at the time of casting that Bucky would come back. The possibility was presented as a “maybe,” rather than a firm promise. He described the uncertainty to CineMovie in 2014.

  3. He did not grow up reading comics

Stan has said he was not a comics reader as a child and first discovered comics around 2009 while preparing for the role. That made the source material a new part of his research, not a lifelong familiarity. CineMovie’s 2014 interview covers how he approached it.

  4. He turned to Bucky’s comics for the character’s history

Once cast, Stan repeatedly consulted the comics to understand Bucky’s origins and different stories. They gave him background for a character whose screen identity changes dramatically across the films. Stan discussed using the comics with CineMovie.

  5. His research extended beyond comics

To prepare for the Winter Soldier, Stan read about the effects of war on individuals and watched military, Cold War, spy and historical documentaries. Those subjects helped him consider the world and experiences behind the character’s transformation. His preparation was described in the CineMovie interview.

What made the Winter Soldier performance distinctive

  1. Silence put the emphasis on his eyes

The Winter Soldier has relatively little dialogue, so Stan relied heavily on expression and physical presence. “I was super-aware of having just eyes to work with, but it made the job more interesting,” he told CineMovie on March 18, 2014. Read the interview.

Then it?s Sam Wilson who unleashes his wings and takes up the mantle in Captain America: Brave New World. Join them as they fight evil global forces with this action-packed 4-movie set.
  2. He did much of the fight work he was allowed to do

Stan said he performed as much of the fight work as he was permitted to, working alongside the stunt department. The qualification matters: the action was a collaboration, not a claim that he performed every stunt himself. He explained the arrangement to CineMovie.

  3. The metal arm gave him something physical to play

Stan liked having a tangible arm prop rather than relying only on a CGI effect. The physical object could inform how he moved and carried the character. He discussed the prop with CineMovie in 2014.

  4. The arm changed as the films continued

The early arm prop was rigid and cumbersome; later versions became more mobile. In a 2019 interview, Stan also recalled that he had grown too big for the Civil War arm, which became tight enough to affect his circulation. Men’s Health reported his account of the prop.

  5. The mask took testing to get comfortable

Stan said the Winter Soldier mask went through multiple tests, and that the version he wore at the end was the most comfortable. It was one practical detail in a role that depended on restricted expression as well as action. He told CineMovie in 2014.

How Bucky’s story and voice developed

  1. Bucky’s fictional journey is not Stan’s biography

In the Marvel story, Bucky begins as Steve Rogers’s friend and a soldier, becomes a conditioned assassin, and later struggles to recover and live with his past. This is the character’s fictional arc—not a description of Stan’s life. Vanity Fair’s 2025 profile discusses the broad trajectory.

  2. Stan and Anthony Mackie wondered what came after Endgame

Stan said he and Mackie wondered where their characters would go after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier gave that next chapter room to develop their partnership and separate identities. Stan discussed the question with British GQ in 2021.

  3. The series gave Bucky more dialogue—and Stan a new task

Compared with the largely silent Winter Soldier, Bucky in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has more to say. Stan described the challenge as finding the character’s voice: “For this show I had to find his voice, in all senses, and do it in a way that was timely to what is going on in 2021.” British GQ published the interview on March 19, 2021.

  4. The series connected superhero questions to real debates

Stan said the show’s treatment of race, identity and patriotism connected with events and debates beyond the Marvel story. That gave Bucky’s personal adjustment a place within a broader conversation about who gets to represent a nation and what its symbols mean. He spoke about those themes with British GQ in 2021.
