The images below are famous, disputed cases—not scientifically authenticated proof of ghosts. An old photograph can be a genuine historical object while its supernatural interpretation remains unverified.
How to read the cases
The strongest cases have a traceable photographer, date, location, or publication history. Those details help establish what an image is and how it became famous; they do not establish that the figure is a ghost. Long exposures, movement, reflections, double exposure, compositing, unnoticed people, and deliberate deception are among the possible photographic explanations. The available accounts do not settle every image’s origin.
The best-documented and most influential photographs
1. The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall (1936)
In a photograph made at Raynham Hall in Norfolk, England, a pale, veiled figure appears to descend the staircase. Country Life photographers Captain Hubert C. Provand and Indre Shira reported seeing the form while making the photograph; it became visible when the plate was developed. That account is part of the case’s history, not independent proof of what caused the shape. The image was later identified with Lady Dorothy Townshend, but that identification is unsupported. 2. Lord Combermere’s library (1891)
Sybell Corbett took a long-exposure photograph in the library at Combermere Abbey in Cheshire around the time of Lord Combermere’s funeral. A seated figure appears in the image and was said to resemble him. The timing and resemblance helped turn the photograph into a celebrated ghost story, but they do not show that the figure was supernatural. Period discussion included the possibility that a person entered the room and remained still, as well as exposure effects and other photographic explanations. 3. Freddy Jackson’s squadron photograph (1919)
This Royal Air Force group photograph is repeatedly described in paranormal literature as containing an extra face associated with airman Freddy Jackson, who had died shortly before the photograph was made. The story is an allegation preserved in later accounts, not an authenticated supernatural event. Reproductions and retellings have helped keep the image in circulation, but the material here does not establish the original negative’s history or rule out ordinary photographic causes. 4. The Tulip Staircase at the Queen’s House (1966)
Reverend R. W. Hardy photographed the elegant spiral Tulip Staircase at the Queen’s House in Greenwich. The image appears to show a figure on the stairs, and Royal Museums Greenwich preserves both the photograph and its investigation story as part of the site’s visitor appeal. That museum context documents the photograph’s cultural life; it is not a finding that the figure is a ghost. Royal Museums Greenwich.

5. Mary Todd Lincoln and William H. Mumler’s spirit photography (1860s)
In one of the era’s most famous spirit photographs, Mary Todd Lincoln sits for a portrait with an apparent image of Abraham Lincoln behind her. Photographer William H. Mumler became known for pictures that seemed to show spirits alongside the living. The image belongs to a broader history in which grief, celebrity, spiritualist belief, and photographic techniques became intertwined. 6. The Newby Church monk
A photograph associated with Newby Church in Yorkshire appears to show a tall, hooded figure identified in popular retellings as a monk. It is widely discussed in comparisons of famous ghost photographs, but its provenance and technical explanation remain contested. Without firmer archival documentation, claims about precisely how or when it was made—or that it depicts a ghost—should be treated cautiously. Comparative history.

Other famous cases: reported, not established here
The following images are familiar from ghost-photography lists and paranormal histories, but the available documentation does not support confident claims about their exact dates, photographers, original negatives, or explanations. Each is best treated as a reported case pending verification against an original archive, museum, or similarly strong source.
- Cottingley Fairies: photographs of apparent fairies that became a major part of the cultural history of belief in supernatural photography.
- Mabel Chinnery’s back-seat photograph: a reported image in which a figure seems to appear behind Chinnery in a car.
- Brown Lady variants: other images and reproductions associated with the Raynham Hall story; they should not be conflated with the better-known 1936 photograph.
- SS Watertown faces: reported faces appearing in photographs of the sea after two crew members died.
- Wem Town Hall fire photograph: a reported figure in a photograph of a burning building.
- Bachelor’s Grove cemetery figure and Madonna of Bachelor’s Grove: related reported cemetery images that circulate under differing descriptions.
- Stanley Hotel staircase image: a reported figure on a hotel staircase.
- Hampton Court ghost figure: a reported apparition associated with the palace.
- White Lady of Worstead: a reported ghost image connected with a church in Norfolk.
- Amityville house photographs: images said to show a figure in the house, circulated in connection with the Amityville story.
- Ghost of the Black Monk: a reported figure associated with a haunting story.
- Cooper family falling-body image: a reported photograph showing a figure apparently suspended or falling into a family scene.
- Queensland railway ghost: a reported figure associated with a railway photograph.
- Ghost of Freddy Jackson reproductions: later copies and retellings of the squadron image, not separate proof of its interpretation.
- Faces in the sea: a 1924 claim recorded in paranormal literature, but not established as a supernatural photograph. Psi Encyclopedia account.
What makes a ghost photograph convincing?
A striking image can make a strong impression without resolving how it was made. To assess a case, separate the photograph’s history from the explanation attached to it.

- Provenance: Is the photographer named? Is the date and location documented? Can the original plate, negative, or earliest print be traced?
- Capture conditions: What were the exposure time, lighting, camera position, and witness accounts? Was the scene controlled, or could someone have entered the frame?
- Contemporary examination: Did anyone inspect the original negative, plate, camera, or darkroom process, rather than relying on a later reproduction?
- Alternative causes: Could movement during a long exposure, a reflection, double exposure, compositing, an overlooked person, or intentional staging account for the shape?
- Reception: Was the image published, debated, displayed by a museum, or repeatedly reproduced? Cultural influence explains why it is famous, not whether it is paranormal.
These questions are especially important when a photograph is known mainly through copies or a story retold long after its supposed capture. A clear chain of custody can help establish that an image has not been altered since it was made; it still cannot, on its own, establish that a ghost caused what appears in it.

No case covered here is verified as proof of a ghost. A photograph records light on a sensor or photographic material; identifying a strange shape as a spirit requires evidence beyond the image itself. The Brown Lady, Combermere, and Tulip Staircase photographs have histories that can be discussed, but their paranormal interpretations remain unproven. That distinction leaves room to appreciate their visual mystery and historical importance without presenting an allegation as a scientific finding.

For historical context
Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Case for Spirit Photography (1922) is a period defense of spirit-photography claims. It is useful for understanding how some contemporaries argued for the phenomenon, not as modern scientific verification. Bibliographic reference.
