These are 20 of the greatest theatrical animated features produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, ranked by storytelling and emotional impact, visual craft, music, lasting characters and influence on the studio. The order is an editorial judgment, not a definitive consensus: “Disney animated movies” can also mean Pixar films and other Disney releases, but this list does not include them.
What counts as a Disney animated movie?
This ranking covers theatrical feature films produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, including package and anthology features. It excludes Pixar, direct-to-video titles, theatrical films made by Disney Television Animation, and films produced by other studios but distributed or branded by Disney. That boundary matters: D23’s “Disney Classics” list has its own exclusions, while Rotten Tomatoes also defines its Disney-animation rankings around theatrical, fully animated films and excludes Pixar. Disney+’s selected watch guide includes Pixar, so it is a discovery list rather than a studio-only canon.
Walt Disney Animation Studios identifies Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as its first fully animated feature, released in 1937. Its filmography spans storybook adaptations, formal experiments, hand-drawn and computer animation, and newer releases. The ranking below weighs story and emotional force most heavily, while also considering visual invention, music, cultural staying power and influence across eras. The studio’s filmography is the reference for titles and release years.
20 greatest Disney animated movies, ranked
20. The Rescuers (1977)
The Rescuers earns its place through an unusual, subdued atmosphere and the appealing partnership of its two mouse heroes. Its smaller scale and less immediately memorable musical identity leave it below the studio’s most enduring peaks, but its tone gives the film a distinct place in the catalog.

19. The Emperor’s New Groove (2000)
This comedy stands out for its rapid-fire timing and knowingly ridiculous central performance. Its deliberately loose, joke-driven storytelling is a different kind of achievement from Disney’s sweeping musical dramas; the gags and character chemistry are its lasting strengths.
18. The Princess and the Frog (2009)
A return to hand-drawn animation gives this New Orleans-set musical a warm, tactile look, while its songs and heroine anchor the story. It ranks lower because its familiar fairy-tale framework does not always match the freshness of its setting and visual style.
17. Hercules (1997)
Hercules turns Greek myth into a bright, pop-inflected comedy, with the Muses and Hades providing much of its energy. Its loose approach to mythology is part of the fun, though the episodic feel makes it less cohesive than the strongest entries here.
16. The Aristocats (1970)
This relaxed, music-filled adventure has an easygoing charm and a memorable jazz sensibility. Its appeal lies more in atmosphere and character than in a tightly driven plot, which keeps it from climbing higher.

15. Zootopia (2016)
Zootopia pairs a lively buddy-mystery with a carefully constructed animal city, using the setting to explore prejudice and social assumptions. The world-building and central partnership are substantial strengths; its topical allegory can be more direct than subtle.
Rank #2
14. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
Few Disney features aim for such a grand, emotionally intense register. Its striking architecture, choral score and serious themes distinguish it, though the shifts between solemn drama and broad comic relief can pull in opposite directions.
13. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)
As a package feature assembled from Pooh stories, this film belongs in a ranking that includes theatrical anthology forms. Its gentle pace, hand-drawn softness and affectionate humor make it unusually comforting; that episodic structure is also less propulsive than a single sustained narrative.
12. The Jungle Book (1967)
The film’s loose, musical storytelling gives it an effortless swing, and its character designs remain instantly recognizable. It is less tightly plotted than the films above it, but its songs and personality helped define a durable Disney-adventure style.

Tangled combines expressive computer animation with a lively romantic adventure and a well-matched central duo. Its visual warmth and comic momentum make it a strong modern-era entry, even if its fairy-tale beats are more familiar than surprising.
10. The Little Mermaid (1989)
With memorable songs, a clear emotional center and a vivid underwater world, The Little Mermaid made a defining statement for a new period in Disney animation. TIME’s 2011 all-time animated-film list placed it at number 10, one critical perspective rather than a universal verdict. Its familiar romance framework is less distinctive than its music and animation.
Rank #3
9. Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Its angular, richly composed art direction makes the film feel like an illuminated storybook brought to life. The visual design and score are exceptional; the comparatively spare characterization means its beauty can outshine its emotional complexity.
8. Moana (2016)
Moana brings a confident heroine, a strong sense of place and a song-driven adventure together with fluid computer animation. Its strongest scenes connect personal choice with community and tradition; the comic detours occasionally interrupt that emotional current.
7. Bambi (1942)
Among Disney’s early features, Bambi remains remarkable for its observational approach to nature and its patient visual storytelling. Its emotional force comes from the seasons and the vulnerability of its young characters, though its quiet, episodic form may feel less conventional than a plot-heavy adventure.
6. Aladdin (1992)
Fast comedy, charismatic characters and an exceptionally energetic musical performance make Aladdin one of the studio’s most entertaining films. The Genie’s larger-than-life presence is a major asset, while the romance and adventure around him are more conventional.
5. Dumbo (1941)
Short, direct and emotionally concentrated, Dumbo makes its central character’s vulnerability matter without overcomplicating the story. Its visual imagination and emotional clarity are powerful; its brevity and simpler structure make it a different achievement from the epic features above it.
4. The Lion King (1994)
The Lion King joins a sweeping coming-of-age story to memorable songs, bold landscapes and enduring characters. Its scale and emotional directness make it one of Disney’s most complete crowd-pleasers, though its mythic structure is less formally adventurous than the top three.
3. Fantasia (1940)
Rather than build around one continuous plot, Fantasia makes animation respond to classical music through a series of visual interpretations. Its ambition and variety remain singular in the studio’s theatrical catalog. The anthology form means that its impact depends on how strongly each segment works for an individual viewer.
2. Pinocchio (1940)
Pinocchio combines a richly imagined world with a story about temptation, responsibility and becoming worthy of trust. Its craft and emotional stakes have endured, and Rotten Tomatoes places it first on its Disney animated-movie ranking using review-status ordering. That position reflects the site’s method, not an objective measure of greatness.
1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
The first fully animated feature from Walt Disney Animation Studios remains a landmark not simply because it came first, but because its visual storytelling, character work and emotional clarity made the form feel expansive. Its place at the top recognizes both its achievement and its continuing watchability. Some elements reflect the conventions of its era, but its foundational influence is inseparable from its artistic accomplishment.

For a snapshot of the studio’s history, compare the early experimentation of Fantasia with the musical storytelling of The Little Mermaid and the computer-animated world-building of Zootopia. For a focused first watch, choose by mood: Pinocchio for a dramatic fable, The Emperor’s New Groove for comedy, or Moana for a contemporary musical adventure. Streaming catalogs vary by country and change over time; check current regional availability before planning a watchlist.

Rotten Tomatoes ranks by its review-status categories, while TIME’s 2011 list reflects a different editorial selection. Disney’s official catalog verifies the studio’s titles and chronology, but neither a studio filmography nor a selected Disney+ watch guide settles what belongs in a universal top 20.
