Dominican slang words and phrases can shift meaning with the situation, tone, and relationship between speakers. This starter glossary gives practical English glosses and short examples, with special care around vaina and tíguere, whose Dominican dictionary entries include multiple senses.
How to read Dominican slang in context
These are useful expressions to recognize, not a claim that each one is exclusive to the Dominican Republic or used by every speaker. Several examples below come from a practical guide; the guide does not establish each term’s exact regional or social distribution. For dictionary-backed meanings, the Diccionario del español dominicano and ASALE’s Diccionario de americanismos are stronger references. The Dominican dictionary describes its scope as “El Diccionario del español dominicano registra y describe el léxico usual propio de la variedad dominicana de la lengua española, con independencia de su apego a las normas.”
Use the examples as clues rather than fixed formulas: a familiar greeting may sound natural among friends but overly casual in a formal exchange, and a word with several senses needs its surrounding sentence to make the intended meaning clear.
Greetings and ways to address people
¿Qué lo qué? / KLK
“What’s up?” or “What’s going on?” A familiar greeting: ¿Qué lo qué, mi hermano? KLK is an informal written abbreviation.

Pana
A friend, buddy, or pal: ¡KLK, pana! The exact level of familiarity depends on the relationship.
Manito / manita
Literally “little brother” or “little sister,” also used affectionately to address a friend: Dímelo, manito, ¿todo bien?

Chercha
Kidding around, lively conversation, or a party atmosphere: Dejen la chercha y pónganse a trabajar. It can describe playful socializing rather than a formal event.
Bochinche
Gossip, drama, or rumor: No me vengas con ese bochinche. It often carries a negative or dismissive tone.
Tíguere / tíguera
ASALE’s Diccionario de americanismos records Dominican senses for a generally young person who is brazen or daring, and for a person whose identity is unknown or unstated. The first sense may suggest nerve or audacity; it should not be reduced to “hustler.” In an example such as Ese tíguere es atrevido, the daring-person sense fits; in ¿Quién es ese tíguere?, it can mean “that guy” without specifying who he is. Tone and situation determine whether it sounds admiring, critical, or simply informal. See ASALE’s entry.

Things, money, and everyday situations
Vaina
The Dominican dictionary records several meanings: an unnamed thing or matter, a topic or business, an unpleasant situation, or a bothersome person. The intended sense comes from context: Pásame esa vaina can mean “Pass me that thing”; esa vaina del trabajo can refer to a work matter; and a complaint about una vaina may mean a troublesome situation. It can sound blunt or dismissive, so it is not a neutral substitute for every English “thing.” Consult the Diccionario del español dominicano.
De vaina
“By chance” or “unexpectedly” in the Dominican dictionary: De vaina llegué a tiempo means “I got there on time by chance.” ASALE also records this Dominican sense.

Bacano / bacana

Informal Dominican speech may reduce sounds or join words: a practical guide describes syllable-final s dropping and contractions such as para el becoming pa’l. It also describes regional consonant differences, including patterns associated with Cibao and Santo Domingo. These are listening clues, not universal rules: pronunciation varies among speakers and settings, and a written slang form may not reflect how every person says it.
Where to look up a word you hear
For Dominican-specific lexical senses, consult the Diccionario del español dominicano. For broader American Spanish usage and regional labels, check ASALE’s Diccionario de americanismos. Practical travel-oriented guides can add conversational examples, but confirm unfamiliar words in context rather than assuming a single translation applies everywhere.
