The exact 20 films selected by DocumentaryTube’s experts—and the criteria behind that selection—are not established by the available sources. Naming a definitive list without those details would risk attributing choices to the site’s experts that they did not make. What can be established is why credible “best movies of 2024” lists differ, and what readers should check when comparing them.
Why there isn’t one definitive list of the best movies of 2024
“Best” can mean an editor’s choices, a poll of critics, or a ranking based on review scores. Those methods answer different questions, so their selections and ordering should not be treated as interchangeable.

- Editorial picks reflect the named editors’ judgment. They can balance craft, originality, impact, and personal response without turning those considerations into a numerical formula.
- Critics’ polls combine votes from a group of critics. Film Comment’s 2024 poll published a top 20 of films released that year; its first entries included All We Imagine as Light, Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World, Dahomey, and No Other Land. Film Comment’s announcement says the top eight films came from outside the United States.
- Review-score rankings aggregate critics’ ratings according to a particular publisher’s rules. Metacritic’s list, published January 6, 2025, ranked eligible films by weighted Metascore. Its criteria required at least seven professional reviews and a U.S. theatrical or direct streaming/VOD release during calendar 2024; short films and reissues were excluded. Scores from different services are not a shared scale, and a critics’ poll is not equivalent to either a score ranking or a set of editors’ choices.
Check what “2024” means on each list
A year-end label does not always mean every film received its first release in that calendar year under the same rules. Metacritic specifies eligible U.S. theatrical or direct streaming/VOD releases during 2024. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, updated April 30, 2025, is organized around Certified Fresh movies of 2024 but includes some titles identified with earlier release years. The guide’s entries should therefore not be assumed to use the same release-year test as Metacritic.

For any list, look for whether it counts festival premieres, a film’s first release anywhere, or its release in a particular country. A film can arrive in different territories in different years, making the scope important when comparing selections.
Look for ranking, range, and rationale
A numbered list may indicate rank—or simply make entries easier to identify. BBC Culture’s list, compiled by Nicholas Barber and Caryn James and published December 10, 2024, contains 20 films but is explicitly unranked; its numbers distinguish entries rather than signal order. The indexed selection spans films including Civil War, La chimera, All We Imagine as Light, Anora, The Substance, and Blitz. See the BBC Culture list index.
Range is another useful measure. A list that includes films from different countries, genres, and formats may reveal more about the breadth of a year’s cinema than one confined to a single market or type of release. Film Comment editor Clinton Krute described the poll’s top eight selections as coming from outside the United States and said the list reflected global cinema’s continuing salience. That is his characterization of Film Comment’s poll, not a criterion shared by every list.
Brief explanations matter, too: they show whether a film was selected for its form, subject, performances, cultural impact, or another reason. Without a stated rationale, a title and position alone cannot tell readers what “best” means to the list-makers.

Where to watch films on a 2024 list
Streaming, rental, and purchase options change over time and vary by territory. The Associated Press’s December 4, 2024 article presents separate favorites from film writers Jake Coyle and Lindsey Bahr and gives viewing options for some titles; those listings are time- and region-sensitive. Check the AP article for its film-specific notes, then confirm the provider, format, and country’s current listing before relying on availability.
Metacritic also included viewing routes alongside its ranking, but availability cited on a dated page may no longer be current. A reliable watch option should specify whether a title is streaming, available to rent or buy, or in another format—and for which region.
