Black Christmas (1974) is the best Christmas horror movie overall, but the right choice depends on the kind of nightmare you want: creature horror, folk horror, psychological dread, zombies, or a darkly comic holiday massacre. These 20 films are ranked by filmmaking quality, horror effectiveness, strength of the Christmas setting, originality, influence, and rewatchability.
If you want Christmas cheer with a body count, a supernatural curse, or something much worse hiding beneath the wrapping paper, Black Christmas (1974) remains the best Christmas horror movie ever made. Bob Clark’s film combines an isolated sorority house, obscene phone calls, subjective killer-camera shots, and an unexplained threat with an unusually powerful sense of holiday unease.

Black Christmas (1974)
Bob Clark’s Canadian proto-slasher is still the essential Christmas horror film. During the holiday break, residents of a sorority house are terrorized by obscene phone calls and an unseen killer. The house’s decorations, carols, empty rooms, and seasonal absence of authority make the setting feel both familiar and dangerously exposed.

Thirteen Ghosts- Factory sealed DVD
Its subjective camera work and refusal to provide a neat explanation helped establish techniques later associated with Halloween and the slasher boom. It is more accurate to call Black Christmas one of the genre’s key prototypes than “the first slasher movie”: earlier films, including Mario Bava’s A Bay of Blood (1971), contain recognizable slasher elements. What makes Clark’s film rank first is its control. The Christmas setting is not a gimmick; it amplifies psychological menace.
Check its critical reception at Rotten Tomatoes, and see the BFI’s Christmas horror selection for further context.
-
Gremlins (1984)
Joe Dante’s horror-comedy begins with the perfect Christmas gift: Gizmo, a charming creature whose care instructions are disastrously ignored. Soon, the monsters have transformed the seemingly idyllic town of Kingston Falls into a miniature holiday apocalypse.
Gremlins earns its second-place ranking because it balances genuine creature horror, practical effects, black comedy, satire of consumer culture, and a richly realized Christmas setting. It is accessible enough for a group watch but remains much darker than its cuddly advertising suggested.

-
The Lodge (2019)
Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s psychological horror film strands Grace, her fiancé’s two children, and a remote cabin together during the holidays. A blizzard, religious trauma, isolation, and the children’s hostility gradually destabilize the group.
This is colder and more psychologically punishing than most seasonal horror. Christmas decorations and family rituals do not provide comfort; they make the characters’ emotional estrangement more visible. The film is generally identified as a 2019 movie because of its festival and original-release history, although it received its U.S. theatrical release in 2020.
-
Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)
Jalmari Helander’s Finnish horror fantasy reimagines Santa Claus as a buried, predatory pagan force uncovered in Lapland. A boy and his father become involved with an operation surrounding captured “elves” and a far less benevolent version of Christmas mythology.

Its snowy Finnish landscape is fundamental to the story, not decorative background. It is also more restrained and folkloric than the phrase “killer Santa movie” suggests.
-
Better Watch Out (2016)
Chris Peckover’s home-invasion thriller initially resembles a Christmas version of Home Alone: a babysitter protects a 12-year-old boy during the holidays. It then takes a much nastier turn into a story about manipulation, entitlement, and violence.
Rank #2
The suburban lights, presents, and family-friendly atmosphere are part of the film’s deception. Because its central reversal is best experienced without advance knowledge, avoid spoilers in the headline, introduction, or recommendation blurb.

Krampus (2015)
Michael Dougherty’s horror-comedy follows a dysfunctional family whose loss of Christmas spirit summons Krampus, the goat-like figure associated with punishing misbehaving children. The family is then attacked by a series of grotesque holiday creatures.
With strong production design, practical creature work, and a coherent folkloric premise, this is probably the most accessible modern Christmas monster movie. One important correction: Krampus is not simply “the evil version of Santa.” In Central European tradition, he is a distinct companion or counterpart to Saint Nicholas, associated with punishing bad children.
Check Krampus at Rotten Tomatoes or read the Guardian review.
-
Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)
John McPhail’s zombie musical follows Anna and her friends as an outbreak hits the town of Little Haven during the Christmas season. The characters fight, sing, and try to survive while holiday celebrations collapse around them.

A Christmas Horror Story (2015)
This anthology intercuts several stories set in the fictional town of Bailey Downs: sinister spirits, a murderous Santa, zombie-like creatures, and a deeply disturbing family Christmas. William Shatner plays a radio host whose broadcast connects the segments.
The structure supplies variety, while the film understands one of Christmas horror’s most reliable strengths: cheerfulness and brutality can occupy the same frame. It is a good choice when you want several different seasonal nightmares rather than one sustained tone.

The Day of the Beast (1995)
Álex de la Iglesia’s Spanish black comedy follows a priest convinced that the Antichrist will be born in Madrid on Christmas Day. He joins a heavy-metal fan and a television psychic to locate and stop the event.
Aggressively comic, satanic, politically irreverent, and visually chaotic, it is among the most original films on this list. The Christmas premise is not an afterthought: the holiday becomes the deadline for an apocalyptic religious conspiracy.

Christmas Evil (1980)
Lewis Jackson’s psychologically focused holiday slasher follows Harry Stadling, a toy-factory employee whose obsession with Santa Claus escalates into violence. After witnessing an incident that destroys his childhood Christmas idealism, Harry’s damaged fantasy begins to govern his behavior.
Unlike many killer-Santa films, Christmas Evil treats its central character as a troubled, tragic person rather than merely a camp villain. It is bleak, uncomfortable, and more interested in psychological collapse than in a simple masked-killer formula.

The Sacrifice Game (2023)
Jenn Wexler’s period horror film strands two girls at a boarding school over the Christmas holiday in 1971. Their isolation is interrupted by cult killers who arrive intending to perform a ritual.
Boarding-school horror, occult violence, period atmosphere, and Christmas isolation give the film a distinctive identity. It uses the holiday as a pressure cooker without depending entirely on Santa imagery.
-
Inside (À l’intérieur, 2007)
Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s French extreme-horror film takes place on Christmas Eve. A pregnant widow is terrorized in her home by a knife- and scissor-wielding intruder.

The Children (2008)
Tom Shankland’s British horror film brings two families together at a country estate in late December. After the children become sick, they begin behaving violently toward the adults.
The film weaponizes the assumption that Christmas is a safe family holiday. Its most unsettling idea is not simply that children become monsters, but that parents may have to defend themselves against their own children.

P2 (2007)
Franck Khalfoun’s contained thriller follows Angela, who works late on Christmas Eve and becomes trapped in a parking garage after her car fails. The garage security guard then holds her captive.
Usually classified as a horror-thriller or mystery-thriller rather than pure horror, P2 nevertheless belongs on a Christmas horror list because it turns holiday emptiness into a survival threat: deserted offices, seasonal music, and a supposedly cheerful night become profoundly isolating.

Dead End (2003)
Jean-Baptiste Andrea and Fabrice Canepa’s supernatural road movie follows a family driving to a Christmas Eve gathering. After taking a shortcut through the woods, they encounter a ghostly hitchhiker and a series of increasingly disturbing events.
The familiar holiday road trip becomes a surreal, claustrophobic nightmare. Its power comes from escalation: each strange event makes the family’s destination feel less like somewhere they can arrive than somewhere they are inevitably being drawn toward.
-
Await Further Instructions (2018)
Johnny Kevorkian’s British science-fiction horror film traps a dysfunctional family inside their home on Christmas Day. A mysterious black substance surrounds the house while the television delivers increasingly alarming instructions.
The film uses holiday family conflict to explore paranoia, xenophobia, media dependence, and authoritarian obedience. Its ending is deliberately divisive, so approach it as a tense, idea-driven film rather than a conventional creature feature with a tidy mystery solution.

The Advent Calendar (2020)
Patrick Ridremont’s French-Belgian horror film follows Eva, a paraplegic woman who receives a strange wooden Advent calendar. Each compartment contains a new object or challenge, with increasingly violent consequences as Christmas approaches.
The calendar is the film’s engine: it supplies the rules, daily structure, escalation, and moral dilemma. It is not merely seasonal decoration. The film is commonly listed as a 2020 production or release, while its U.S. streaming availability is listed as December 2, 2021.
-
Wind Chill (2007)
Gregory Jacobs’s supernatural road horror follows two university students stranded in the snow after accepting a ride home for winter break. As the temperature drops, apparitions appear along the isolated highway.
This is a sparse, mournful winter ghost story with Christmas-break framing rather than a conventional holiday movie. Christmas is part of the timing and emotional atmosphere, but the film’s real subject is isolation on a haunted road.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Directed by Henry Selick from a story and characters created by Tim Burton, this stop-motion musical follows Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, after he discovers Christmas Town and attempts to take over the holiday.
It is a dark fantasy and musical first, not a conventional horror film. Still, its macabre character designs, cemetery imagery, monsters, and collision between Halloween and Christmas make it an essential crossover recommendation.
One frequent error is crediting Burton as director. Henry Selick directed the film; Burton supplied the story and created the characters. See Rotten Tomatoes’ Christmas horror guide or the BFI’s list.

Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)
Charles E. Sellier Jr.’s controversial slasher follows Billy, whose traumatic childhood experiences involving Christmas and Santa Claus lead him to become a killer in a Santa suit.

Please review EULA and Privacy policy. Its premise makes the conflict between holiday innocence and slasher violence unusually explicit. It ranks twentieth because its historical importance to the killer-Santa cycle is greater than its overall subtlety.
Specify the year when discussing this film. The title also applies to later sequels, remakes, and a separately titled 2025 film, so “Silent Night, Deadly Night” does not identify only one production. Check the 1984 film at Rotten Tomatoes.
How Christmas horror works
The best films here do more than place a generic monster beside a Christmas tree. They use the holiday’s specific ingredients—family obligations, gift-giving, religious symbolism, children, travel, carols, crowded calendars, and the expectation of goodwill—as sources of suspense or contradiction.
- For pure seasonal dread: Start with Black Christmas.
- For creature horror and dark comedy: Choose Gremlins, Krampus, or Rare Exports.
- For serious psychological horror: Watch The Lodge, Christmas Evil, or Inside.
- For a fun genre hybrid: Try Anna and the Apocalypse or The Nightmare Before Christmas.
- For contained survival horror: Pick P2, Dead End, or Wind Chill.
- For provocative, idea-driven horror: Try Await Further Instructions or The Day of the Beast.
Common mistakes about Christmas horror movies
- Black Christmas was the first slasher. It was a hugely influential proto-slasher and a major precursor to the late-1970s boom, but the absolute claim overlooks earlier films with slasher elements.
- Tim Burton directed The Nightmare Before Christmas. Henry Selick directed it. Burton created the characters and supplied the story.
- Krampus is evil Santa. He is a distinct Central European folkloric figure associated with Saint Nicholas and the punishment of bad children.
- Every Christmas horror film is a slasher. The season also supports creature features, folk horror, ghost stories, psychological horror, zombie films, science-fiction horror, musicals, and horror-comedy.
- A film must take place on Christmas Day to count. Christmas Eve, Advent, Christmas break, late-December gatherings, and the broader holiday season all qualify when Christmas materially shapes the story.
- P2 is a traditional Christmas movie. It is a Christmas Eve captivity and survival thriller whose holiday setting creates emptiness and isolation.
- The Lodge is only a 2020 film. It is generally identified as a 2019 film, despite its 2020 U.S. theatrical release.
- Silent Night, Deadly Night refers to one film. Use the release year to distinguish the 1984 original from sequels, remakes, and other productions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Christmas horror movie?
Black Christmas (1974) is the best overall Christmas horror movie. It makes the holiday setting central to its suspense and remains one of the most influential proto-slashers.
What counts as a Christmas horror movie?
Yes. Christmas horror includes slashers, creature features, folk horror, supernatural thrillers, psychological horror, zombie films, science-fiction horror, dark fantasy, and horror-comedy. Christmas Eve, Advent, Christmas break, and holiday gatherings can all provide a legitimate seasonal setting.
Is Krampus the evil version of Santa?
No. Krampus is a distinct Central European folkloric figure associated with Saint Nicholas and the punishment of bad children. Calling him “evil Santa” is a convenient shorthand, but it is not an accurate description of the tradition.
Did Tim Burton direct The Nightmare Before Christmas?
No. Henry Selick directed The Nightmare Before Christmas. Tim Burton created the characters and supplied the story.
Which Silent Night, Deadly Night movie should I watch?
The 1984 original is generally identified as Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984). Adding the year matters because the title is also associated with sequels, remakes, and other productions.
The Bottom Line
Best overall: Black Christmas (1974). For a lighter but still genuinely vicious choice, watch Gremlins; for modern psychological punishment, choose The Lodge; and for a wildly original holiday hybrid, try Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale.
