There is no single anime look. The strongest styles range from spare, angular sketches to lavish painted worlds, and from comic deformation to near-photographic backgrounds. This ranking is an editorial judgment, not an objective poll: each place weighs line and shape, abstraction, visual density, color and texture, movement, staging, narrative purpose, and how 2D, digital, and 3D elements are integrated. The Cambridge Companion to Manga and Anime treats those qualities as variables rather than a fixed formula.
Read the list as a guide to what you can actually see: contour, palette, background treatment, motion, and the emotional work of design. A series can be influential, beautiful, or brilliantly strange without sharing the same visual grammar as anything else here.
How the ranking works
“Best” means the most distinctive, coherent, expressive, and enduring visual approaches—not the most expensive production or the biggest audience. Anime style includes timing and composition as well as character drawing: a slow background slide can alter a scene’s mood as decisively as a new line design, as the Japan Media Arts Current Contents discussion of Patlabor 2: The Movie explains (source).
Production history also resists simple labels. Japanese animation used overlapping terms such as “manga,” “line drawing,” and “chiyogami film” before vocabulary settled, and cel, painted, digital, and 3D methods have long coexisted (Japan Media Arts Archive). The order below therefore judges the finished image and its storytelling effect, not whether it was made on paper or in software.

1. Hand-painted naturalism — Studio Ghibli’s mature fantasy
Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and My Neighbor Totoro make ordinary light, weather, vegetation, and architecture feel tactile. Rounded faces and readable silhouettes keep characters inviting while layered backgrounds supply astonishing depth. Color shifts quietly with emotion: a bathhouse glows with crowded warmth, while a forest can become ominous without losing beauty. The style’s greatness is its balance of intimacy and spectacle.
Computer work supports rather than overwhelms the drawing. TIME describes Spirited Away as using computer animation sparingly while retaining a traditional 2D appearance (TIME, 2021).
2. Graphic urban futurism — Akira
Akira fuses hard-edged architecture, dense mechanical detail, saturated night color, and exceptionally precise motion. Characters remain comparatively solid and human, so explosions, motorcycles, and collapsing infrastructure feel physically consequential. Horizontal compositions and neon-versus-shadow contrasts turn the city into an active force rather than a backdrop.
3. Ink-brush mythmaking — Mononoke
Mononoke treats every frame like a moving woodblock print: flat planes, decorative borders, patterned textiles, and acid-bright color sit beside deliberately simplified figures. Sudden shifts in scale and graphic overlays make supernatural diagnosis feel like visual theater. Its controlled flatness is not a lack of depth; it is the show’s argument that folklore is constructed from signs, memory, and ritual.
4. Expressive minimalism — Ping Pong the Animation
Loose contours, warped perspective, unfinished-looking anatomy, and abrupt changes in drawing density make Ping Pong one of anime’s clearest demonstrations that polish is not the same as precision. Faces stretch under pressure; motion lines become emotional diagrams; empty space can feel louder than a crowd. The result is kinetic, vulnerable, and immediately identifiable—an example highlighted in Crunchyroll’s overview of anime’s visual diversity (Crunchyroll, 2023).
5. Baroque mechanical spectacle — Mobile Suit Gundam and its successors
Realistic proportions, panel lines, warning decals, cockpit displays, and carefully staged machines made robots feel engineered rather than magical. The best entries reserve visual exaggeration for impact: a beam, shield, or damaged joint reads because the surrounding hardware is specific. This style’s legacy lies in making military scale legible through silhouettes and repeatable mechanical detail.
6. Gothic storybook horror — Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Long vertical compositions, jewel-tone shadows, elaborate costumes, and pale, sculpted faces create a decaying-romantic atmosphere. Backgrounds resemble illuminated manuscripts or oil paintings, while action cuts through them with sudden, clean diagonals. Beauty and menace share the same surface, so elegance never neutralizes the horror.
7. Hyper-detailed cyberpunk collage — Ghost in the Shell
Reflective glass, wet streets, cables, signage, and translucent interfaces crowd the frame without making it unreadable. Cool greens and blues flatten bodies into the networked city, then close-ups restore tactile detail to skin, metal, and water. Its measured camera movement and architectural scale make philosophical questions feel spatial.
8. Pop-art magical-girl design — Sailor Moon
Long limbs, elegant poses, jewel colors, ribbons, stars, and transformation tableaux turn fashion illustration into action language. The style distinguishes personalities through hair shape and color while repeating iconic motifs for instant recognition. Its theatrical staging makes friendship and self-invention visible before a character speaks.
9. Painterly historical realism — The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
Visible brush texture, unfinished edges, and sudden bursts of ink-like speed suggest drawings being made in real time. Figures can dissolve into washes or streak across paper-white space, matching the story’s instability and impermanence. This is a rare style where apparent incompleteness is the central expressive tool.
10. Dense industrial fantasy — Made in Abyss
Soft, simplified children contrast with immense layered environments: cliffs, ruins, plants, machinery, and atmospheric haze. The cute foreground design lowers the viewer’s guard while the backgrounds insist on scale and danger. Color and texture do narrative work, mapping wonder and dread onto the same geography.
11. Angular psychological expressionism — Neon Genesis Evangelion
Sharp facial planes, stark lighting, empty interiors, and repeated compositions turn emotional isolation into architecture. Evangelions move with both robotic mass and animal violence; still frames and held poses can be as confrontational as battles. Its visual grammar shifts when private anxiety overwhelms external reality.
12. Soft watercolor romance — Makoto Shinkai’s skies and city light
High-contrast sunsets, luminous clouds, rain-slick streets, and carefully rendered infrastructure give everyday separation a cosmic scale. Characters are drawn simply enough to remain emotionally readable against spectacular backgrounds. The style’s signature is not “pretty scenery” alone but the friction between vast atmosphere and small human decisions.
13. Rubber-hose comic dynamism — One Piece
Elastic anatomy, extreme silhouettes, graphic facial reactions, and boldly varied costume shapes let comedy and action occupy the same frame. Background detail rises for spectacle and falls away for a punchline. Because bodies can stretch, squash, and snap back, the style treats imagination itself as a physical power.
14. Retro cel adventure — Future Boy Conan and classic television anime
Clear profiles, economical shading, painted skies, and strong color blocking preserve readability at speed. Reused cycles become expressive when timing, layout, and poses are carefully chosen. The charm comes from visible design decisions: a limited palette and decisive contour can make a modest image feel faster than a crowded one.
15. Surreal collage and pop symbolism — Revolutionary Girl Utena
Flat color fields, repeated staircases, silhouettes, theatrical props, and emblematic roses replace naturalistic continuity with symbolic space. Recurring compositions invite comparison rather than passive viewing. The style turns melodrama into a stage where identity and power can be rearranged from episode to episode.
16. Quiet architectural realism — Patlabor 2: The Movie
Muted skies, broad negative space, precise infrastructure, and restrained character acting make waiting feel dramatic. In its harbor conversation, slowly shifting scenery, music, and extended visual space create movement without an action set piece (Japan Media Arts Current Contents). This style proves that atmosphere can be built through duration and composition as much as through drawing.
17. Neon grotesque — Devilman Crybaby
Flickering contours, simplified bodies, violent color clashes, and fluid digital motion produce a world that seems to melt under emotional pressure. Crowd scenes become rhythmic masses; faces fracture into panic or ecstasy. The roughness is purposeful, making social collapse feel contagious and unstable.
18. Decorative historical fantasy — Inu-Oh
Costume, stage lighting, calligraphic motion, and concert-like editing transform medieval material into flamboyant performance art. Figures may become silhouettes or bursts of color when music takes over. Its deliberate excess shows how anime can use live-performance grammar without surrendering drawn transformation.
19. Toon-shaded 2D/3D synthesis — Princess Mononoke
The film blends hand-painted cels and backgrounds with digitally composited 3D effects. Computer Graphics World’s account describes toon shading used to give digital imagery thick paint and sharp contour qualities, preserving a drawn character rather than announcing “CG” as a separate style (Computer Graphics World, March 2000). Its achievement is integration: technology expands smoke, motion, and scale while the visual world remains coherent.

Ordinary school settings are rendered with clean, approachable designs, then detonated by sudden perspective shifts, speed lines, hyper-detailed reactions, and cinematic effects. The contrast between calm setup and impossible escalation is the style’s engine. It ranks twentieth only because its purpose is narrower than the more world-building approaches above, not because its timing is less inventive.

These examples do not divide neatly by decade, demographic label, or production method. A hand-drawn appearance can contain digital compositing; a digitally animated film can preserve painted texture; a quiet scene can depend on camera-like movement more than on elaborate character design. Princess Mononoke is a clear 2D/3D case, while Spirited Away demonstrates how restrained computer use can protect a traditional 2D impression (CGW; TIME).
That variety is why no authoritative top-twenty ranking exists. The useful question is not which style is universally superior, but which combination of line, density, color, movement, staging, and production integration best serves a particular story.
