The key 1923 Season 2 filming update came from BNSF Railway: 101 Studios filmed the final moments of the season’s last episode at BNSF’s Butte depot, with Spencer Dutton—played by Brandon Sklenar—returning to Montana by train. That depot shoot was one scene, not the end of the entire production. Season 2 has since aired, so this is a historical production update.
What was filmed at the Butte depot?
BNSF Railway reported that 101 Studios filmed the finale sequence at its Butte, Montana depot. In the scene, Spencer Dutton arrives by train as he makes his way back to Montana to help save his family’s ranch. BNSF’s account describes the production as shooting “the final moments of the final episode for season two.” BNSF’s on-location account is the source for the depot and scene details.
The account also describes coordination between BNSF, Paramount+ and 101 Studios so filming could proceed without interrupting train operations or compromising safety. BNSF director of Corporate Real Estate Cary Hutchings summarized the coordination as “the give and take.”
Was that the full Season 2 filming wrap?
No. The Butte report concerned the finale sequence, while the full production chronology continued beyond that location shoot. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that production began in summer 2024 and wrapped in fall 2024, with filming in Montana and Texas. A separate report published April 8, 2025 said the season officially wrapped on Sunday, April 6, 2025. These reports describe different milestones, so the depot filming should not be treated as proof that all Season 2 filming ended there.

Where else was Season 2 filmed?
Alongside Montana, production filmed in Texas. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram named Austin, Lockhart, Bartlett and San Antonio among the Texas locations. Its February 21, 2025 report also said Season 2 was scheduled to premiere on Paramount+ on February 23, 2025. The Star-Telegram’s Season 2 report includes the location and release context.

The Butte depot report captured a production-stage moment during work on the finale; it was not an announcement of a new season or a sign that filming was still underway. Season 2 was already scheduled to premiere on February 23, 2025, and the later cast-interview report places the full-season wrap on April 6, 2025. As of October 4, 2026, the season has aired.
