Hope arrives at the ranch—and becomes a threat
The episode opens on a rare image of domestic steadiness: the Dutton table is full, the coop has been repaired, and McDowell brings word that Spencer is returning. Jacob recognizes the urgency beneath the relief and sets out to meet him before Donald Whitfield’s men can get there first. That decision gives the news an immediate cost: Spencer’s homecoming is not simply a reunion to anticipate, but a race against the violence already bearing down on the family.
Jack’s choice to leave the ranch alone makes that danger brutally concrete. Whitfield’s men kill him, converting the episode’s warmest setting into a place the family cannot keep safe. The contrast is effective because the domestic details are specific and modest; the loss feels like an assault on the possibility of ordinary life, not just another beat in a succession of action scenes.

Teonna’s escape brings agency, but no safety
Teonna and Runs His Horse find Pete and Marshal Kent dead, then face Father Renaud as he catches up with them. Renaud shoots Runs His Horse; when his gun fails to fire again, Teonna kills him. Of the episode’s three strands, hers gives its protagonist the clearest decisive action. She survives the immediate confrontation through her own response, but the victory is inseparable from losing Runs His Horse.
That distinction matters to the episode’s bleak design. Teonna is not merely swept along by events, yet agency does not become a promise of escape or relief. Her plot makes survival feel hard-won and painfully incomplete, rather than treating a moment of triumph as a clean reset.

Alex’s journey is suspense built from narrowing options
Spencer changes his route west while Alex’s journey toward Montana briefly improves: Paul and Hillary offer her a ride. The car runs out of fuel in the snow. Alex wakes to find Hillary dead inside and Paul dead nearby, with no one left to help her. The episode ends her strand with isolation rather than rescue.
Unlike Teonna, Alex has little meaningful control over the danger closing around her. The interrupted drive turns the weather and distance into active pressures, while the deaths of her companions remove the small margin of safety the offer of a ride seemed to provide. The suspense works through that narrowing of choices; the final image is less a twist than the terrible result of a journey that has run out of options.

Does the episode earn its relentless death toll?
The three stories share a repeated structure: a fragile opening toward safety or connection is followed by an interruption that makes survival less certain. Spencer’s return raises hope at the ranch even as it draws attention to the danger there; Teonna’s ability to fight back does not spare her a devastating loss; Alex’s helpers cannot overcome the snow. That pattern gives the hour a coherent fatalism. But coherence is not the same as emotional variety. Jack’s murder, Runs His Horse’s death, and Alex’s discovery of her companions all intensify the same governing idea: hope can be erased without warning. The repetition makes the penultimate chapter feel severe and consequential, yet it can also blunt the impact of individual losses. The strongest material is where character and consequence remain visible—Teonna’s response to Renaud, Jacob’s attempt to reach Spencer, and Alex’s sudden isolation. Where death functions chiefly as a fresh shock or a push toward the finale, the despair risks feeling more relentless than revealing.

Episode 6 does not deliver Spencer’s return to the ranch; it makes that return the urgent question ahead. Jacob is trying to reach him, while the family has lost Jack to Whitfield’s men.
