Spoilers for all of 1923 season one. The season ends with three crises still unresolved: Donald Whitfield has put the Dutton ranch under a repayment deadline, Spencer and Alexandra are separated after a fatal confrontation at sea, and Teonna is on the run from the boarding school authorities. Season two has already premiered and concluded; this recap is a catch-up, not a preview of an upcoming return.
How the Duttons came to be in Montana
Jacob Dutton is James Dutton’s brother. After James dies, Margaret asks Jacob to come to Montana, where he and his wife Cara raise James and Margaret’s sons, John and Spencer. That family history, outlined by Paramount+, is the key link to the earlier series 1883; it is useful background, but not required to follow season one.
In 1923, Jacob and Cara are older and hope for a quieter life. Instead, the season puts their home, their family, and the people trying to reach Montana under pressure.
Jacob and Cara: Whitfield puts the ranch on a clock
Businessman Donald Whitfield pays the Duttons’ property taxes, then gives Jacob a year to repay him. Whitfield wants the land for a tourist destination, and he uses Banner Creighton to put pressure on the family. This is more than a general land dispute: the tax payment gives Whitfield a specific route to claim the ranch if Jacob cannot meet the deadline, as recapped by TheWrap.

Spencer and Alexandra: a marriage interrupted at sea
Jacob and Cara’s nephew Spencer has been traveling while carrying trauma from World War I. He meets Alexandra, falls in love with her, and marries her. Their life together is interrupted aboard the HMS Majestic, when Alexandra’s former partner, Arthur, challenges Spencer to a sword duel.
Spencer wins, but Arthur tries to draw a gun afterward. Spencer throws him overboard, and Arthur’s wealthy family wants Spencer arrested. Alexandra tries to show that Spencer acted in self-defense, but he must leave the ship. The newly married couple part in tears; Alexandra promises to meet him in Bozeman. The season ends with their reunion uncertain, not with the marriage definitively over.

Teonna: an escape becomes a pursuit
Teonna escapes the boarding school after learning that Native American children were buried there. She heads toward Wyoming with her father, Runs With Horse, and Pete, while the law is already pursuing them. This is a separate pursuit from the Duttons’ Montana land conflict, but it is another strand whose outcome remains open when season one ends.

1923 is a Paramount+ Western drama starring Harrison Ford as Jacob, Helen Mirren as Cara, Brandon Sklenar as Spencer, Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra, and Aminah Nieves as Teonna. Paramount Global Content lists two seasons and 16 episodes in total. Paramount+’s series page says both seasons are available to stream there; availability can vary by territory.
