That tension is the appeal: you can understand why a character draws you in without approving of what they do. These picks range from rebellious outsiders and troubled vigilantes to criminals and outright villains.
There is no definitive anti-hero canon here. The selection follows Bryan M. Wolfe’s recommendations in Stuff’s 20 February 2024 feature, with a historical noir choice supported by the BFI. The films are grouped by the kind of moral tension they create, not ranked.
What makes a film character an anti-hero?
An anti-hero lacks some qualities usually associated with a conventional hero, such as altruism, nobility or a reliable moral code. Stuff writer Bryan M. Wolfe puts the appeal this way: “The anti-hero may lack traditional heroic qualities such as morality, altruism, or nobility, but often that just makes them more human and relatable.” That is a useful working definition, not a strict category. Some characters resist an oppressive system; others are violent outsiders, criminals or deeply compromised investigators. Sympathy is not the same as moral approval.
The films below differ in genre and in how far their leads cross ethical lines. Start with the kind of character you want to watch:

Three further choices take a wider view of antiheroism: A Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver and the Godfather films. Each puts a viewer’s allegiance under pressure in a different way.
Anti-heroes drawn to resistance, survival or loyalty
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)
Randle Patrick McMurphy is an outsider who pushes back against an oppressive institution. The appeal comes from resistance and defiance, rather than a claim that every rule-breaker is right. It is a strong choice if you want an anti-hero whose challenge to authority gives the story its moral tension.
The Warriors (1979)
After a street gang is accused of murder, its members must cross a violent city to get home. The film’s source of sympathy is less one character’s virtue than the group’s camaraderie and loyalty under threat. That collective perspective can make viewers root for people they might otherwise dismiss.
First Blood (1982)
John Rambo’s trauma and isolation provide context for his actions. Context helps explain the character; it does not make violence harmless or automatically justified. This is a more grounded choice if you want a story that asks viewers to weigh a troubled person’s circumstances against the consequences of what he does.

Vigilantes and investigators on uncertain moral ground
The Maltese Falcon (1941)
Samuel Spade is a private detective whose cynicism and self-interest make him a noir anti-hero rather than a straightforward champion of justice. The BFI describes John Huston’s film as a 1941 US release adapted from Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 detective novel, and says Humphrey Bogart’s Spade established “the screen archetype of the wise-talking private detective.” The BFI lists the film’s running time as 100 minutes. Its combination of detective work and moral ambiguity makes it a historical starting point for this kind of screen character.
Taxi Driver (1976)
Travis Bickle is an isolated, disturbed veteran who turns to vigilante violence. The story’s downward trajectory matters: a character’s self-appointed mission to deliver justice is not evidence that his conduct is ethical. Choose this if you want the “rooting for the bad guy” premise to feel unsettling rather than reassuring.
Blade Runner (1982)
Rick Deckard’s role as a replicant hunter complicates the usual divide between hero and villain. Questions of identity and humanity make this a science-fiction pick where the viewer must think about who counts as human, and what that means for the character’s work.
Drive (2011)
The unnamed getaway driver can be restrained and kind, yet capable of shocking violence. That sharp contrast is central to the appeal: a character may inspire protectiveness at one moment and alarm the next. It suits viewers drawn to crime films where warmth and brutality coexist rather than resolve into a clean moral verdict.

Criminal ambition, revenge and moral deterioration
Scarface (1983)
Tony Montana’s rise as a drug lord places ambition and ruthlessness at the center of his anti-hero appeal. The draw is the momentum of a criminal ascent, not a hidden claim that the character’s success makes his actions admirable.
Unforgiven (1992)
Will Munny is neither wholly good nor wholly evil. His history as an outlaw hangs over a revenge-driven story in which violence can be framed as justice. The film’s appeal lies in that uneasy overlap: past wrongdoing does not disappear simply because a later act may seem deserved.
There Will Be Blood (2007)
Daniel Plainview’s rise from prospector to oil magnate is a character study in ambition and moral ambiguity. Rather than offering a comforting redemption arc, the film keeps attention on the cost of a relentless pursuit of power.
The Godfather films
Michael Corleone’s progression from reluctance to cruel, calculating power creates an extended portrait of moral deterioration. Watching the arc across the films makes the question less “Is he a good man?” than how far a character can move from his earlier self while remaining compelling.

When charisma and anger are part of the danger
Falling Down (1993)
William “D-Fens” Foster’s alienation and frustration accompany escalating violence. The story ties his anger to perceived injustice, but that framing should not be mistaken for an endorsement of his actions. It is a useful pick when you want to examine how a grievance can make a character legible to viewers without making his response acceptable.
Fight Club (1999)
Tyler Durden and the unnamed narrator sit at the intersection of consumerism, masculinity and rebellion. The film’s anti-hero tension comes from the pull of charismatic, anti-establishment ideas and the destructive direction they take. If you are interested in characters whose appeal is inseparable from the danger of their worldview, this is a particularly direct fit.
Nightcrawler (2014)
Louis Bloom works as a freelance crime journalist and grows increasingly sinister. His professional success can hold a viewer’s attention even as his conduct becomes harder to defend. This is one of the clearest choices for a lead whose ambition—not a sympathetic past or a just cause—keeps the story moving.
Characters whose villainy is the point
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Alex DeLarge is violent and sociopathic. The discomfort sharpens when he becomes a victim of psychological manipulation: a viewer may feel sympathy for what is done to him while remaining clear-eyed about what he has done to others. That gap between compassion and moral approval is the film’s most provocative anti-hero angle.

American Psycho (2000)
Patrick Bateman is a wealthy investment banker and serial killer in a dark satire of materialism and vanity. He is not simply a decent person with rough edges; his inclusion marks the far end of the spectrum, where the protagonist is openly villainous and any fascination with him should not be confused with admiration.
American History X (1998)
Derek Vinyard’s violent racism is part of the character, not a trait to romanticize. The story’s focus on his later recognition of the destructiveness of his beliefs makes this a different kind of arc: the interest lies in change and consequence, not in treating hateful ideology as a source of glamour.
How to choose your next anti-hero film
- For resistance to authority: start with One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
- For noir and a hard-boiled detective: choose The Maltese Falcon.
- For vigilante stories that challenge your allegiance: try Taxi Driver or Unforgiven.
- For criminal ambition: look to Scarface, The Godfather films or There Will Be Blood.
- For a lead who becomes harder to defend as the story goes on: pick Nightcrawler or American Psycho.
- For a character whose troubling conduct is set against a personal or ideological turning point: consider A Clockwork Orange, First Blood or American History X.
The title’s promise is not that every film makes its lead worthy of support. It is that these stories can make us emotionally invested in people whose actions remain troubling—and invite us to notice where understanding ends and endorsement would begin.
