Autumn Crittendon, also known as Autumn Oxley, died at 27 on July 20, 2024, in Sandston, Virginia. Henrico County Police initially treated the case as a death investigation while awaiting the medical examiner’s findings. News outlets reported in October 2024 that Virginia’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined her death resulted from fentanyl and para-fluorofentanyl toxicity and classified the manner as accidental.

What happened on July 20, 2024?

Henrico Police and Henrico Fire responded to a medical-emergency call at a residence in the 700 block of Chinkapin Court in Sandston. Responders found an adult woman unresponsive. Fire personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified the woman as Autumn Crittendon, who was 27. Crittendon was also known as Autumn Oxley and appeared on season five of MTV’s 16 and Pregnant in 2014.

Why was Autumn Crittendon’s death under investigation?

The initial police statement did not give a cause or manner of death. Henrico Police said, “Henrico Police are currently classifying this incident as a death investigation. Detectives are working with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on this case to determine the exact cause and manner of death.”

A “death investigation” is the classification used while detectives and the medical examiner establish what happened; it does not by itself indicate that police suspected a crime. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is responsible for determining cause and manner in cases under its jurisdiction.

Autumn Crittendon’s reported cause of death

In reports published October 21–22, 2024, Us Weekly and E! News attributed a later determination to Virginia health officials. Those reports said the cause was toxicity from fentanyl and para-fluorofentanyl and that the manner of death was accidental.

The available accounts are media reports of the medical examiner’s conclusion rather than a publicly reviewed, case-specific medical-examiner record. Virginia’s medical-examiner guidance notes that case details are confidential and that cause and manner may be released after an investigation is complete. Accordingly, the October finding should be stated as reported by those outlets and attributed to Virginia’s medical examiner, not presented as a document independently examined here.
