These 15 lesbian and sapphic kisses stand out for different reasons: some mark a relationship’s first step, some arrive after a long emotional arc, and others reveal how a kiss can be a dramatic or comic beat as well as a moment of representation. The selections span movies, live-action television and animation, so “Hollywood” here means popular screen stories broadly—not films alone. They are favorites, not an objective ranking.
The scene descriptions below follow Out.com’s curated list, “15 unforgettable lesbian & sapphic kisses from TV and movies.” The selections are easiest to compare by what each kiss does in its story, rather than by treating them as interchangeable milestones.

First kisses and relationship turning points
For some characters, a kiss makes a developing attraction explicit. For others, it changes a relationship that has been shaped by history, secrecy or conflict.
Greta and Carson — A League of Their Own
In a private room, Greta initiates a kiss and Carson kisses her back. The moment gives physical form to the attraction between them within a story where their connection must exist under social constraints.

Bette and Tina — The L Word
The list singles out an early moment in their relationship: Tina returns to Bette’s art gallery to retrieve an earring, and the encounter leads into their romantic story. It is a beginning rather than a standalone interruption in the series.
Waverly and Nicole — Wynonna Earp
In season 1, episode 9, Waverly visits Nicole at work, admits her feelings and initiates their first kiss. The scene makes Waverly’s confession part of the action, not merely subtext.
Yorkie and Kelly — Black Mirror, “San Junipero”
After meeting at a bar, Yorkie asks Kelly to help her navigate an intimate first experience. Their first kiss is one stage in a relationship that the episode develops beyond that encounter.
Emily and Sue — Dickinson
In the first episode, Emily asks Sue to promise that she will keep loving her; the kiss that follows gives the request an intimate, romantic charge.
Ronit and Esti — Disobedience
Former childhood friends from a traditional Jewish community reconnect as adults. The film’s intense kisses carry the weight of a relationship renewed under difficult circumstances.
Rank #2
Marianne and Héloïse — Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Marianne follows Héloïse into a coastal cave, where they kiss away from other people. The setting makes the moment feel private and suspended from the expectations surrounding them.
Kisses shaped by conflict, secrecy and risk
In these stories, a kiss is inseparable from a choice: to trust someone, to cross a boundary, or to let an attraction surface in an unsafe or complicated situation.
Clarke and Lexa — The 100
In season two, former rivals exchange words about trust and survival before kissing. The scene places intimacy inside a fraught political and personal relationship.

In the Wachowskis’ erotic thriller, Violet follows Corky to her car and they kiss. It is an early expression of the attraction and alliance that drive the film’s story.
Megan and Graham — But I’m a Cheerleader
The two meet at a conversion camp. After sneaking out to a gay bar, the tension between them becomes a kiss—a romantic beat set against the film’s satirical treatment of conversion efforts.

Dani and Gigi — The L Word: Generation Q
The list highlights their season 2, episode 7 kiss, which comes after an argument and in the rain. Its placement makes conflict part of the scene’s emotional context.
Friendship, comedy and animation
Not every memorable kiss is a conventional romance scene. These picks use surprise, humor or a series-spanning emotional payoff to shape the moment.

Jennifer and Needy — Jennifer’s Body
Jennifer visits Needy in bed, and the scene becomes a kiss between the longtime friends. Its charge comes in part from the uneasy closeness and history between them.
Josie and Isabel — Bottoms
In Josie’s bedroom, Isabel initiates a kiss while the two are sitting together. The scene fits a film that approaches teen desire through comedy rather than solemn romance.
Brittany and Santana — Glee
The list points to the on-the-lips kiss in season 3, episode 13, after the characters’ relationship has been developing. Its significance comes from the story built around them, not just the kiss in isolation.

Adora and Catra — She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
Their kiss arrives as the culmination of the series’ emotional arc and changes the stakes of the story. As an animated moment, it also shows why a list of screen kisses cannot be limited to live-action film and television.
What screen history can—and cannot—tell us about a kiss
A kiss can matter to viewers even when a show treats it as a brief event or a publicity hook. Visibility and sustained representation are different measures: one scene may be a memorable first, while an ongoing storyline gives a relationship room to develop.
In a 2023 Guardian interview, actor Alison Steadman recalled her kiss with Myra Frances in the 1974 BBC drama Girl: “I only realised it was the first lesbian kiss after it aired.” Steadman also challenged later accounts that called the kiss in Brookside the first. This is her account of how the scene was understood, not a universally settled ruling on television history.
The Los Angeles Times’ 2003 account described Ellen’s 1997 scene as the first on-screen romantic kiss between women on a sitcom and noted Roseanne’s earlier kiss with Mariel Hemingway. It quoted AfterEllen founder Sarah Warn on the mixed motives behind some televised kisses: a moment could be used as a marketing ploy and still contribute to visibility.
A later Autostraddle retrospective cautions against treating every episode as an equivalent advance. Its author describes some earlier kisses as short-lived ratings plays with little follow-through, and notes that the often-cited L.A. Law kiss was preceded by a scene on 21 Jump Street. Those distinctions help explain why a curated list of favorite scenes is not the same thing as a definitive history.

How to choose a scene to revisit
Consider what you want the kiss to do in the story: begin a romance, resolve a long-running emotional arc, or stand out as a brief but vivid encounter. Then consider whether it belongs to an ongoing relationship or is largely a self-contained moment. Those lenses make for a more useful comparison than an unsupported ranking of which kiss is “best.”
