His story also includes a widely repeated misconception about his eye, a major debut-album run, a guilty plea in a federal drug case, and a return to music in 2026. Here are 15 documented facts, with personal recollections distinguished from reported events.
Early life and the making of Fetty Wap
1. “Fetty Wap” combines two names
TIME reported in 2015 that “Fetty” is slang for money and that “Wap” came from Gucci Mane’s nickname, Guwop. That is the explanation TIME gave for the stage name.
2. His name is Willie Maxwell II
TIME identified the artist as Willie Maxwell II and reported that he was born in 1991. In a later FADER interview, he said, “I was born with congenital glaucoma. I’m a Gemini, June 7.”
3. Paterson, New Jersey, shaped his early story
Contemporary profiles placed his upbringing and early career in Paterson. The city is an important part of the story of how “Trap Queen” first gained traction before becoming a national hit.

The Los Angeles Times wrote that he became self-conscious about his prosthesis and stopped wearing it. The documented explanation is a medical condition, not the shooting rumor sometimes repeated about his eye.
5. He explored music before focusing on rap
TIME reported that he played piano and drums when he was young. It also named Gucci Mane and Juicy J among his musical influences, linking his early musical curiosity to artists associated with Southern rap.

9. Its love-story framing sits alongside trap references

This progression—from audience attention to radio play and label interest—helps explain how the track reached listeners beyond Paterson.
11. “Trap Queen” peaked at No. 2, not No. 1
TIME reported in October 2015 that “Trap Queen” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its peak was one of the clearest signs of Fetty Wap’s national breakout, but it did not reach the chart’s top spot.

Chart success, crews, and the next chapter
12. His self-titled debut album debuted at No. 1
300 Entertainment said the self-titled album was released on September 25, 2015, and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The chart result and release date are claims made by the label.
13. The label credited him with a Hot Rap Songs chart first
In a 2025 announcement, 300 Entertainment said Fetty Wap became the first act in the 26-year history of Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart to place his first four singles in the Top 10 simultaneously. That record claim is the label’s; it describes a chart run beyond the success of “Trap Queen” alone.
14. A 2016 profile described several music and riding crews
The Guardian’s 2016 profile described Fetty Wap’s associations with Remy Boyz, Zoo Gang, and GHB Zoo. It connected GHB Zoo with ATVs and dirt bikes. These are the profile’s account of those affiliations at that time, not a statement about his present-day status.
15. His 2026 return included a new album and a family collaboration
In March 2026, the Associated Press reported the arrival of his son Zavier and that his sisters sang on “White Roses.” Speaking about being back in the studio, Fetty Wap said, “This time, he could be in the studio. He could be hands on.” He added, “That’s my safe haven.”
The legal timeline behind the public story
The Associated Press reported that Fetty Wap pleaded guilty in August 2022 to a conspiracy drug charge and was sentenced in May 2023 to six years in prison. In January 2026, AP reported that he had been transferred from prison to home confinement after serving just over half of that sentence. That is the latest custody status established here; it should not be read as confirmation of any later change. The guilty plea and sentence are his legal outcomes; allegations about other people or the wider conspiracy should not be treated as additional convictions against him.
