There is no definitive ranking of screen science’s most memorable figures. This hand-picked, unranked list brings together 15 movie and television characters whose research, inventions, investigations, or adventures make science part of the story. “Scientist” is used broadly here: the selection includes professors, investigators, inventors, and an archaeologist, as well as laboratory researchers. Some characters originated in books or comics, but their screen portrayals and cross-media franchise versions are in scope.

The list follows the selection published by Interesting Engineering on August 3, 2018. It is an editorial selection, not a scored contest or a claim of consensus. The scientific breakthroughs below belong to fiction; listing them does not imply they are possible in real life.

15 memorable movie and TV scientists

The characters are grouped by name, not ranked. Their specialties and narrative roles vary, so a brilliant inventor, a skeptical investigator, and a professor-adventurer do not represent the same kind of scientific work.

  1. Dr. Emmett Brown — Back to the Future

Doc Brown is a theoretical physicist and inventor whose experiments produce the Flux Capacitor and a time-traveling DeLorean. His later modified steam train extends the same impossible premise. Time travel is a fictional device here, not a demonstrated scientific achievement.

    #1 Best Overall
  2. Dr. Henry Jekyll — Jekyll and Hyde

Jekyll is portrayed as a chemist or pharmaceutical researcher whose serum gives another side of his identity control. Screen adaptations differ in their details, but the enduring idea is a researcher trying to separate parts of human nature through an experiment. The transformation is fictional.

  3. Dr. Strangelove — Dr. Strangelove

A nuclear physicist associated with weapons, Strangelove is a figure of dark satire rather than a straightforward portrait of a real scientist. The film uses his expertise and manner to expose the absurdity and danger of nuclear brinkmanship.

  4. Lex Luthor — Superman stories

Across screen versions, Luthor shifts among engineer, magnate, and inventor. His intelligence and technical resources make him a formidable adversary, but there is no single stable specialty or characterization shared by every adaptation.

  5. C. A. Rotwang — Metropolis

Rotwang is a robotics engineer whose humanoid machine becomes central to the conflict in Fritz Lang’s silent science-fiction film. The robot is a dramatic invention, not a claim about what robotics can accomplish.

  6. Dr. Seth Brundle — The Fly

Brundle works on teleportation and tests his system on himself. The experiment merges his DNA with that of a fly, turning a technical breakthrough into body horror. Teleportation and the resulting transformation are fictional.

  7. Walter White — Breaking Bad

White begins as a chemistry teacher and research chemist before entering criminal methamphetamine production. The series draws on his knowledge to shape a crime drama; it should not be mistaken for an instructional account of chemistry or drug manufacture.

  8. Robert Neville — I Am Legend

Neville is a virologist trying to find a cure amid a fictional plague apocalypse. His role combines laboratory problem-solving with survival, placing scientific work inside a story about isolation and catastrophe.

  9. Dr. Henry Wu — Jurassic Park series

Wu is a geneticist and biotechnologist tied to the franchise’s dinosaur recreation program. The premise of bringing dinosaurs back through genetic engineering is fictional; his story uses that premise to explore the consequences of ambitious biotechnology.

  10. Hubert J. Farnsworth — Futurama

Professor Farnsworth is the comic, erratic inventor of the group. His often-dangerous devices make him a science-fiction version of the absent-minded professor, with invention serving as a source of both plot and jokes.

  11. Indiana Jones — Indiana Jones series

Jones is an archaeology professor as well as a field adventurer. The films borrow the excitement of pulp treasure hunts, which is not a reliable model for archaeological research. His inclusion reflects the broad use of “scientist” in this list, rather than treating archaeology as a laboratory discipline.

  12. Dr. Mason Wren — Alien Resurrection

Wren is a xenobiologist and geneticist involved in cloning xenomorphs and Ripley. The story’s cloning and alien biology are science-fiction premises, and his work is framed through the franchise’s horror and ethical conflict.

  13. Dr. Victor Frankenstein — Frankenstein adaptations

Victor is the scientist who creates life; Frankenstein is not the name of the creature. Screen adaptations vary from Mary Shelley’s novel, so a particular version’s methods and motivations should not be treated as universal to the character.

  14. Agent Dana Scully — The X-Files

Scully is a physician and FBI agent whose scientific training informs her investigations. Her skeptical approach provides a counterpoint to paranormal claims, making the tension between evidence and belief a defining part of the series.

  15. Wayne Szalinski — Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

Szalinski is an inventor whose device can shrink or enlarge objects—and, in the first film, children. The impossible scale change drives a family adventure rather than depicting an established scientific technology.

What these characters say about science on screen

Fiction often uses scientists to make an idea visible: a breakthrough can become a threat, a joke, a mystery, or a route to solving a crisis. A 2022 review of genetics in film and television describes recurring patterns that help explain the range represented here. These are interpretive categories, not fixed labels for every character.

  • The alchemist or mad scientist: scientific ambition becomes dangerous, a familiar pattern in horror and stories about experiments gone wrong.
  • The absent-minded professor: comic invention and distraction take center stage, as they often do with Farnsworth.
  • The inhuman rationalist: reason and technical expertise are presented as detached from ordinary feeling.
  • The heroic adventurer: scientific or scholarly knowledge accompanies action and fieldwork, a pattern visible in Jones’s screen persona.
  • The helpless scientist: expertise is not enough to overcome a threat or control the consequences of a discovery.
  • The social idealist: a researcher seeks to use knowledge to solve a major problem.

The review notes that genre shapes these portrayals: horror can make science a source of danger, comedy can turn invention into chaos, and drama can cast a scientist as a problem-solver. It also describes a move toward more empathetic portrayals in the twenty-first century. These patterns help explain the storytelling, but they are not evidence that a fictional experiment would work.

Is there a definitive audience favorite?

No poll establishes a universal winner among these 15. A separate 2004 BBC and British Association survey, reported by The Guardian on September 6, 2004, recorded votes for a different set of popular screen figures. It is a dated UK audience snapshot, not a ranking of this article’s selection or a current measure of opinion.

  • 43,000 people voted in the 2004 survey, according to The Guardian.
  • Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker received one third of the vote.
  • Mr. Spock received 15%, and the Doctor from Doctor Who received 13%.

Reporting the result, The Guardian quoted Sir Roland Jackson, then chief executive of the British Association, quoting Kermit: “Kermit has been quoted as saying that they spread the message that ‘science is not just for short round-headed bald guys and their orange-haired, goggle-eyed sidekicks, it’s for people like you and frogs like me’. I think that’s a very perceptive comment.”
