The Academy’s records make it possible to verify Oscar wins film by film, but they do not publish an official franchise leaderboard. A trustworthy list therefore needs a defined franchise boundary and a consistent count of competitive wins. The available Academy records here confirm major examples—not a complete, verified set of 15 franchise totals—so presenting 15 ranked entries as fact would overstate what is established.
What the Academy’s records can—and cannot—show
The Academy Awards Database is the authoritative record of Oscar winners and nominees, with coverage through the 98th Academy Awards, presented March 15, 2026. Its records attach awards to individual films and categories, rather than to a franchise-wide total. The Academy’s help documentation also explains that its “Film Series” field is associated with series of short subjects or documentaries; it is not a general franchise-ranking system.

That distinction matters because any franchise tally has to make editorial choices: which films belong to the series, whether connected spin-offs count, and whether special or honorary awards are included. The Academy’s feature-film award-year definitions have also varied over time. A list that does not state its boundaries can make unlike totals look comparable.
What can be verified from the official records
The Lord of the Rings
The Academy database returns The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King in its results for the trilogy’s films. The official statistical listing identifies The Return of the King as winning 11 competitive Oscars from 11 nominations. The Academy nominee record for Fran Walsh shows that film winning Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and Original Song, among its awards.

The 11-win figure belongs to The Return of the King alone; it is not a franchise total. A trilogy-wide figure requires checking the winning categories for all three films and adding them under the same rules.
Star Wars
The Academy’s official statistical listing distinguishes six awards for Star Wars (1977) from one Special Achievement award. Those categories should not be silently combined in a competitive-Oscar franchise total. This film’s record alone does not establish a verified total for the broader franchise.

Why a definitive 15-entry list needs film-by-film verification
Third-party compilations can suggest franchises to investigate, but they are not Academy-certified franchise rankings. The Academy evidence available for this article does not verify a consistent set of 15 franchises with exact totals. Listing 15 names and numbers anyway would risk mixing different franchise definitions, omitting films, or counting special awards as competitive wins.
To establish each entry reliably, a tally would need to name the included films and release years, record each film’s Academy-winning categories, total competitive wins, and keep special or honorary awards separate. Nominations should be reported separately from wins. The Academy database’s film-level results provide the basis for that check; a franchise total is an editorial calculation, not a number supplied by the Academy.

How to check a franchise’s Oscar record
- Use the Academy Awards Database to search each film by title and confirm its wins and nominations.
- Set the franchise boundary first: specify whether the count covers only the core series or also spin-offs and connected films.
- Add winning categories across the included films. Keep nominations in a separate total.
- Separate competitive wins from special or honorary awards, following the distinctions in the Academy’s official statistics.
- Use the Academy’s database help and FAQ to understand search fields and award-year definitions before comparing older and newer films.
